Severus kept his eyes on the man in front of him, not daring to look elsewhere for fear that the man might try to take advantage of the fact that he wasn't paying attention to him. He gave a sideglance to the lump of deerlike flesh that was his mother, in a heap, breathing and looking terrible. He didn't need to look to deeply into it, she was badly hurt, and thats all he needed to see to raise his temper near breaking point. Instead of showing it to much like a moment before, he had reached a new level of anger...and icy anger filled with purpose. His face was no longer contorted with the emotion, only his eyes narrowed, otherwise his face was placid, though there was nothing peaceful radiating off of him.
His anger was such that he could not find the words to describe the mans insolence. Like he had to EXPLAIN what he was going to do to this man?! He wasn't going to play games. "You will do no such thing. I will take her and leave and you will NOT put up a fight, or you WILL face the consequences." he said, keys clinking as his mouth moved. That was as simple as it was for Severus. Besides...if his mother died, what was the point of anything? He cared for little else in this world, and maybe he wanted respect...and maybe he wanted glory, but what was the point when there would be no one you cared about to celebrate your triumph? He might have been a child, and he might have been weak, but he knew he wanted to get his mother out of here and to a doctor, and with that goal, he would do anything to accomplish it. Besides, had not Bernard promised him he wouldn't be hurt? But maybe this wasn't the quest...maybe he had stumbled onto something that he was not ment to stumble upon?
He walked toward his mother, his eyes on the man as he passed him.

The man's black eyes widened slightly, as though he were mildly impressed.
"Is that so? I wonder what you would do if I disagreed with you...boy."
He stalked away from the small mix and circled him, his feet making no sound as he passed...he had no smell.
He tilted his head to the side suddenly, as though he were being called. Eyes widening as his brows knitted, he looked unnerved.
"What? I don't believe..."
-----------------------------------------------------------
"This has to stop now! I know you, if I let this go any further then you'll-"
Bernard stopped moving and hissed softly in pain as sharp nails dug into his fingers.
"Or I'll what? You said you wanted to test the boy...I'm simply letting him see what happens when you-"
The King of Hearts whipped around, meaning to catch the man behind him in the face...anything to get him to stop tormenting the new Jack. He had proven himself to have a soul, a scruffy one but who could blame him?
"When you destroy what it is I was trying to find!Pull that man out of there at once! I'll go and see to-"
His hand grasped air. Bernard blinked in surprise for a moment before grinding his teeth in anger.
The other man was gone.
"Damn you...see if I ever ask for your assistance again..."
"You will..."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The man before Severus snapped his face up toward the ceiling.
"Bastard! You promised me that I co-"
He froze, as though struck by an unseen force, his eyes rolling down slowly to gaze at Severus, flat, black, and dead looking.
"Another time, then..." He whispered, before vanishing.
the entire dark hallway vanished, leaving Severus alone, with his nose pressed to the stone wall...alone...
The smell of blood lingering on the air.

Severus tenced, fully expecting the male not to comply as he passed him and headed towards his mother. He saw the look on the mans face and nearly smirked with pleasure. 'Didn't think you'd see the day, I'm sure.' he said to himself, and it was probably true. He couldn't tell much of the human before him, but it didn't take a rocket scientist corvistownian to see that he was powerful, and anyone would be suprised to see such a small child speak to them in such a way. But if anything was made clear today, it was that Severus was not a normal child. Maybe wasn't even a child at all, except in stature and age.
He watched as the much larger human began to circle him, and he prepared himself mentally. Obviously the man wasn't going to let him just come in and take his mother. He looked up at the man, his eyes holding all their condecending nature though also with a hint of determination. He was going to get his mom home...or die trying.
Suddenly the man seemed distracted, Severus took this moment to step closer to his mother to check up on her, and get out of the circle that the man had been forming around him. But the man no longer advanced, actually...he disappeared...with what seemed to be a parting challange. "Another time, indeed." he said to himself as the room around him vanished. He turned to look at his mother and ran his face straight into a stone wall. He grunted in his unexpected pain.
He looked around. His mother seemed to be gone...but blood could still be smelled. Where was she...? Was she ok? Was this just old blood? Had this been his test? What just happened? "Ophelia..." he called out in a slightly unsure voice...Was she around?

