Compassion was exactly what she needed right now, even if she did not quite realize it herself. She leaned into the hug and buried her face into his shoulder. She could faintly smell him through her stuffy nasal passages and it comforted her even more. She sniffed a little and tried to compose herself so that she could answer his question.
Once her sobs had subsided, she sat back a little so that she could look at Ashwin and slowly shook her head no. “No…it did not die…not yet any way…I just left it there…in the cold…and the dark…I…I…”[/b] Tears started flowing again when she remembered the squealing she had heard from the monster that she had birthed in her rush to get away from the only place she had called home. “I left it and I ran, Ashwin…I could not even look at it…it looked just like him…I do not ever want to see that man again…I never thought that he would actually keep his word and find me after all of these years…never…But….Aeron…” [/b]She looked down at her son once again asleep. “When I saw him come out of the shell…I was expecting something similar…but I saw the colors of our region and…I never thought that one of them would be yours…not after I saw It…”[/b] She looked into his eyes, her own usually bright and joyful eyes seemed some how broken, void of the simple joy they once held. She slowly pulled her finger out of her son’s mouth and reached out to touch Ashwin’s face, hoping he would not pull away from her. “He looks just like you…”[/b] She whispered aloud not really realizing she had said the words until they had already escaped her beak.

Ashwin carefully kept his expression sympathetic, despite the slight note of horror that she'd just... left the child somewhere cold and dark to die. Maybe it wasn't really that bad, was just somewhere dark with someone else, but he didn't think so from how she described it. If it was the product of rape, though, as he now strongly suspected from her words, he didn't suppose he could blame her. What had gotten its hands on her? Golfam? Lowlands? Hisstor? Something else that might be described as automatically worthy of a certain degree of revulsion?
He squezzed her reassuringly, pet the feathers on her arm nearest to his hand. Her hand, thumb wet, startled him into stillness as it brushed his face.
That was getting far too emotional for what he was willing to deal with, especially accompanied by those whispered words. He held awkwardly still as she brushed her hands against his face, then patted her shoulder once more and carefully withdrew. "Let me just get that coffee, dear," he said in a soothing tone, in reality feeling rather edgy. Gods above, what a way to complicate a night. His movement into the kitchen this time was almost a retreat.

Maji may have been dense to many things but when Ashwin had stiffened at her touch she knew that she had some how upset him and placed and uncomfortable feeling between them. She instantly felt bad, it was never her intentions to make him feel uncomfortable, but another part of her told her that her touch was okay and that she just wanted to be held in his arms.
She nodded when he told her that he was going to fetch the warm drink. Her own emotions were confusing her and she did not know what to do. “I’m sorry…,”[/b] she muttered as he left to go towards the kitchen. She did not mean to make him shy away or have him treat her any different then he always had, but she knew…this time things were different, and some how she also knew that things would never be the same again.

Focusing for a moment on pouring the coffee and doctoring hers the way she preferred it - his own was black and strong - Ashwin mulled over what he could do. Giving her a bit of money for the trouble and booting her out was one option, but honestly, he couldn't quite bring himself to. Not with Maji, anyway. He doubted she'd last ten minutes on her own without a home. Of course, he also had no idea she'd been living in a cave for most of her life.
Really, she was too sweet to just toss on the curb and forget about. He needed to do something to help her. As distasteful as it seemed, that might involve letting her live in his home for a little while until she could find her own place and get a job. As far as he knew, she didn't have one. Whoever had been supporting her and tossed her out deserved a smack in the face.
He came back into the room and handed her a mug carefully, handle turned towards her. "Well," he said slowly, thinking as he spoke. "Normally, I would not do this. It doesn't really make me happy, thinking about it now, but I feel partly responsible for the pickle you've found yourself in. I can let you and the baby stay here for a little while, until you're able to go out and find yourself a job. The offer is not permanent, but hopefully it won't take you too long to save a little money if you aren't paying bills at first and move into an apartment of your own."

She reached out for the handle of the mug. The coffee smelled warm and inviting. She always loved the way it smelled and how it felt when she drank it. Always so warm and fluttering. She pulled it closer to her as he spoke and almost loosened her grip on it as she heard him speak. He was going to let her stay. It was more than she could have hoped for. She wanted to jump up and hug him but she could feel the tension still between them and she decided that it was not a good idea at the current time. She instead just stared into her cup “Thank you Ashwin…I’ll do my best…”[/b] was all she could currently murmur.
“Do not blame yourself for this Ashwin…”[/b] She wanted to say more but she held back. She wanted to say that Aeron was the most precious thing any one had ever given her. That she cared about Ashwin so much…but she held back…she did not want to push her luck in light of all that was going on. She just smiled and drank her coffee in silence as she looked down at her sleeping child.

The pine martin sighed, warming his hands on his coffee mug, and stared down at the child cuddled into her lap. For a baby, it really was a cute little thing, with an awfully attractive shade of slate-periwinkle to mix with the blues and whites of their region. Such an unusual, attractive color... and he could see a small Eight peeking out on the child's breast, with Maji's own Club beside it. That rank would give the boy a small heads-up in the world, at least, comfortably in the middle-upper caste of society.
"Well. There's no sense throwing any blame anywhere at this point. What's done is done and the future is more important right now. I might be able to recommend a few places for you to start job-hunting after he grows up a bit and you can leave him with someone else during the day, a child-minder or friend or coworker, whoever you end up finding. Regardless, I'll need to find a place for the two of you to sleep. Which I suppose is going to be rather easy."
Yes, easy enough: they would both have to sleep in his room. There really wasn't that much space in the living area above the shop, enough room for a spacious living room that was completely given over to the banders, a kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom, and one small store-room crammed full of supplies. His bedroom was where they would all be staying. Dammit. But oh well, he'd already made up his mind. And, he consoled himself, it would only be temporary, until she could get her feet under her.
((Should we maybe end it here? *tilts head* I can see him just taking them in and settling them, then going to bed himself.))
