Being hired as a private investigator meant she got to see Cards often at their most worst. She got used to delivering bad news to her clients long ago. So she had been happy to discover that her client's spouse hadn't been cheating and had shown them the proof. She expected a mass release of relief and possibly some guilt for having their loved one followed. Instead she'd been surprised by a fit of rage from the woman who had actually wanted her lover to be cheating on him so she could leave him. How fucking ridiculous was that? Lariel had mistakenly asked the mad woman why she didn't leave him if she didn't want to be in that relationship. The woman had said because of her reputation. She said it was better her lover be a cheater than for her to be willingly single. Fuck reputations... Lariel thought as she walked down the crowded streets of the Capitol's business section. She stared at the ground, not willing for some stranger to mistake the grimace and growl from her face as being meant for them. She was looking for a fight but didn't want the guilt that came after fighting with someone who hadn't really deserved it in the first place. But dammit, she was grumpy. She needed to calm down before too much longer. She had some friends to see and as her temper stood, she would be better off to cancel if she couldn't calm herself down. Stupid, ignorant female! The smell of freshly ground coffee wafted under her nose, making the fins on her back relax some of their rigid stance. Coffee. Yes, that would be the start of recovery for this shit hole of a day. The Bobcat followed her nose to a small cafe just a couple blocks down. She could already see quite a few patrons milling about the front of the store on the patio. Her stomach grumbled, also reminding her that she had forgotten to eat anything for breakfast earlier. With the anticipation of food and coffee, Lariel couldn't help but make her fins glow a yellow/orange color as she neared the establishment with her silver bell jingling from her speedy arrival.

One of those patrons happened to be the highlighter hued human who, had one of the waitresses not decided to settle herself down at his table, would have been quite happily sitting alone. He didn't mind the company, even if she talked forever and didn't let him interject much. As it was, he was leaning back in his chair idly listen to her babble about something or other, he honestly hadn't been giving her that much attention. The clouds... those were interesting though, you could make soooooo many shapes with them. But some little noise brought his attention back from the sky, this particular cafe opted not to have bell so that the atmosphere was more.. professional, which made sense with it's proximity to the stuffier parts of town .... so the tinkling of one was curious. Well holy snot on a stick.... was that... really? He set the legs of his chair back on the concrete and looked a little more closely, the waitress huffing at him now that he was obviously ignoring her. New form and some different mutations but.... he remembered those markings... and most of all, that bracelet. It just had to be the same bobcat. Blowing the waitress, and his coffee off, he hopped over the low little gate and all but sashayed over to the feline. Lariel!

Lariel had been growling and grumbling all the way down the street to the cafe. Her eyes downcast she hadn't seen anything but her own paws and the cracks in stone below. She was so caught up in her own thoughts an irritation she hadn't even heard anyone approaching her. She nearly ran into the man in front of her, missing him by a fraction of a second.
Lariel opened her mouth to say a few choice expletives when she stopped just short at hearing her name. Her anger vanished in the abrupt confusion, but not for long. She took a step towards the man and huffily placed her hands on her hips.
"Do I know you?" she growled, knowing full well he had stopped with enough space between them. She was embarrassed though. She hated being embarrassed. So as far as she was concerned, it was his fault. She flicked her eyes over him quickly, taking in the oh-so-bright coat he wore and his odd yet irritatingly-interesting hair. There was something very vaguely familiar about him. Maybe they had met before, but it must not have been that memorable a meeting. Certainly she would have remembered a Human Form that looked like that.
"Oh, and by the way. You should really watch where you're going next time."

She didn't seem to recognize him, well... that was... almost hurtful. Hum, he'd thought she'd remember him for sure but... oh, hey... wait. It had been a looooong time, hadn't it? Well, maybe she just didn't know it was him cause he was fur-less and she hadn't spoken to him since he went through that awkward, voice changing period? That -had- to be it! Well, he'd fix that ... in a minute. We have... more then once. Hold on a sec and I'll show you. He could help but wear a big goofy grin as he switched forms, it'd been awhile since he'd been anything but human... Anoushka had definitely turned that form into a habit. So what if he was part lowland? There was nothing wrong with it, at least in his mind. Ooooh, it felt so nice to have the extra warmth and hear the crackling of fire from his wings once more. She -had- recognize him now... he'd never met anyone else with wings of fire in his entire life. Remember me nooow? He'd just let her last rude comment go without any reply.... surely she'd feel bad about it now, yes?

