Peaches was thoroughly confused when she felt his arms wrap around her. She blinked a few times as she listened to his words. Her whole entire body tensed. Family, extended or otherwise, really did cause a lot of problems.
She slipped out of his grip to get up and put the teacup some place safer. Before he could say another word she half tackled and half hugged him, forcing him to flop backwards on the bed with her very much on top of him. With a very satisfied cat smirk she looked directly into bi-colored his eyes. "Thank you," Peaches said with a smirk still on her face. "It's been a very long time since someone has hugged me or sad any words of comfort. You have no idea how much that means to me."
It meant enough to her that the tears that had been threatening her this entire time subsided. She really did miss her brother with all her heart, and someone saying "sorry" rather than "get over it" was something she needed to hear.
She licked the Hatter on the nose without a second thought. "Sorry if I brought up any bad memories mentioning the Courts. Family is complicated business."

Hatter blinked for a moment, watching her get up and move to set her tea down. Had he...offended her somehow? She didn't seem the sort that would be so easily upset by something like a hug. His baffled look made his confusion quite clear but before he could open his mouth to apologize she had abruptly tackled him, knocking him clear to the bed as she wrapped her arms around him instead. Relaxing into the bed, he lifted his arms and tangled them smoothly around her waist.
Her weight was actually quite comfortable on top of his and he was happy to have her there. Smiling warmly, he reached up and stroked her face. "You're very welcome, Peaches. I like hugging you." He chimed happily, leaning up to nuzzle her. "I'm glad I could offer some kind words, dear. You deserve 'em."
The lick brought a wide grin to his face and he returned the friendly lick with one of his own.
"Thank you as well, you would happen to be the only one who showed me concern in that area as well." He smiled faintly. "Not many people know about my family life, I...just felt it was only right of me."

Not many people knew about her family life besides Loreta and a few other people scattered throughout the realms. It wasn't someone she usually spoke of without lying through her teeth or breaking down into tears. She propped her chin on Hatter's chest before continuing anything.
"Secrets then." Peaches said as she wiggled a bit to get comfortable. He was nice and warm, that certainly was enough to make her purr, but she still had more to say. "If you want to ask me anything you can go ahead and I'll answer as long as you keep it to yourself. If I every found out you told someone else my secrets I'd hit you so hard with my fan you wouldn't have a face left. And that's saying a lot since you have a very pretty face."
Of course she wouldn't hold a double standard. "I'll keep you your secrets to myself even if I'm tortured. I'm very protective of things that belong to someone else but in part become mine."

Hatter shifted slightly beneath her, getting more comfortable as she did the same. Peaches was very pretty, and very comfortable, and he would've been quite happy to have her stay right there for the rest of the night. Absently he took to stroking her hair, petting her like one would pet a feline though in an undeniably more intimate manner. Such a lovely girl~
The return to cheerful conversation definitely perked his attention and he burst into a wide grin. Secrets indeed! He had a lot of questions to ask, though he would stay away from family now that he was aware of the sorrow buried there.
"No worries, Peaches. I completely intended to keep your secrets, even without threat of face-loss." He grinned handsomely, kissing her playfully on the nose. "I'm just as protective as you are when it comes to another secrets. Especially the secrets of a friend." He squished her lightly again him, grinning again. "Ask me anything as well, I'll answer honestly."
As honestly as he could. Some things fell beneath the line of secrets that he could not give up, not even under torture as Peaches herself had said.
"Why do you wear gloves?" He went from stroking her hand to seeking out her hand. However, instead of attempting to remove the glove himself -that would be a line of invasion above even him- he simply mingled his fingers with hers once more.

She was purring rather nicely from all the stroking and the warmth. Happiness is warm fuzzies after all. It was nice to hear that he would protect secrets as well. If he was lying about that.... well Peaches was willing to take a bit of a chance.
Peaches was hardly surprised by the question. She was a little reluctant to answer promptly though. A worried noise escaped her throat. Handsome man kissing her playfully or not that was a serious question, but she said she would answer. Fun.
"You know how to pick them," she said as she took her hand away from his and slipped off the glove to her right hand. She wiggled her hands to reveal the numerous scars of strange looking writing that covered her hands. "Someone I don't remember very well carved these in my hands. Both of them. I haven't the slightest idea what it says because it's a language I've never had the pleasure of knowing."
Out in the open it didn't seem like a big deal. It was though. There was a lot more to the story she wasn't going to reveal unless he prodded her. She hoped he wouldn't. "If you can tell me something equally morbid you get a kiss on the lips," she gave him a wicked grin.

