This was the last thing she'd expected from her visit to the Court. In fact, this was the last thing she'd ever expected ever. Who could honestly be interested in a little nobody like herself? She was just a sappy little poet, after all.
By the time Pale pulled away, Poe's head was reeling and her heart was slowing from an explosion to the strong rhythm of a drum - still hammering away, but steadily now as her head slowly returned to its proper coherency. Unfortunately coherency returned with questions and doubts and embarrassment. Why would he kiss her like that, so suddenly... so intensely... Did he expect something of her? They'd only just met though, surely he wouldn't expect something like... that from her?
But there had been an unspoken tension, had their not? Poe had noticed it in countless little ways in their short time together. The way he touched her cheek or the hesitance as he shifted from time to time, the softness in his smile. Poe could find no anger toward him, only uncertainty and confusion. She found him charming, yes, but in the pit of her heart she feared that he was just a noble stud and she was nothing more than a notch he aimed to put on his belt.
"I..." The finch smiled nervously, dipping her beak so that she would not have to be fixed in that intense gaze. "May I ask... why?" She didn't want to ask him to apologize, just a little clarification for certainly he wasn't unattached. Better to think that the kiss was just a kiss than to be mislead into thinking (as her naive mind begged to hear) that she was special, or worse yet, just a conquest. "I'm sure there are many prettier, more deserving, women for your attentions?"
Still... there was that flutter of hope.

There was a hum in the man's mind that he just couldn't shake, a crazy mix of thoughts. All of them raced with equal importance, so that none of them stood out or made any sense in particular. Part of him reminded him - urgently! - that she was no one, that she was just another girl that had a pretty smile and gave him a moment of her attention. She was fun for today, a friend of Xiven's, nothing more. But the rest of him reminded him that he couldn't know that. He couldn't know that until he'd spent more time with her, and really, wouldn't he like that? It could be a learning experience - a nice girl, one he might need to spend more than a day with to get what part of him said he wanted.
But was that all he wanted?
Apocalypse wasn't sure just yet. He would think on it, later. Right now, he needed to give his attention to the woman who was still in his arms and giving him the most bewildered expression he'd ever seen. Especially on the face of a woman he'd just kissed. Had he.. done something wrong? Eyes wide, he blinked at her, lightly easing his hold on her and giving her a little bit more freedom to move. "Um. I..." Words floated just on the edge of his mind, none of them feeling quite right for the situation. Did he try to charm her further, or did he just tell her what he was thinking?
No, no, that was too dangerous for now. He smiled crookedly, leaning in to lightly kiss her forehead, and then slowly released her from his grip fully. His hand went to his forehead, the smile not fading as he rubbed at his skin and closed his eyes. "I wanted to. There was a beautiful, deserving woman in front of me, and I wanted to kiss her, so.." He opened his eyes again slowly, staring down into the water. He wasn't even sure of his intent anymore - conquest? Simple want? All he could remember was that she'd been looking at him, and he'd wanted to do something, and it had seemed like the best option. "I did."

Relief filled Poe on levels she didn't fully understand long before Pale fully opened his mouth. He looked as confused as she did and, if nothing else, that made her feel less awkward. His words did the rest to put the finch back at ease and she let out a little sigh as the tension faded away.
Her blush hadn't faded yet, but thankfully Pale would not know that. "Thank you, Apocalypse. You say such sweet things... and, kiss quite well, if I may say so." Such a spontaneous thought he had entertained. Surely she wasn't his first beautiful women that he'd kissed, but that was alright. He didn't lie outright or try to sweep her away with pick up lines she didn't want to hear. He'd just done it. Poe reassured herself that this was fine and flattered herself with the realization that her first kiss had been claimed by a powerful King that thought she was beautiful.
A soft glimmer on the water brought Poe's attention back to the sky above and, to her disdain, the gradually sinking sun. The little finch's expression would sink a bit. "Oh.... I hadn't realized it was getting so late... I'm afraid I should be going soon." Her tone had taken a soft, mournful tone as she made her way to the lake's edge. Thankfully it would take a few minutes for her feathers to dry properly, which meant she had a few moments longer with Pale. "I hope this doesn't sound presumptuous or anything, but if you ever happen to visit Torquehelm in the future, I would be happy to see you." Poe couldn't even bring herself to meet the King's eyes now. No one in their right mind would come all the way out to Torquehelm when they had such a perfect life already. "I'm usually working at the Dragon's Den, a little coffee shop tavern near the outskirts."
(The tired has so caught up with me. >_> Sorry if this is a little craptastic. >_>)

For a second, a rather smarmy comment sat on the tip of Apocalypse's tongue, ready to leap out. Of course he knew how to kiss well, he'd been doing it since he was a wisp of thought in a woman's mind. But Poe didn't need to know that. Even more suprisingly, Apocalypse felt no inclination to tell her anyway. So he swallowed back the words, mouth straightening briefly to an almost serene smile before flashing his more standard - and toothy - grin. "...I try."
Really? Was that the best he could come up with?
Luckily, the man was distracted from his own inner struggles by the fact that Poe's attention was rather abruptly pulled away from him. One of his eyebrows quirked slightly, confused by the sudden shift, first in the direction of her gaze and then in her expression. His smile lingered on a moment, slowly fading on the edges when the woman began to speak again. Right. Sometimes, he didn't even bother to consider the time when it came to flirtations - night generally signified the next step in the process, the step he was generally aiming for. For a moment, Apocalypse wondered if he should ask if Poe would spend the night, honor him with her company for just a little longer.
Then he pushed those thoughts from his mind, lightly stroking her cheek and giving her a small nod and then following her in. Words still weren't coming to him properly, so he made the trip in silence. It was only when she began to speak again, so obviously avoiding his eyes, that he recovered his ability to communicate.
"I can honestly say, I've never really had cause to visit Torquehelm." He paused for a moment, then chuckled. "But you've just given me the best I could ever hope to have, so I will be adding it to my list of places to visit, and soon. It would give me the greatest joy to hear you perform." The location stored safely in his mind, the man waited a little longer for them both to dry, and then walked her to the front gate. Another kiss was given before she left - this one pressed against her cheek, and the King bid the Finch farewell.

What a gentleman masqueraded within this caged beast. Poe couldn't help but see the teeth, the danger, and yet... he was charming. Despite herself, the finch found it charming. Perhaps this was the Bad Boy Appeal that she'd always heard so much about but never really experienced before?
"You have such a way with words." Poe blushed to herself and tilted her gaze up to his once more, a soft smile on her beak. "I think you've sufficiently stolen my charm - it's not often that I'm at a loss of words." She bowed lightly, playfully theatrical. "I would be so honored to have you in my audience."
At the gate now, regretfully, Poe was assailed by another case of the butterflies as Apocalypse kissed her cheek and she, after a second to gather her courage, returned the peck with one of her own.
"Until we meet again, Apocalypse."
