The small mercy of being out of the rain shrank and shrank until it became so tiny it was entirely indistinguishable as its own entity, and Somhan lost track of it amid the abrupt terror of his already--mutating--body shifting again, expanding painfully, his skin inadequate to the rapid growth of--whatever was beneath it. He clutched at himself ineffectually, as though the force of his will and the press of his paws could stop it from happening. He tried to think of cakes and being alone in his kitchen but nothing worked.
The Jack. The Jack was going down the stairs. Nadja was right. Walking was right out. But he didn't want to be left behind. He slumped fully onto the ground, propelling himself forward by inches. But it wasn't long to the stairs. If he could reach them, he could just slide.
Which was exactly what he did, right past the Jack, the thump-thump-thump of his severely laden body hitting a step and bouncing along. It had been a terrible idea. It was unimaginably painful. He hit the final stage of his journey downward with an abrupt jolt, sliding fully onto his back at the bottom of the stairs.
"Oh," he said, breathlessly. "Something smells funny."

Heike was just about to suggest something to his sister when the swollen leveret took things in his own hands and rolled down the stairs. He watched with a mildly confused expression as the poor thing rolled past him.
He took a deep breath before descending the stairs as well. The quiet comment of the Morganberry made him raise an eyebrow. It wasn't until he reached the bottom of the stairs himself did he realize how bad the smell was. His nose wrinkled. Oh by the White Rabbit what had died down here?
"The last one needs to close the door behind them," he commented as he stared down the pathway. It didn't seem like it was that far of a walk, but with the ailing leveret it might be a bit complicated. If worse came to worse Nadja could just roll him until they were safe and hidden.
He took the lead, just in case something was down here besides the smell of death.

"Oh!" Nadja gasped as Somhan literally threw himself down the stairs, rolling to the base near Heike. "Oh heavens... This is a weird night." She groaned to herself before turning back to Zulimar. "Go ahead, I'll get the door." After the Selkie had gone on ahead, Nadja fastened the trapdoor shut and scampered quickly after her group.
Or, she meant to.
At the base of the stairs, Nadja nearly choked. She forced herself to maintain some poise and not gag loudly in front of everyone. It smelled like death (among other things) but just then Nadja couldn't think of anything but that awful decaying scent and a montage of worry. Why had Fleur come down this way? What if something had happened to her poor niece!?
Making sure to avoid breathing through her nose, Nadja took a deep breath and quickly composed herself before closing the distance that had grown between herself and the rest of the group. Heike had enough on his plate without having to worry about her as well.

(( Nadja will make it another few feet...before stumbling on the splayed remains of Fleur's corpse. It looks horrific, the entire front of her body is torn open and all of the bloody tracks and scents of death they've been following seem to have been coming from her...along with the scent of Cards. Somhan shudders and vomits a bit before his entire body flops down behind the others and tears slowly and horribly apart...revealing the monstrosity tearing its way forcibly out of his body!
ID: SD(They're all messed up right now, I'll get back to you.) Name: ---- Suit: Spades Rank: Nine Gender: Male Animal: Canine (Corgi) / Bird (Emperor Penguin) Region: Morganberry / Calloo Fjords Dealer: Bee Parents: Somhairle x NPC
Notes: This incredibly bizarre child seems to be about 18...as opposed to an infant like anything normal. The spikes jutting out of his back are retractable and he can extend them up to a foot out of his spine. His ears operate as opposable hands and the claws are blunt and large, like a Badgers. His Calloo heritage and age progression left him with an inherent knowledge of and fervent belief in Odom and the following thereof...however...the lack of any cream coloration on his body has left him with a rather incredible intolerance of those he cannot convert...he could be come dangerous if scorned. He has full knowledge of cultural norms, though no real detail as he has yet to live it, and an average education.
Basic Magical Ability: He can run up to 20mph in sprints and 20mph for up to an hour in extended runs. Moderate Magical Ability: When activated, he can see black-and-white clearly in the dark. This can be activated and deactivated at will. Should he look at a moderate to bright light with this ability activated, however, he will experience intense pain and be left with a splitting headache for up to one day. Strong Magical Ability: When activated, he can create up to one gallon of drinking water up to five times per day.
The little Selkie Leveret seems to have fallen behind in the shed, but you should all go on without her, if she was too frightened to progress into this miniature Hell, who could blame her? An awful feeling begins to permeate the area...it seems like it's coming from outside!
In front of them is a door, it looks as though it would open up onto the stairs that could lead them into the Palace through the cellar! Quickly, before more of you explode! Nadja slips in some of the fluids dripping from Fleur's corpse and she is splattered in horrible gore...something in her entire body starts to tingle from the tail up... Oh, God. What just happened to her!?
((She will mutate slowly and painfully over the course of 10 minutes.))

