The rush of satisfaction that hit him after slicing clean through his brother's wing was short-lived as the man reassumed his human form. Crap. That meant his magic would be even more effective than ever, and for all that Bernard was a scrawny little scrap of a man, his magic had always been beyond compare. The praise of their parents rung in his ears from years past, petty jealousy that he had ignored but that had always been heard.
He hated talking while he fought and ignored the man's taunts and screams, but the ring of flames that suddenly erupted from his collarbone was something he could not ignore. He screamed and immediately activated his pain tolerance, sending it down to a more manageable level but only for a short while. He didn't have the length in that ability he knew his brother did, and it dulled the burning rather than allowing him to put it from his mind entirely. As if he would want to forget about the flames scorching at his face!
Gripping his weapon even tighter, painfully so in his agony, he called up an ability that he had worked on long ago to impress Lin. A sudden gust of wind whipped up from behind him, blowing at the flames and extinguishing them after a few seconds of constant gusting. At the same time, he braced himself as the wind rushed past and straight at his brother. He hoped the scrawny man would blow over like a twig, or at least lose his balance enough for Blaine's next swing to be effective. He aimed for the man's torso and swung, the pain of burnt feathers and scorched flesh making him screech as he did so.

"Wha-no!"
Was all Bernard managed to get out before the wind put out his King's ability as though it were nothing and slammed him up against the far wall. This spell...it was the one he had encouraged his damnable sibling to learn while he was trying to think up ways to impress Lin. If he hadn't bothered...so much...
"NO!"
He writhed against the blast, managing to slide along the wall slightly just as he heard his brother scream at him.
"Nnnguh!"
Blaine's halberd swung seemingly out of nowhere and cut into his side. He didn't know how deep the wound was and he didn't have time to find out. This was nearly enough to begin to override his ignore pain ability, it was nearly unbearable on top of everything else.
He was no longer standing at least, plastered to the wall he need not worry about his leg. Clenching his teeth and feeling hot tears run down his face again he cursed and activated his Jack's ability.
All of the light in the room vanished suddenly as Bernard spoke four words in the Lowland tongue. He could see his brother's outline and the outline of various objects in the room. He still couldn't escape the wind unless he got behind Blaine though. Wriggling along the wall as best his wounded side would allow. Bernard tried to get as far as the bed in the corner of the room.
Blaine would be able to see nothing, even the light from the moon outside was stopped from entering, he would be in total darkness. But not for long...

The wind had been his ally ever since they were both younger and Bernard had taught him how to use it properly. Oh, the irony! It was enough to make him laugh, an angry sound and too harsh to be in honest amusement. Watching his brother slam up against the wall like that, feeling the satisfying give of his flesh beneath the blade of the halberd... Blaine didn't even have to step in especially close to get in that attack and make his brother begin to bleed in earnest.
And then he heard words, four of them in a language he didn't know, and suddenly all of the light in the room disappeared. He let out a startled cry and swung his weapon once, then again, before he realized that the slimy little man had moved. Well. There was only one way he knew of to accurately pinpoint the location of someone in absolute darkness. He'd used it once or twice to his advantage, and not even his brother was immune from it.
His eyes narrowed until they were nearly closed and he concentrated on listening while his mind sent out his PAIN ability, the feeling akin to pulling out that pretty swirled ponytail by the roots. If he got a loud enough noise, he would lunge for it and try to rend at the man with his free hand's talons, wherever he reached in the darkness.

