Rai sighed at the innocuous question; she really was doing a good job, but he didn't want to answer and didn't want to talk.
"There's no time anymore." He mentally grimaced at his own words. There was a more immediate connotation to that than he meant. "There hasn't been for awhile." Not much better, but it was a bit better. Though there certainly would be less time now. *&$%.
Rai almost seemed to flinch at her teasing, instinctively turning his head away just a little bit more and ducking it slightly so the brim covered his eye further. For once, however, it wasn't the bones he didn't want seen. "You have an obligation to remain now," he answered quietly, staring moodily at his beer. The words could have been teasing, almost flirty, in another situation, another time in the bar, perhaps.

That probably wasn't the best question to ask, she knew why he hadn't been here, and it was only going to bring his mind back to why he wouldn't be here much for the next, oh god, who knows how long. Mentally kicking herself, she tried to shrug it off, but found herself unable to come up with anything to steer the conversation away from that alley.
Her forced train of thought was interrupted when he turned away, something grabbing ahold of her heart and squeezing when he turned away from her. Or at least, that's the image that came to her head when she felt the familiar pang of pain deep down inside her. In reality, she couldn't feel much to do with her heart.
"Says who? I'm probably as drunk as you are... alright, maybe a little more. If anyone's obligated, I suppose now you're obligated to keep an eye on me." Her hand reached out without thinking, grabbing him by the arm closest to her, trying to bring him back to face her, though she was embarassed by the pain she couldn't keep off her face. This was the wrong situation for someone like her. It was too easy for every bit of self loathing to hurt her in ways she had forgotten she could hurt. She barely knew him, but he got to her like an old lover.
She just wanted to take that pain away, to erase all of that god damned self loathing. Would it be enough to stare at him, tell him he was gorgeous? That would be overstepping all kinds of boundaries as his King. Did he think of that, too, she wondered?
"Please look at me." Her voice was soft, more than she'd intended for it to be. Vulnerable, in a way she didn't like. She'd sat down thinking she'd be his anchor for the night, but the truth was she couldn't walk away, didn't want to be left out in the cold, alone tonight, as always. It was pitiful but true. She'd sit here in silence until the light of the morning came in through the blinds, just so long as he didn't up and leave on her. Especially not like this, not staring into his beer like a puppy who'd just been kicked to the ribs.

He nearly laughed when she said she was probably as drunk as he; yes, she had something harder, but he had quite a bit more time put into getting drunk than she. Still, any amusement was swiftly shot when she grabbed her hand on his arm. He tensed reflexively, not because she touched him but because someone touched him without being invited to do so. People did not initiate physical interaction with him and it was. . . strange. Not necessarily bad, but strange.
"Please look at me."
His eyes closed as he tried to fight against wot he heard in her voice. His hand clenched around his glass, making the tendons flex beneath her palm. He did turn, though, grey-green eyes going to her face as he fought to keep his own features blank. Emotions were too high; Rai didn't trust himself right then. He swallowed hard, pretending that his eyes weren't going to give away his own inner reeling.

When he tensed, she felt like a rabbit poking at the fox. She had been shifting between whether this was the right decision or not, and not because she didn't want to, but because she didn't want to get backhanded by the frustrated and emotional man. When it seemed tensing was the worse she was going to get, she let out a small shaking breath, but her hand lingered even when he finally turned to her. He was keeping himself blank, so very perfectly unreadable, and she felt exposed having lost her second to do the same before he turned around.
His eyes were an interesting mix of grey and green, something she hadn't realized before now. He swallowed audibly, and she felt her face flush red when she realized she'd been staring at him, as if he had completely hypnotised her and she couldn't break free. Which may have been true, because where she would have turned away to hide the flush of colour to her face, she found that she couldn't. She'd started this, and now the tension in the air was so thick she felt like she couldn't move, couldn't breathe.
There wasn't any plan beyond this, she'd been running on pure emotion, it was pretty much all that was driving her for the past 24 hours. She had to do something, or she would loose this chance, whatever it was, and he would recoil back into himself. Making up her mind, she stopped trying to put that careful mask over her face and just looked at him, able to tear her cherry eyes away from his for just long enough to drift over the high sculpted cheekbones, and the casual, full line of his lips, unmoving despite everything he must have been thinking and feeling in that moment.
Her eyes seemed to glitter with an inner light full of thoughts that should never be applied to someone who had so much power over your life. He could just as easily toss her out if he knew what she was thinking. But she wanted him to. Her lips parted slowly to let out a shaking breath, blinking slow as if she was coming out of a trance. He was breathtaking, and she knew that because she had forgotten to breathe for a span of time. Her hand didn't move from him yet, instead sliding along the warm skin along his forearm, her eyes fluttering closed for a few seconds. When she opened them again, it seemed like the air had thinned enough for her to speak.
"Shinrai. I want you. I've wanted you since the day I met you in your office. I can't stand to see you turn away from me like that... I..." Her throat became tight again with the knowledge of everything she'd just said and done. What was she doing? What was he doing to her? And worse yet- why couldn't she keep control of herself?