Zulimar followed the group into the shed with as much blind obedience as she could fake, looking where she was directed and sniffing around when she was told to sniff around. She was more or less waiting for them to leave, though, so she could be alone for ten minutes or an hour or so and break away from the sheer freakiness that was overtaking the area they were in.
A hop skip and a jump north and everything would be fine and dandy!... if she could get out of the blasted shed without being noticed. Her Exalted Leaders would hardly understand that she was not deserting them, merely not wishing to be forced into partaking in their crazy crap ideas of figuring things out.
So she waited as patiently as she could and slowly edged her way out of the shed while watching to see if she'd escaped notice yet in whatever chaos was going on just out of her eyesight.

Heike was in no way prepared to stumble across the bloody mess that had been his daughter. The mutilation of her corpse was beyond anything the Jack had ever had the pleasure of stumbling upon, and it took all of his willpower not to actually vomit. The sight of the tracks and the sight of the mix of the smells didn't make much sense.
But he didn't really have time to process the scene in front of him as he heard the sound of wrenching. His head snapped around as he stepped a bit in the gory mess that had been Fleur to see the Morganberry leveret at the back of the line to practically explode.
He wasn't going to stick around and wait. No. He was going to take his sister and run the only way he could. Nothing went well as Nadja was splashed with some of what was left of Fleur she seemed to be in horrible pain. He cursed, scooped up his sibling as best he could, and kicked the door down so he could promptly bolt through it.
Fleur was dead, something was happening to his sister, someone exploded, what the hell was going on?

Suddenly the world had morphed into a horrible nightmare.
Nadja had scampered to catch up with the group proper and, in doing so, nearly stumbled into her brother when he came to an abrupt halt. What she saw from around his legs made her stomach twist and her heart leap into her mouth. Fleur! And then the Morganberry leveret was puking as his insides began to swell and his body literally tore itself apart before their eyes.
A horrible choked sound of fear and panic rent itself free from Nadja's lips and the leveret stumbled backward, past her brother and into the gore that was once Fleur. It was only then that the scream escaped her properly, spurred on by the painful tingle that began to shoot up her spine.
She writhes in pain, everything changing, growing, lengthening. It all feels so terribly wrong and there's absolutely nothing she can do but wail as her brother grabs her up into his arms and takes off. Through tearful eyes she sees the culprit of Somhan's destruction tumble free of the gore that was one a leveret.
The little body was stout with strangely stumpy legs and a tiny tail and though it sported rabbit-like ears they, and the creature's scent on whole, was absolutely bizarre. "By the White Rabbit..." A voice gasped out as the door exploded under the force of Heike's kick, "it's a card." It took Nadja a moment to realize it was her voice uttering that terrible realization. A card had exploded out of a Rabbit!

(Zulimar? If you're going to follow at all, now's the time.)
((Hieke exploded into the basement proper, the door slamming onto the floor and making the entire place echo. Enormous, almost cavernous, with small, floating lights (though they weren't on) near the ceiling. Boxes, some of them even in chains, line the walls. Stacked high and full of old furniture...it's dark and a bit chilly...you should probably try to get upstairs and get out while you still can.
Meanwhile, Horatio comes to...he's lying in the doorway to the Spades Palace basement, at the very top of the stairs...and can hear voices from downstairs...and upstairs. The place is chilly and absurdly empty... What was he doing here? And what is he to do?))

His sister confirmed his terror with a simple statement. The leveret had exploded to produce a Card. The physical impossibility of it all was mind boggling. When the door hit the ground the clatter made him involuntarily twitch. He almost dropped his sibling. He was struggling to keep a proper hold of his darling sister who was changing beneath his grip. He clutched her as tightly as he could when he stumbled forward, not bothering to look back. They had to get out. They had to get out now. He frantically looked around in the dark for an exit. His ears pulled back as he trudged forward, his sister preventing him from going as fast as he wanted to. He noted that it was freezing as he looked at all the rows of boxes. Boxes. More boxes. Bloody boxes. Where were the stairs?! "Argh! This isn't happening! We need to get out now!"Meanwhile a very confused penguin groaned as his eyes fluttered open. Horatio rarely went out drinking, and when he did he was normally a cheapskate, but right now he certainly felt like he had a night on the town. With a stubby wing he lamely tried to rub his temples. Where was he? This didn't look like his apartment in the city.... He looked around, eying the stairs. Why was he near a flight of stairs and...? Voices? The place seemed terribly empty and the chill was uncomfortable. After a good deal of wiggling to right himself, he hopped onto the stair below him. He was careful to make sure that the his binding didn't drag him down the flight of stairs, he didn't need to break his neck today. "Hello? Is anyone down there?"

Zulimar peered around, and ascertained that she was now alone.
Alone in the dark in the middle of nowhere, with dead people and nasty smells and creepy sounds, and this was a good idea why?
The leveret sighed and did a quick internal debate to decide whether or not to trail along in the way back and remain unnoticed, but hopefully protected, or venture off on her own. Protected. Protection was such a nice word, wasn't it? There were rumors of people getting eaten out here... Perhaps protection was a nice way to go.
She sped off after them, slinking among the trees until she caught their scent again, by stairs they had obviously traversed. She hankered past them and stopped when she could hear their voices, but couldn't see them. Why all the screaming and yelling and painful wrenching sounds? Why was catching back up a good idea, again?
