Javaid found himself smiling as Conway spoke, nodding his head a little in thought. Not educated? If that was true than it was a pity, he was a smart boy even if he wasn't formally schooled. Javaid would have to press a bit into this.
"Really? Tell me what sort of reading interests you, and I'll check if I have it." Books were a comfort zone for Javaid, something familiar that he could focus himself on. He knew plenty about the subject and didn't have to delve too deeply into his own emotions. It was best that way.
The question caused Javaid to pause slightly, biting his lip briefly. He had been curious, but he didn't want to press. Well... "Well, yes. I was curious, but I hadn't thought it'd be proper to ask. If you'd be inclined to tell, I'd be interested in hearing." He smiled slightly, inclining his head in curiosity.

"I only really read the newspaper on a regular basis. Book aren't something I can normally afford, but I like history..." Conway shrugged as he trailed off. He also loved all the fairy tales about happy families and cheerful people, but he wasn't about to admit that out loud. That would remained buried with the stories he read to his sister as a child.
He raised an eyebrow. So Javaid had curiosity. That was a comforting notion. He was in a room with someone who was normal. His lip twitched into a half smile as he looked up at the jackal. "I was going to visit my old home, but then I ended up feeling ill halfway through the trip. Somehow I ended up on your doorstep. My fervor was pretty high so I don't know exactly how I ended up on your steps." Conway half shrugged. Hopefully this was less socially awkward.

"History, hm? Well, I should have some of those. I'll bring you a few, then, and if you like any, I'll let you take it with you when you go. It'd serve you better than me."
Javaid was indeed a real person and he possessed a great deal of curiosity, especially so for the boy who laid before him. He was young and handsome and Javaid was fascinated by him. He'd been wanting to ask questions like this for a while but had resisted until now.
"Is your old home near here?" The Jackal paused before persisting, knowing already that he'd regret his words. "Perhaps once you're well I can help you find your way there?"
Javaid hadn't left this temple in... Suits, he had no clue. It'd been such a long, long time. He'd been far too caught up in his work at the temple and his own studies to leave the temple.

"T-thank you," Conway said with a note of surprise evident in his voice. The young man shifted onto his side. It was a lot more comfortable than is back, and it was easier for him to think properly when he wasn't in so much discomfort.
The home question threw him off completely. Honestly he had no idea how close he was to his place of origin. He could just use his family name as a description, but that was terribly dangerous. He didn't want to grab the attention of his Uncle or anything like that.
Conway swallowed hard before speaking. "It's a bit complicated, so I think I'll pass on your other to help. I don't want to involve you in any of my complicated family matters, you know." He shrugged. "I don't know how close we are anyway. I think I'm pretty far off course since I didn't recognize my surroundings."

Javaid smiled, pleased that he could finally offer the boy something worthwhile. "You're very welcome, Conway." It was really the least he could do, Conway had kept him company for longer than most people did... Unwilling or not, it was still nice.
As Conway went on, the jackal's brows furrowed ever so slightly and he nodded slowly in thought. Complicated family matters? Was Conway in trouble? The boy had mentioned broken homes, but not trouble. "You're not in any trouble, are you?" The question was asked with a considerable dose of concern in his voice but the concern was far more for Conway than it was for himself. Trouble could be taken care of if it dared to venture into his Necropolis, but he didn't know how well off Conway would be once the male left.
"Well, regardless... If you're in need of anything, just let me know. I'd be glad to help, complicated family matters or not."

Trouble was a matter of opinion. His very existence was the source of grief for so many people. A Joker was something that shouldn't exist, something that didn't exist for so many people. His Uncle and sister were the only people who really knew what it meant for him. And those were the two people he absolutely couldn't involve.
"Complicated describes the trouble I'm in. I can't say much else," He shrugged. If he told someone the truth it would probably get him in more trouble. That or he would he owned by someone. Conway shuddered at the very thought. He didn't want to be someone's property or someone's toy. He was a person, and he had every intention of being a person for as long as he could mange. That or he was going to drop dead.
"It's nothing that can be fixed so easily, but... thanks for the offer I guess."

Javaid wished he could understand just exactly what Conway was going through. The boy seemed constantly burdened but he was far too young for such an existence. At least in Javaid's opinion.
The jackal nodded quietly. He wouldn't press if Conway didn't want to tell, it wasn't his way. He'd just sit back and wait until Conway was either willing to say more, or the boy went off on his own. There was really nothing more he could say on that, nor little he could do.
"Very few things can be easily fixed, of course. I never imagined it'd be any other way. You're welcome, though...and, again, the offer will stand for as long as you'd need."
Javaid wasn't entirely sure why he so fully felt the need to care for Conway. The lack of any living family, or even friends, probably explained it but Javaid would be the last to realize it.

It was an awkward moment. He wanted to say something, but he couldn't find the words. Dragging someone into his life wouldn't work anyway. That and he didn't know how nice Javaid actually was. There was still the risk that the jackal would try to use him if he found out the truth.
Damn complications. They needed a change of subject. Something that wouldn't focus on him or family. Maybe if he changed the subject to something about Javaid it would make the jackal uncomfortable enough to drop conversation all together.
"What made you decided to completely isolate yourself like this?" Conway found himself saying. He closed his eyes briefly. That wasn't exactly what he meant to ask in the first place, but there was no taking it back. He could add to it a little bit. "I mean, not many people would choose a job like this."

Well, if Conway was aiming to silence Javaid with awkward conversation then he had definitely hit the mark.
"I inherited it." He murmured slightly, clasping his hands together and steepling them in uncertainty. How did he explain this? "The temple has been passed down through my family for generations, I couldn't refuse it when it was my turn."
The jackal sighed a little and then slowly unclasped his hands. "It's not really as bad as it would seem. People come by from time to time and when it's just me, it gives me time to focus on my research."
Javaid hesitated the moment he spoke, realizing that this would open up a whole new avenue of uncomfortable questioning. If the boy hadn't thought him odd before then he definitely would now. That was just the way it went. The moment people realized exactly what he filled his free time with they only avoided him more.
Good job, Javaid, he sighed to himself, just dig yourself an even deeper grave.
