Fino looked back to the pond as the snake approached, stroking the plush fur against his arms. The bander didn't even care that she could see the fish so temptingly close at the moment. She'd worn herself to the bone chasing her daughter around all day and terrorizing servants who had accidentally almost stepped on her. Such things were not tolerated by the bright red creature.
"I am as well as can be expected, current events taken into consideration," he replied to the snake's inquiry, eyes hooded. "And you? Have you been checking on them regularly as you mentioned an interest in?"
He listened to the brief assessment, eyebrows turning down slightly as is eyes swept the pond. It was much more difficult to see some of them in the gloom and darkness unless the moon hit the water just right and didn't reflect back off of it like a mirror. He couldn't see any particularly noticeable problems, though that certainly didn't mean they weren't there. "Which fish and how seriously?"

Upon coming closer, Viviane finally had noticed the red bandersnatch within the Queen's arms. He looked at it slightly, having mixed feelings about being so close to the creature. He knew the gang was seeking to gain Bandersnatches as attack banders to protect the gang from those that would try to hurt the whores and other such things, but that didn't mean that he exactly felt one hundred percent comfortible around them. He knew them to be extremely aggressive creatures. He was better suited to such animal companionship that came with the Koi in the Queen's pond.
He wasn't sure if he should prod the Queen about what was bothering him, especially since he also came to the queen with not so pleasent news about the fate of one of his fishes. Viviane made a point of coming often, but he had been unable to save that one fish, and he felt purely responcible for it. Even if he had not been the official protector of the fish, he had made a promise to the Queen. And how he had failed. "What events?" he asked softly, trying not to prod to very much. But the Queen did seem...upset...maybe if he offered to be an ear he would feel better about it?
But the question of the fish came once again, and Viviane could feel himself coiling around himself in his anxiety. "Well...I. It was...erm. Well." after a bit of uncomfortible stammering he gulped and continued with the story. "It's my fault your Majesty. The Platinum Ogon is dead." he hid his head in the coils that were quickly wrapping around him in his anxiety. "There had been a Villan Hawk trying to catch the fish, and I had come just in time to tell him off, only to turn around and realize a feline Torquehelmite had come up behind me without my knowledge. He ate it...." He peeked his head from out of his body, "I'm sorry. I tried to stop them..."

The serpent was an odd little creature, low in rank and so very obviously unsure of himself and his surroundings, but still unusually willing to ask difficult questions of someone who had intimidated far more prominent figures into complete and utter silence. He didn't feel the need to act condescending towards the Diamond, who had done nothing to rile him or invite the attitude and who certainly didn't pose a threat to him in any way.
Hearing about the fish, crimson eyes narrowed and he looked into the pond again. Someone had dared to treat his Court's fishpond as their own personal buffet?! If he ever saw behavior like that in action, their heads would be separated from their shoulders, flying or bound or otherwise.
"That is exceptionally unfortunate," he hissed, anger lacing his tone. Just another thing to make this an unpleasant day. "And does nothing for my mood. But I don't see what you have to apologize for, unless you directed them towards the pond and gave them leeway to harass my fish. You don't seem to be involved in the ordeal at all, except your attempts to intervene on my behalf."

Viviane didn't seem to care that the Queen had not answered his prior question. After all, it had been rather bold, and he was sure the Queen wasn't one to tell his feelings to just about anyone. Besides, he was far to preoccupied in being completely terrified in the Queen's mood swing, to truely care or think about it anyway. The moment the Queen's eyes had narrowed, his head tucked quickly between his anxiously moving coils. Surely the Queen was angry at him for not having been able to stop it. He just hoped that the bandersnatch wouldn't be unleashed upon him, for his inability to save them.
But although his words were angry, he didnt seem to be angry at him. This suprised Viviane quite a bit, and he brought his head back out of his coils. He wished his snake-like head was more expressive, but unfortunately...that was the problem with being a snake. Your face was very much perminately how it was, and there was very little you could do to appear sad or happy or angry unless you had a bipedal or human form. He did his best to wrinkle his eyebrows to express his concern and appologies. He shook his head, "I did no such thing. I tried to save them...but I couldn't. I'm sorry I was not more vigilant. I'm sorry I failed you." he said genuninely. As he really did feel he had failed in his promise to the Queen.

Fino was more than used to reading serpentine expressions thanks to his mother - and, much younger, his grandmother, as it had been utterly essential to gauge her moods from even that early age. He could see some hint of a contrite expression on Viviane's face and took it for what it was, since the snake had thus far shown himself to be a very open and emotional individual. He felt no need to look deeper, nor the inclination. The fact that someone would dare to poach at his pond was fact enough to make him seethe. On top of everything else, it was just one more stress and annoyance, something else to eat away at what little patience and tolerance he had.
"You were not formally hired in any capacity, and so your failure to stop the poachers holds no consequence so far as you are concerned. I don't suppose you informed someone of this transgression on royal grounds, did you?" He hadn't heard anything about it, so even if the snake had, word hadn't gotten back to him. Not that it would, necessarily. The gardeners may have tried to settle the matter themselves.
He sighed and set down the bander to wander around the pond, both of his hands going to settle uselessly by his temples and press. They did nothing, as they always did, absolutely nothing to assuage the throbbing pain of his head. What an awful day.

((I think it would probably be best to end this. I'm having a harder and harder time conjuring up Fino's extremely unhappy mindset during Pravus's pregnancy. That was an odd time for him and it's just not flowing so well anymore.))
