Well. I felt guilty not posting a proper response from Vio, and she slapped me pretty hard in the face.
I hope it's not awful. Just had to get it out.
Characters: Viola, many mentions of Lani, some other mentions of family, and Xiven plays Mommy.
Words: 1301
Viola was happy when she heard that her sister was going to have children. She know full well that her sister never planned on having children, but that didn't dampen her mood. Children where something that Viola had always been fond of--they were easier to understand than adults.
And then everything fell apart. Everything shattered in her tiny glass world.
When she heard the news that her sister had passed away she didn't know what to do. It had to be some sort of horrible mistake. It had to be a joke. Anything but the truth. But it was true. Her sister had died in horrible pain because of the monstrous children she had given birth to.
Viola did the only thing she knew how to do, she cried. Alone, in the dark of her room. There was no sister to comfort her like when they were little, there was no Daddy to go to since he was in Avington. She couldn't go to anyone else, that would just be a bother. Hell, her family sometimes forgot she existed. It was her grief and her sister.
She couldn't bring herself to leave her room . She simply sat in silence and cried into her pillow for a day and a half. Everything and everyone was ignored. They didn't matter, none of them.
When her tears had dried up she finally slithered out of her room. She did her best to avoid everyone remotely related to her family. How could she face anyone right now?
Of course, she stopped when she accidentally ran straight into someone's leg.
There was a slight yelp as the woman hopped back on one leg. "Viola?" asked the confused voice.
She didn't want to look up, but she did. Blood shot eyes took in the image of a cat. Someone she had met during her childhood and really thought of as a stranger. She was a nice person though, from what she could remember, and she was now a titled Queen. "I'm sorry Your Majesty...." she said out of common courtesy. Maybe she should have stayed locked in her room.
Xiven's reaction wasn't what she expected. The cat shifted to her animal for and wore a frown, ears pulled back in worry. "Would you like to come to my office and have some tea?"
Viola stared at the cat for a lone moment. Tension seeped into the air as the snaked debated rejecting the offer. Why on earth would Xiven care about her sister's death? Didn't Lani mock her all the time? And it wasn't like she did anything to stop her sister. But... maybe Xiven would be someone to talk to? The snake deer muttered, "That would be great, I guess."
Silence filled the halls that they traveled down. Viola watched the woman's tail swish as she walked, a knot in the pit of her stomach. She felt like crying again, but she couldn't in front of someone like this. When they entered her office there was still nothing but silence between the women. Silverware clinking and the sound of tea were the only things that broke the uncomfortable air. Xiven had shifted to her biped for so she could quickly place the tea in front of the hybrid along with some scones.
She shifted back to her animal form though. Viola watched her silently. Not sure what to think. Was she going to break the silence? The snake deer had no idea why a titled Queen would be bothering with this. She had better things to do that comfort a grieving little girl who had lost her only real sister and only real friend.
"What am I supposed to do?" Viola whimpered as tears trailed down her cheeks. "Why did she have to die? Why couldn't I have been the one to disappear instead of her? How the hell am I supposed to move on? I just want my sister back...I don't want to raise her children."
The hybrid's chin hit the desk with a thud. She watched the feline through teary eyes. She didn't care about this at all....
Xiven licked the girl on the tip of the nose. In her animal for she was standing on her desk, a frown on her face as she looked at the snake hybrid. "My Mom says that strangers are sometimes the best people to talk to when you're upset. Words can't fix any of this, but you can cry on me if you want. I'll do anything possible to help you."
Viola stared and sniffed at the feline. Was this really happening or was it just some horrible hallucination? Viola really didn't have any friends... it was hard to make friends when you were scared of people deep down inside. But this "stranger" was saying words like this. Xiven couldn't possibly understand what she was going through. It was impossible.
"Then c-c-can I have a hug?" Viola asked with a small whimper.
The feline blinked a few extra times before hopping off the desk and shifting forms once again. Without hesitation she gave the snake deer a hug.
"What am I supposed to do Miss Xiven? I'm inept, a cry baby, and utterly useless. I can't even figure out how to get my biped form and... and all I want to do is have one last conversation with my sister. She's done so much for me and I didn't do much of anything for her. And now she's gone. I know I have to be a responsible adult, get over it, and raise her children like a good sister would but.... but I don't know if I can. I just... I just... why did God do this to her? Why did he make her suffer so much pain? Why did he kill her?"
Viola knew there was no answer to all of her questions. She just needed to say all of them out loud. She continued to cry on the woman's shoulder. Crying. Crying. That's all she ever did, wasn't it? How many times had Lani made fun of her for it when they were kids? She ever cried when they fought over stupid trivial bullshit.
And now she was crying over something real.
She choked on her tears, and started coughing. Xiven patting her on the spine and trying to comfort her.
"I need to stop crying. I need to... I need to." She repeated to herself as she tried to make herself stop. She didn't expect it to work. Big crybaby that she was... she never had been good at keeping her emotions stuffed away.
"It's all right to cry."
"It's not! It's not at all! Lani wouldn't want me to be an idiot like this! She always made fun of me for being so weak!" She yelled as she looked up at the cat with swollen eyes. It was getting harder and harder to see, and her face was hurting more than it ever had before. How was crying this much useful?
She squeaked with surprise when Xiven tightened her grip suddenly and gave her a kiss on the tip of her nose. "Are you living for the dead or are you living for yourself? If you want to cry you should cry, if you want to stop you should stop. But it should be for you. What anyone else thinks isn't your concern is it? If you want to cry for the sister that you loved dearly, shouldn't you be able to?"
"But...." Viola said as she sniffed again.
She let out a long sigh, propping her chin on the feline's chest taking comfort from the warmth radiating from her chest. "I-I don't get it but... I guess I figure things out right?"
No. She wouldn't. That's just how things worked.
Lani. God. Why did Lani have to die? She would never forgive the man who did this to her sister. One day she would find him. One day she would stop crying and make him pay.
I hope it's not awful. Just had to get it out.