Bernard edged along the wall, feeling with his leg gingerly until he could fee the edge of the bed. He allowed himself the smallest smile and tried to get further around the wall.
Lin, Lin I'll kill him. I'll get him back for you and Serafino...oh god no...Lin.
He had just managed to negotiate the corner when it hit him.
A searing agony that felt as though he were being scalped. He hadn't expected it and at first all he could manage was a choked gurgle, the sound would not make it through the rush of wind. But the second wave that hit him was too much, it overrode his pain blocking ability in a rush that he had not expected and he yelled in agony.
As soon as he did he knew it had been a stupid thing to do. His brothers' talons that were very suddenly embedded in his chest over his red rank marking, confirmed this error.
"AAAARGH! I- NAAAAAAAAH!"
He wracked his brain for a spell...and got one. While his brother was still touching him, he spat at the outline of the hand on his chest. Then he managed to gasp out a small verse.
The spit would then ignite on his brother's flesh, like oil on fire. It would sink in through the skin and slowly burn through the flesh. It would spread up inside the arm...the only way to stop it would be to cut off the offending appendage.
Finally close enough to use it on you with reason, eh Blaine?
He thought, as the room began to spin slightly.

Feeling his claws sink into flesh was the sweetest 'justice' he had ever felt, all the pain and humiliation of years in exile bubbling up into a snarl as he clenched his fist. And then he felt a small gob of liquid hit his hand, which turned in the next instant to a crawling, searing, consuming pain that all but wiped his already-weakened pain tolerance away. He could feel every agony, from the horrific burns on his face and neck to the crawling sensation searing up his arm.
Burning through his flesh.
He screamed in agony and ripped his hand out of his brother's chest, clenched talons taking along anything they could before he shook off the gore and stumbled back. His halberd... he felt its pole against his foot as he step back and felt the creeping pain eat further up his arm, further, past the elbow and now going up through his bicep. He half-fell down to grab the weapon and, with a groan of pain and foreboding, brought the weapon to bear against his arm. Whatever the spell was, he couldn't let it spread, couldn't let it eat into his chest and from there, everything.
Blood sprayed freely in the darkness of the room and he choked back another agonized scream, taking a firm stance and calling the wind again, this time aiming it sideways from the opposite wall. With any luck, it would send his brother sprawling to the side and he could attack him... rend his flesh, tear him apart... his arm! He screamed once more, this time the sound more anger and rage with the pain.

The talons were torn abruptly out of his chest, but Bernard had been expecting it and braced himself for the pain. He was fortunate in that it was mostly skin that was torn, rather than the muscle beneath. His Hearts marking and most of the "K" coming away in his brothers' fist.
Regardless the distraction broke the concentration of both brothers. Bernard's darkness ceasing with a "snap", and Blaine's wind dropping very suddenly, causing Bernard to drop to the bed. While his brother was preoccupied, he flipped through the pages of the book still clenched tightly in his left hand. Mumbling through a spell quickly, he readied it in his mind as his brother screamed in agony.
Too late.
Bernard let out a yelp of dismay as the wind started up again...from another direction. It ripped him off the bed and slammed him into the floor halfway across the room. His eyes widened and he gave a throttled gasp as he felt the other tendon in his left leg snap at the awkward landing, rolling up inside his flesh like a broken rubber band and causing searing agony, his body spasming slightly form the shock.
Trying his best to flip over, Bernard thought hard of his brother's face and concentrated on his PAIN ability.
He wouldn't be able to hold it long like this...but hopefully it would distract his sibling long enough for him to get up and preform the spell.
The pain that would soon hit his brother would feel like a hot iron shoved into his intestines...
Hopefully it would stop him...it needed to. The room was spinning in earnest now...something inside him was damaged...badly form the halberd.
"I need to kill...you...damn. Oh god, Lin..."

