The light, barely-audible tapping merited the pair no response, but at the louder knock the door swung inwards and a large, fluffy, rotund feline stood there, beaming at them. "I was just about to send out for some tea, so your timing's perfect, my dear!" he exclaimed, waving them both in. "You would be Miss Kelasia, then! Your letter was quite a treat! It's always nice when people bother to warn you they're coming so you can have something prepared. Though it looks like I may have to change my plans, since you've brought a friend!"
His antechamber seemed to have cushions piled everywhere, the reason readily apparent when he threw himself down against one of them, tail curling up and around. "Can I get you anything, ladies, tea or cakes or sandwiches? The kitchens are fully stocked, so don't be shy now! And why don't you introduce your companion? You can't have too many over for lunch!"
As he spoke, he snapped his fingers and a small ball of blue light appeared, hovering next to them. He didn't even wait for their response before ordering them all lunch, assuming they would be hungry. If not... well, it was time for a meal anyway! "Let's have some tea, then, shall we? Perhaps some spiced orange with a little lemon sponge cake and a few finger sandwiches!" The ball of light hovered away quickly.

The skunk uneasily returned the smile and then they were nearly overwhelmed by the loud, almost over-bearing King of Diamonds who hustled them in and proceeded to overstep and bully his way through the whole conversation. She was impressed by the ball of light and its evident use as a sort of summoned waiter, but she couldn’t get in a word about either Mnemosyne or any type of food or drink preferences. Well, she wouldn’t have had a preference anyway, but it was strange to not even be given the option to not have one. She hesitated a long moment as she watched the feline, then she daintily sat down at the edge of a cushion herself.
Because the entirety of this monologue was supposedly aimed at her, the blue skunk tried to answer the question. Th-this i-is Mn-Mnemosyne,” she offered uneasily. ”It’s… a p-pleasure to m-meet you, Your Highness.”

Mnem settled onto one of the cushions, watching the large, round feline curiously. She had been in the company of extremely ebullient people before, and found that the best and easiest course of action was simply to let them speak. She was more than content to let the king order them food, as well. She was quite hungry, and her stomach seemed to be calling for sweets. Lemon sponge cake sounded divine. If she weren't careful she might be seized by a desire to bake when she got home, which was good news for Minh but not for Mnem's time.
At Kelasia's stuttering mention of her name, Mnemosyne smiled at the king and inclined her head in respectful greeting. He did not seem to take issue with the fact that she had arrived unannounced (except for one side remark that was lost quickly to the flurry of other sentences), which was lovely. She doubted the cheerful cat took issue with much of anything. Still, best to show all proper deference to rank.
"Your Highness," she said. "How delightful to make your acquaintance."

Vestra fiddled with a small table between their cushions, adjusting it for when the food eventually arrived, and smiled at the pair of them once he had finished. "Mnemosyne, a lovely name! Also a Ten, as an interesting coincidence. Or perhaps not."
He sat up a little straighter and pulled an object from next to his seat. It looked like a small furry ball, or perhaps cylinder. What it was, they wouldn't be able to tell quite yet, as he held it in his hands and fiddled with it. "You being here for your Jack's rank, Kelasia, I can't help but wondering if your friend is likewise interested and that's why she accompanied you? Whether you choose the path of the Courts or continue to pursue your own hobbies and interests without a care for politics, a higher rank is something that many people crave! What do you say, my dear, are you interested in sharing a task with your friend? Or would you rather 'go it alone', as it were?"
Before either of them could answer, the blue ball returned to the room, carefully balancing a tray with a teapot, cups, and an odd assortment of plates piled high with sandwiches and moist-looking lemon cakes. "Ah, lunch! Hopefully you'll forgive the rapid delivery, but your arrival coincided quite nicely with the midday meal and I couldn't do to pass it up without ordering enough for guests as well." He grinned and winked, snagging a sandwich and cake plate before resettling into a comfortable sprawl.