Lariel noticed a change in the man's eyes when she didn't recognize him, but couldn't decipher it.
"Show me? What do you mean show..." She cut off mid sentence as she watched him change forms. Her eyes opened wide as she saw the fur sprout and change to orange and brown with familiar green swirls. She watched as bone wings covered in fire grew from his back and could even feel the warmth of them from how close they stood. It took some effort, but finally she tore her eyes away from the familiar wings and looked upon the canine face. Not the face she remembered. She remembered a little pup. A fiery little pup in more ways than one...
"Nova?" she asked hesitantly, the name coming to her easily. "Is that... really you?"
She couldn't keep the disbelief from her voice. It had been a very long time since she'd last seen the young child. He'd certainly left an impression on her, but this was a grown man. Could it have really been that long?
"Cassanova?"

When he shifted his tail swayed a bit from side to side in a hopeful manner, She'd remember ... right? It was an awkward few moments for him as he waited, his feelings might actually be really hurt if she didn't remember... she'd even come and visited them a few times before she vanished.
Ah, yes! At the confused utter of his name that huge, goofy grin returned to his muzzle and his tail picked up the pace and moved in a happy away.
Yes! I knew you'd remember! Long time no see.
He folded his arm across his midsection and bent forward into a bow, not being able to bite back on a little bit of a laugh.
At your service ... what in the name of all the Queens have you been up to?
This was so exciting, she probably had some amazing stories now!

She felt the beginning of a grin forming at the edge of her mouth but shoved it down. Nova always had that effect on her, whether she liked it or not. He always seemed to bring out the inner child in her. She watched his tail wag happily and gave in to a small smile and shook her head.
"Yes, it has certainly been a long time. Too long..." she mumbled that last softly. She watched him bow, rolling her eyes and raising her eyebrow. Same Nova. There had been a reason she'd left and never returned so suddenly. A reason she never really could admit to herself, let alone anyone else.
She took a deep breath and you could visibly see her let all her muscles relax. Already she'd forgotten about her earlier client fiasco. She would have thanked him for the distraction... if she remembered what she needed distraction from.
"Been working; staying busy. The usual." The usual of course not only meant her Private Investigation firm that she ran alone, but also her Black Market dealings. Sure, she had some stories. But those stories in the wrong ears would end up landing her in prison. That is some place she never wished to see.
"How about you? What have you been up to? You have certainly changed! You're all grown up now, and a human form!"

Still a workaholic, eh? That stuff'll kill you one day, you know.
He rose from his bow and gestured that she she walk toward the cafe, and moved to step before her and open the door. his parents had both stressed manners and the like on him and it wasn't forced anymore, it was a good habit now.
I did a lot of traveling to study some of the cultures of different realms. Came back recently and now I'm a Jack in the Court of Clubs.
His grin broadened a bit at that, he was pretty young when he got the position, and he was pretty certain his father's rank hadn't had any effect on his getting it either. Anoushka seemed like the type that wasn't so easily swayed by such things.
This place has amazing bear claws by the way.... and you just have to try the peppermint mocha latte.
Oh yes, he was a regular. And coffee really wasn't anything he needed ....

Lariel shrugged. "If I'm not working then what is there for me to do?" she asked, and meant it. She didn't really have any friends, and didn't care to spend any time with her mother or father. Outside of work there was just herself and her loneliness. She worked as much as she could to keep the loneliness at bay, but it only worked part of the time. She wasn't into hanging out at local bars much. Too many people there who piss her off. She'd gotten in too many fights that way with men who thought just because she enjoyed an alcoholic beverage that it meant she was looking to hook up.
Shaking herself from the memory, Lariel followed Nova to the cafe she'd been heading towards before being stopped. The smell of coffee soothed her nerves as she inhaled deeply. Oh that wonderful smell. It took only a few moments for her eyes to adjust to the dimmer light and when she looked around the cafe she approved. The place was very handsome and tidy.
The Bobcat looked to Nova with a surprise on her face. "You're part of the Courts?" Hearing the disbelief in her own voice she hurried on, "I mean, that's fantastic! I may not have pictured you heading in quite that direction, but good for you. If you're happy there, that is."
At the mere mention of food her stomached grumbled loudly. She grinned sheepishly. "A bear claw sounds like a great idea. Not so sure about the peppermint whatsit though. I think I'll just stick to regular coffee."
Lariel walked past him and up to the counter, placed her order and stood to one side to allow him to do the same.

He chuckled a bit at her response, shaking his head ever so slightly as well. He'd been a grade A spaz with the attention span of a goldfish when he was younger, even he couldn't have pictured himself in the courts either... even if his father was.
I spent a lot of time in the palace when I was younger. My father is is one of His Majesty's Kings ... watching him so much inspired me. I even like all the paperwork.
He much preferred the field work, but he could still hum and have a good time while stamping documents. He just had to make sure he didn't let himself get to distracted and mark things wrong.
Other then that .... I spend a lot of time here, or with my Banders. I dabble a little in breeding. Mostly golden ones.
And he was super proud of his two best. They were ridiculously well trained ... but he'd had the two for a really long time and invested a lot of time, energy and even a little blood into getting them there.