Hatter loved that sound, the purring of a contented cat. Especially, a cat as sweet and attractive as Peaches was. The worried noise, however, caused him to hesitate. Ah, had he hit another soft spot? He really did choose them well! In fact, he almost felt bad.
Leaning back he allowed her to remove the glove. The scars beneath were quite interesting but judging by her reactions he could also guess they were more painful than she let on. He reached out curiously, running his fingers over those strange marks. He didn't recognize the language either, but he was definitely going to find out. He'd have to search around a bit, but he was sure he could. Already the images were sealed in his memory in perfect detail.
"Oh...Peaches." He let his hand fall back to her hips, his arms sliding around her waist again. "You've had a hard life for such a wonderful girl."
A kiss in exchange for an equally dark secret? Now how could he deny that? The question was, however, what secret of his matched? So few things had happened to his person that could compare to her, he almost felt bad. Well, there was one he had that might gain him the kiss and get a bit more information. Because there was most definitely more to her hands than she let on.
"My mother was murdered by an ambitious Queen of Diamonds, because of me, when I was 10." He smirked a little, though it didn't immediately reach his eyes. It was a painful subject, much like her hands, but it left much to be questioned. Which was exactly his intention. The more questions she asked, the more he could ask. "Is that enough to warrant that kiss you mentioned?"

"Easy compared to some of my close friends," she muttered. As she watched him intently. If he gave he a good enough secret she might have share a bit more on her hands then? Something she hadn't told anyone but herself?
She blinked. That was an interesting secret all right. "To have that happen... you must be extremely special. I would ask why but..." She shifted her weight and gave him a rather prolonged kiss on the lips. Peaches hovered for a moment after finishing to look him in the eyes. Another secret then? Peaches returned her chin to his chest a smile on her face.
"I'll tell you something I've never told another living soul." Peaches wrapped her hands around the Hatter's neck for a bit of comfort. She was telling a stranger she just met something she told no one else. At least he was a comfortable stranger. "My brother and I used to go to the edge of Tulgey Wood together, which is were my hands were mangled and.... where my brother was killed. He may have been left on my door step but whoever killed him knew about us taking off our bindings there." For a brief moment her grip tightened around his neck.
"Now... why would someone kill your mother to get to you? If I'm deserving of another secret that is."

Hatter's smile remained in place, but it was different than usual. Something about it was closer to a frown than an actual smile and his eyes definitely did not hold their usual twinkle. Special indeed, sometimes he wished it wasn't so...but that was not a thought for the present. No, especially not once Peaches leaned in and their lips connected at last. That brought the twinkle back to his eyes for sure and he tilted his head just slightly in order to return the kiss in earnest.
Definitely worth it.
When she pulled back, he smiled honestly and tightened his hold on her. He couldn't interpret her hold on him as anything but a need for comfort and he was eager to give it. Or, perhaps, to also receive it in turn. They had both revealed more on this evening than they ever had before, and the worst of it was making its debut even as he pulled her body closer to his.
"You are...most definitely deserving of more." Once more he gave her a peck on the nose, this time though the kiss was more consoling than anything. What could he say to what she had given him? Words of consolation didn't seem enough, though it had answered a question of his: could she remove her bindings since her jacket was currently undone? Obvious she could, and she had. So, the only thing he could really give her in return...was his secret. "This is for your ears alone, Peaches." He knew she said she'd keep the secret to herself, but he couldn't help the warning from falling off his lips. "My mother was The Queen of Diamonds, when I was a boy... She died shortly after my 10th birthday, when I created Doorie and when...my rank was revealed." He in turn tightened his arms around her but also leaned up so that his lips touched her ear as he spoke. For the most part, he had reserved himself from being cryptic around Peaches. Now he let the familiar safety of riddles return to him. "Technically, I do not exist...but every Court desires my loyalty."
He leaned back and untangled his arms from Peaches's waist so that he could loosen his tye and unbutton his shirt only to reveal a bare chest beneath. Too bare, even. Not rank nor suit contrasted his skin and yet that lack was more blatantly obvious than if one had been there, for it labeled him one of the rare and unheard of Jokers.
"The Queen that killed my mother thought she could sway my loyalty and assume power with a ripe young Joker beneath her. It backfired for her, I think, quite terribly."

Shock. That could have been the word to use. Disbelief could have been another. No really, there were no words for something like this. Jokers existed. And... he had lost his mother just because of the way he was born.
Something hit Peaches like a ton of bricks. She suddenly found herself choking on her words as she snuggled closer to Hatter. And then she burst into tears.
Peaches never cried in front of people. Cream and her brother were the only ones who had ever seen her cry. She had never flat out broken down in front of someone. It was just something that she was able to hold together. Now, however, she had told someone one of her deepest secrets, and in return he had told her one of his. Something that obviously meant more than his life.
"I'm sorry," she sniffled before burying her face in his chest. "I'm sorry that you had to go through that and I'm... just so sorry." Her voice was muffled by his chest, honestly if he heard it she didn't know. She just felt better saying it this way. Even if it wasn't the whole source of her tears.
How she desperately wanted her brother back.