While Kelasia had heard rumours about the potentially private nature of a Jack quest, the skunk was also well aware that the King hadn’t even heard her tentative knock and that she would be easily bowled over by the large and… loud man. Her chances of succeeding through her quest alone were already fairly slim, but she was determined to do it! If that meant that Mnemosyne found out some things about her that she didn’t necessarily want the other woman to know, well, it was worth it if it meant she got to be by Theofilus’ side. That was worth any price.
”If Mnemosyne is agreeable to the idea,” the Sorgaire Range resident said softly. ”Then I have no issues with her accompaniment.” She very well might rejoice at not having to push through this ordeal by herself. She looked towards the other woman questioningly, trying to keep her underlying desperation from showing.

Kelasia's glance managed to stir the familiar brew of affection and pity that Mnem often dealt with in the skunk's presence, and if she weren't so keen on the girl she might have felt a twinge of annoyance at having such odd feelings aroused. Kel was effectively the first person that Mnem had actually met upon arriving in Capital City, and that appeared to stick with her. There was really no helping it, it seemed. Mnem just hoped this wasn't a symptom of some larger personality ailment.
She helped herself to some tea and the lemon cake, which looked every bit as delicious as she had anticipated. This was proceeding in quite a spectacularly easy manner. Of course, there was still the matter of the task and what exactly it was, but the fact that she was accepted so easily into the mission seemed to bode well.
"I would very much enjoy partaking in this endeavor," she confirmed.

Getting one of the small sandwiches down in two bites, the feline freed up a hand to reach and pour himself a cup of steaming spiced tea. The cake would wait until he had a few sips, which he took while waiting for the skunk and canine to come to an agreement on the subject. He did so love it when things worked out neatly. Take care of two friends' Jack quests in one go, see if they were interested in Court positions, then head to a meeting with his entertaining young apprentice. The afternoon looked to be going quite well.
"Very well then, ladies, this can be a group endeavor! What fun. I'll need you to focus on the table in front of you, then, as I set up a scenario."
He set his cup and plate to the side for safe-keeping and focused on the food in front of them. One small sandwich wedge rose into the air of its own accord, obviously controlled by the feline. "When you look at this delicious salami concoction, I want you to imagine it as a Jack of Diamonds, what you're looking to be. Let's say it's you, yourself. Here, we'll get another one up there for you, Miss Mnemosyne." An egg and tomato wedge rose into the air to join the first.
"If I were to tell you that two other sandwiches, two rival sandwiches, newly risen Jacks, were also looking to rise in the exact same manner as the two of you, and that only two of you would be successful in your quest for perhaps a year's time... tell me, what are your initial reactions to this scenario?" Two tuna sandwiches floated up to 'face off' against the first, the whole effect rather comical. The King looked to be working hard to keep a smile off of his face, whiskers twitching with the effort.

Wot was her initial reaction to sandwiches hovering in thin air? Kelasia couldn’t help sending a brief, baffled glance towards the King as she tried to keep her wonder about his sanity from showing on her face. She wasn’t entirely certain she’d pulled it off, but hopefully the other man would write it off as her thinking about the… ahem, ‘scenario.’ Actually, after her initial confusion, the full import of the King Vestra’s words sunk in. Her ears went back as determination darkened her face. She couldn’t wait a year to attain Jack; Theofilus needed her –now-.
When she spoke, her voice held a steadiness and fortitude that had no previous evidence in her demeanour, including her times with Mnem and Minh. ”I will do wotever I have to in order to attain Jack this year.” If it was based on a fight, she might have a problem even though she had read a few books on the subject of weapon styles and martial arts. Her pale blue eyes went to the feline as she held her head high. ”Just tell me wot I must do, Your Highness.”

Mnem regarded Kelasia with curiously, having never heard her speak with quite so much conviction. A spine, Mnem decided, suited her well. She wondered what exactly was prompting someone like Kel to attain such a rank; the skunk she remembers was not nearly so ambitious.
But back to the matter at hand. She had never seen sandwich wedges used in practical demonstration before, but there was a first time for everything, and she had seen stranger things. The feline was one of the more odd people she had ever come across, and she had seen some real screwballs. She stared at the delicate lunch food intently. She did not have a year to dally. She had people to see, things to accomplish, and if need be she would lay waste to the competition. Probably best not to respond so viciously, however.
"I suspect," she said, calmly and directly, "that I would feel quite a powerful determination to succeed, and act accordingly."