If he was still before, he was absolutely frozen now. At her words surprise and something else-- could it be longing?-- flared through his eyes, but all emotion quickly shut down and disappeared as the stallion mentally reeled.
His first impulse-- very male-- was a happily shocked YES! After all, it wasn't as though his thoughts hadn't been a great deal like that from their initial meeting. Hello, the woman was hot.
There were other factors, however, other than just how physically attracted he was to her, only part of which being wot she thought of him. After his arm fell off, Rai couldn't imagine anyone wanting to look at him, much less have intimate relations. She hadn't known him beforehand; perhaps that was part of it. Perhaps not.
More than that, however, Sekhmet was his King; no, one of his Kings. He couldn't afford to forget that. The important question, however, was if this would be taking advantage of her even though she was the one coming on to him.
Blast, he over-thought everything. He gave a low, tortured groan and abruptly dropped his head on the table. Serafino was dead. And he was trying to decide if he could morally *#$& his King. He was jacked up.

He was as still as stone, but she'd caught that look, the one look that made her want to groan with everything she'd kept inside every time they'd been in a rome together, especially alone. She'd been so good, so very, unnaturally good, most especially considering her nature before entering the courts. It really had taken everything she'd had to restrain herself for this long, and now, it would kill her to go to bed alone tonight, knowing she'd seen that look.
But he was pulling back, he was getting lost in his thoughts, she could tell somehow, despite barely knowing him, she'd spent a lot of time studying him. This was an embarassing realization, how she was starting to know what ever twitch of muscle, what every look or motion meant he was thinking. Yet she was still lost here, because she'd never watched him in this situation with anyone else. This was all new, and she had to be so careful. It didn't seem he was going to speak, he was frozen, but he hadn't stopped her yet, hadn't sealed her fate with cruel words or final decisions.
When he let out a groan and dropped his head to the table, she sighed her own frustration and stood, taking a step forward until she was next to him, trying to lift his head to force him to look at her again. Screw it, she wanted contact, and if tha't what it took to keep his attention, she was not backing down.
"Stop thinking. Stop making excuses. God damn it Shinrai, I want you so bad it hurts to think about, and I'm pretty sure at least some part of you wants me too. Just give in, please, I don't think I can take another day seeing the way you looked at me, but not getting to have you..." She had leaned in, her body quivering with need as she breathed the words into his hair, her voice tight and uncontrolled with the emotion surgring through her. One hand clutched at his coat, begging him with her actions to do what her words had asked of him.
Standing this close to him had been a mistake, she felt fevered with heat, and couldn't seem to stop from grabbing and touching him openly without his consent, something she knew made him uncomfortable. Something he'd get used to if she made him get used to it. Normally she wasn't so forceful, but she'd never felt a need quite like the one which had taken control of her almost entirely.

He wanted to resist her, wanted to be good like he was supposed and he softly protested, "No, don't--" But it was too late, she tugged up on him, leaning forward to speak into his hair and he barely resisted a pair of opposing desires. The first was to bang his head on the table again, the second was to reach up and kiss her.
The heat of her desire washed over him and he could feel his own body beginning to respond. No, no! Moral high ground! Remember where they were and wot had happened and. . . he could already tell this was a lost battle. &$*%! He wasn't drunk enough to justify this. He wasn't. And he wasn't strong enough to resist.
The stallion slammed his right fist into the table before rising suddenly. After nearly cracking his bone hand once, Rai only hit things with his right hand now. He dropped his money on the table, more than enough to cover his tab and the untouched drinks still on the table.

His words might have fooled her if she couldn't feel the heat rising off his skin, couldn't see the speed in his pulse as his breathing accelerated. Though the knowledge that she was getting to him should have been satisfying, it just made things low in her body protest that they weren't somewhere more private and NOW. When he slammed his fist down, however, she jumped back, a bit startled. She watched him place the money down, and stepped back to let him stand as well. A few coins were removed from between her breasts (what? She figured she'd be getting too drunk to risk taking a purse along) and placed on the table next to the amount that Shinrai had left for his drinks.
She didn't have to say anything, the dark light in her eyes said enough. God oh god oh god why did they have to be in a bar right now? She was afraid to move back in and touch him, because if she touched him too much more, or if she dared to kiss him, she knew she wouldn't be able to stop herself. And there were just certain things she didn't want to do in public. Having sex with the man who had completely captivated her for the first time was just one of those things.
"I have a place in town we can go to." She said quietly at his side, her voice still uneven and breathy. It wasn't a far walk, and while normally her child, his nanny, and her sister would all be there, Artemis had plans with someone, and Tristian was staying at a friend's, giving the poor bat a night off from watching the boy. Which meant there would be nobody around, no hassle. Just perfect.
[Aaaand cut to mature board! :3]
