Femi watched her pale daughter squirm in her father's arms and snorted. "Yes, that's certainly the truth. My mother says that she reminds her a lot of my aunt when she was younger. Apparently she was always into things whenever my grandparents turned their back. If she was still alive, I'm sure she would be entertained by our menagerie." Wolf, squirrel... even a bit of bat, and fairy wings! Their children were anything but ordinary.
She popped another bit of food in Thyme's muzzle, which was promptly devoured, and pulled Sage into her lap so that she could sit the young biped up. Anything else and the food ended up on her pretty fur, which always made both her and Femi less than pleased. While the mix was chewing, she took a moment to fiddle with her mane. It was going to grow out so pretty. She could hardly believe that one of their children had been lucky enough to inherit a mane, much less two. Hopefully Thyme and Sage would both consent to being her little dolls as they got older, and even if they didn't, they wouldn't have a choice while they were young. She already had clothes planned for them.

Rosemary wiggled in her father's arms for a few more minutes until he set her down. He paused to prevent the girl from chewing on her brother's foot. "What exactly happened to your aunt, if you don't mind me asking?"
Hopefully Rosemary wasn't going to get into anything dangerous. It was a good thing she didn't have hands otherwise she would get herself into a lot of things, he was sure.
He picked up Parsley to give him a bit of food. The little fairy squirrel made no protests. At least he was well behaved. He kept an eye on Rosemary as he fed the little fairy squirrel. They were all going to be quite the handful when they were older. He briefly wondered what Femi was going to think if any of them wanted to leave the Wood. He couldn't imagine a Corvistowneian and a Highlander being widely accepted... well he would worry about that when they were older.

Femi fiddled with one of Sage's little feet before she popped in another bit of food. Bipeds squirmed in such a different way than quadrupeds, a fact she'd only begun to appreciate after having to deal with such different children.
"Oh, well... Aunt Felli died when I was nine. An Outsider got to her, you see." The expression on her face was somewhat pained. "Mother was the highest ranked member of her family. Her sister was only a Seven, and she didn't have much strength to speak of. She and my grandmother were both more, ah... 'delicate', kind of like I was when I was younger. She was being silly and walking back home from visiting us by herself. She lived closer to the border of the Wood. And, um, well... we're still not quite sure what region he was, but the people chasing them said he had very pale fur with splashes of color, so he might have been a Highlander or a Selkie or even an Esterberry. We don't know. He took her away and we haven't seen her since, so we can only assume that she's dead. Mother still misses her... so do I. She was really, really nice."

Kazifel stared blankly for a few minutes out of shock. He hadn't expected a story like that. "That's awful, why on earth would some kidnap her?" He was more than shocked about something like that. He could never comprehend why you would want to kidnap a someone... what use could another person be unless they were a willing participate in your plans.
He shook his head and tickled Parsley under the chin. It wasn't time to think about how horrible people were. He was taking care of his family and he just had to focus on feeding the kids without losing a finger or anything like that. The wolf refrained from sighing. There was no point in being depressed over something he couldn't change, however horrible it was.
"This may seem completely random Femi, but what would you do if our children left the Wood when they got older?"

"Oh, well... Aunt Felli was really pretty. Uncle was devastated..." Femi grimaced and tugged on one of Sage's paws before putting her down to pick up Thyme and play with her mane. Her hand stopped after Kazifel asked his question.
"Left? The Wood? Why would they possibly want to do that?" She looked at him as if he had two heads and perhaps a third eye. "Three of them are pure Tulgey and should have no problems here, and Thyme and Parsley... well, people in the village know they're mine and they'll be used enough to them by the time they grow up that there shouldn't be any problems for them either, so long as they don't go too far away from here. So why on earth would they ever leave?"
The unspoken sentiment 'It's nasty out there!' hung loudly unspoken in the air, her expression making it plain. She would never want her children subjected to the horrors of life outside the Wood, which was ironic when reversed.

"Oh... just a thought," Kazifel said quietly as he looked down at the Parsley. He highly doubted that a boy like this would want to stay in the Wood for the rest of his life and Aunt Josephine would see to Thyme having proper training as a Highlander. It was going to be a nightmare when those days came. Thankfully they were a long way off. He wouldn't really have to worry about it until the day came. It was going to come though.
"Stop that Rosemary," he muttered as the wolf squirrel tried to chew on her brother's wing. This one was going to be a handful for the rest of their lives and then some.
"Oh, when exactly do you want to go shopping for the rest of the furniture? I know it depends on when you're parents are going to take the kids, but I thought I'd ask." He watched as Rosemary proceeded to try and go after his tail. If this girl wasn't going to get into trouble he would be surprised.

Oh yes, shopping for the furniture! Femi visibly brightened at the thought. It would be so much fun because Kazifel had his money now and they could get what they needed for the house. Granted, they might have to go a few villages over to find everything that they needed, whether they wanted pre-made pieces or whether they needed to speak with artisans. The Wood's poor system of transportation within its depths ensured much tinier communities... along with the fact that it just wasn't safe to build larger towns. It had been tried long before with disastrous results.
"Well, I think it's probably been long enough since we've had the kids back that we might be able to ask them to watch everyone for four or five days come next weekend. Mother should be back from that short trip I mentioned earlier, the one where she needed to see the colleague with the funny lisp, and Daddy's always up for playing with the babies."

"Well then, that doesn't sound all that bad," Kazifel said with a slight grin. "Hopefully Rosemary won't give them too much trouble." He tickled the girl on the nose before standing up. He had been procrastinating on cleaning the dishes, among other things. He should probably get going and work on all of that stuff before he had to fix dinner.
Kissing Femi on the cheek he smiled. "I need to do some cleaning before dinner. I'll come up stairs with the food. Don't forget to eat yourself." He reminded before exiting the room.
It took him a while to complete all his house hold chores. By the time he glanced at the clock it was time to fix dinner. After a little bit of preparation he decided that he would go with something easy for dinner. That way he wouldn't have to worry about a surplus of dishes stacking up later.

"Oh, Daddy just thinks she's fun," Femi said with a small giggle, pulling the Tulgey girl close to her and tugging on her tail. "Of course, he can always give her back..."
She loved the fact that Kazifel was so willing to do things around the house. Granted, she helped sometimes, but it really freed her up to make sure their children weren't inadvertently killing one another in their infancy. They were such a handful, but at least there was enough space for them to play now when they got a little bit older. The small house she'd lived in contentedly by herself just wouldn't work for so many once they started running around.
By the time he brought dinner up, Alphonse had begun to stir from his daytime sleep and had squirmed out from beneath his blanket to join the others playing on the floor. Well, playing and napping. Thyme had worn herself out and was currently unconscious next to her mother.

Kazifel grinned as he slipped into the room with food. "I hope the kids are treating you well." He said cheerily as he handed Femi one of the dishes. It was soup, but at least it was more than the stock that Femi used to eat. And of course it had meat, vegetables and a variety of other things with bread on the side.
"I haven't caught anything for Alphonse yet. Then again he might try to take care of that again." Kazifel said as he sat down besides Femi. He honestly didn't like it when Alphonse caught his own food. Dirty little rats and such just didn't seem appropriate for a child to have.
Then again he was new to this whole father thing. It was still a terribly weird concept. He never really expected to have a family or... a life for that matter. Thank the stars for Femi.