Bernard glowered at the empty space behind him, wishing he hadn't trusted....where he normally wouldn't...so many issues of trust lately...it was beginning to drive him mad.
He stood somewhat shakily and began to head down the stirs, not bothering to mask his footsteps. He caught the question that the mix threw out before he began his descent, causing him to feel a slight pang of regret for what he had force the boy to see. It had been necessary, of course, in order to place the boy Bernard had to know whether anything mattered to him aside from power. But showing him that...
He rounded the stairs' curve and saw the boy, standing near the solid wall, looking perplexed, a set of keys dangling from his mouth. Bernard smiled and applauded politely.
"Well done, Severus. You handled the test as was anticipated, sorry to cut it short, but my comrade was showing signs of wishing to push the limits... In any case, if you would please follow me, I'll take you to your new quarters."
He turned and began the climb back up the stairs when he halted, suddenly.
"Oh, I nearly forgot." The King of Hearts turned back and knelt down in front of the mixed breed, laying his hand over top of the scarlet ten on the boy's chest. A slight tingling sensation, like small electric pulses passed quickly. When Bernard pulled his hand away a bright red Jack's symbol almost seemed to glow in its place.
"Your mother was never here, it was simply part of the test, never fear. Now, if you will please accompany me...your Excellence..."

Severus' head turned at the quiet applaud, still a bit confused, but finally getting his bearings. He wanted to say that he didn't care that the quest had been cut short...but, he wasn't sure that was completely true. Even if his enigmatic friend wanted to push the limits, he was ready to push back. Besides...where was Ophelia? Was that all part of the illusion? He looked around a bit, his mind wandering back to the strange human he saw. So that was Bernards friend? What strange company the heart took...though there was alot about the heart court that seemed slightly shady...from all the things he had heard, and surely now would witness now that he was a member of the court himself.
He was about to follow the King, when he kneeled before him and placed a hand over his breast, where a shiny new red 'J' played across his tanned chest as the man took away his hand. He looked down at it, barely believing it was there for a second, believing very strongly that it was just another illusion. Had he really done it? Was he really only a few steps away from his goal? They were large steps to be sure...but at least he was one step closer. He was angered only for a moment that Bernard would play with him in such a way as to create an illusion of his mother so badly hurt. He cursed silently, unhappy that he had shown any sign of weakness...unknowning that this is probably what had him pass in the first place. It all seemed to flutter away with the word "Excellence". Not even an adult...and he was already gaining the title "Excellence". This made him very happy indeed.

((OOC: You can take the closing post points, Bernard has no use for them XD))
Bernard led the young Jack up three floors to a more open and well used corridor. They passed quite a few numbered doors, finally stopping in front of the one marked 119.
"This room will be yours until you either die, or refute your Court membership. Good to have you with us, Severus."
He smiled wryly at the boy, as he pushed open the door and then turned to hand him a thin, golden key on a small chain. He placed it around the mixed breed's neck.
"This key doubles as your room key and your right to position in this Court, wear it well. I'll expect you in my office first thing tomorrow morning to go over your duties. See you at dinner, your Excellency."
With that, the King exited, turning quickly and trotting off down the stairs.
The room was well furnished, a cherry wood desk, with a chair made for Animal and Bipedal forms to sit in. A small mechanical device that one could attach to hooves and wing tips situated on the corner with a pen in its holder.
A large window overlooked, not the gardens, but the front walkway to the palace. in the back was a small door, opening onto a thin hallway with a bathroom and small bedroom. Sparsely furnished but with a large plush bed.
All made and waiting for him.