((We acted this out on the floor of the dorm room to figure out the timing. This is what happened. )) As soon as his brother's pain ability hit him, Blaine dropped to his knees, screaming, feeling as though a hot poker was being shoved and jerked around his intestines, burning and causing him to drop the concentration on his wind spell as his arms clutched around his stomach. He screamed more, eyes going to half-slits and tearing with the pain as he stumbled unsteadily to his feet. It was either kill or be killed. If he didn't get Bernard, if he wasn't on him like a maggot on a corpse, the man would do something far worse than make him cut off his own arm. He knew it. And there was no more running. When Bernard started to stand, his concentration was drawn away from his pain ability and Blaine could move again without choking on bile. With a lurching, unsteady gait, he lunged for the human man and shoved into him as he started doing something to prepare for another spell. The eagle didn't know, couldn't focus clearly on that, was only intent on slamming into him and punching at his face as hard as he could - with the added bonus of his Jack's ability lending power to the slamming attack. He wasn't able to aim clearly, with his brother moving beneath him and the pain from multiple wounds screaming along his every nerve, but he smashed his fist into Bernard's collarbone and felt it shatter under the force of his attack. At the same time, his beak lunged forward, half-open to try and rend. It stretched the burnt skin of his face and made him want to heave, but he couldn't afford something like that, not now.

Bernard watched his brother stumble when the pain ability hit him, trying to take advantage of the situation, he staggered upright. His left leg was useless, and he was relying on his arms and the wall to get him off the ground. Sadly, doing this lost him most of his concentration, and he felt his grasp on his pain ability slipping away from him, just like his stability.
He tried his best to draw the marking on the wall, but he didn't get the chance. Blaine hit him like a ton of bricks, his fist soaring out of no where and plowing into the left side of Bernard's collar bone.
His jaw dropped as he felt the bone snap, his neck muscles straining to keep him steady and his left leg jerking spasmodically, beyond his control. Then the beak descended.
Too fast...too fast.
"No! NONONONO! Aaaaa! Blai- Aaa!"
He threw out one of his last abilities. He had been saving it for when his brother got his halberd back but...it couldn't wait. With some of his last vestiges of energy, he threw forward a shield spell. It would hit his brother in the face at a full 5 miles per hour like a steel plate and hopefully plow him a few feet away. It would then lay on his brother's chest, an obstructing weight, for ten seconds. It was his only hope.
The shield shot out...but a few seconds too late. The tip of his brother's beak drove into his right eye.
Bernard was unable to distinguish different amounts of pain any longer, he just knew that his face was added to the pile of agony...just as it had been so long ago..
After his brother was forced off of him. He would struggle to his feet as best he could, pulling his book with him. Straining to read through the blood, he shouted a few words, his breath ragged, his heart beating irregularly.
Within another few seconds a small black cloud would appear over Blaine's head, it would follow his every movement...and the begin to pour acid.
Bernard's chest heaved as he gulped in air and tried to keep himself steady on his right leg, his hands clinging desperately to the wall.

The shield shoved Blaine back with enough force that he fell near where he'd left his halberd. He tried struggling, punching it away, but the invisible barrier resisted his attempts (die roll - failure for Blaine) and he was forced against the floor, screaming in rage, for a full ten seconds. In that time, his brother was able to get enough of a wind to actually cast another damned spell. Of course, he didn't know about it until the shield spell let up and he could force himself to a sitting position.
At which point something began pouring down on his head as he groped with his right arm for his halberd. He used its pole to force himself to his feet, but as he did so, he felt the worst pain he had yet been subjected to. It felt like acid eating away at his back, his chest, his hair and scalp and oh gods there was acid pouring down on his head!
He screamed, throat going slightly hoarse from the sound, as it ate away at one of his eyes. The only, only thing now burning through his thoughts was killing his brother. Bernard had to die. He had to die. With weapon in hand, his hair swinging around to leave his other eye vulnerable and blinding him completely, he flung himself at the wall - but Bernard had moved (die roll - success for Bernard)! He smacked into the wall and slid down and to the side, his right arm shooting out to try and grab anything for balance...
...and there he was. As Blaine felt the acid eating away at his skin, starting into his skull, he knew that he was going to die. He knew this was going to kill him. And the only thing he could think was that Bernard was going down with him.
His beak was sizzling as the acid slowly worked on corroding it and he shoved it at Bernard's body blindly in a peck, his other arm shoving with the hard resin of his halberd into anything soft and giving and gods he was going to die!
