Author: Nathalia
Characters: Finistris, Varestes: mentions of Bernard, Donnie, Mia, and Seth.
Setting: Court of Spades
Notes: Well, I did say that the necklace exploding made it lose its previous powers, they were all released and leaked out during the time he was unconscious...perfect. Told you something might get out! Mwahahaha! Woo!
It was the explosion that tugged his attention back to the Court. His other half may not like the fact, or want to hear it, but they were tied indefinitely to the Court of Spades. For better or worse. He pulled at the bind to his other half’s mind, knowing it caused the other King rather horrible mental anguish when he did so. It was no picnic for him either, but he needed to know what was going on, perhaps his beloved had returned to the Courts and was putting all involved through hell? Ever since that awful Lysaras had finally gone down, he had been desperate for an image, even if it was just a poor shot, of the new Queen’s face. Varestes had been quick to block out everything to do with the battle he had run from, leaving Finistris with the knowledge, but not the images.
He had been feeling restless lately. His own lover had been in and out of touch, and there had been no news of his son for quite awhile, it was enough to make him go mad. The Rat was far from the Spades Court now, the distance making it harder for Finistris to reach out for him and spend his nights with his Lowlander.
He swept back his long blue hair and searched for an opening, a picture, mirror, anything that would show him what had caused the loud bang that had drawn him back. He sneered at the idea of his other half; the explosion had barely caused him to twitch as he stared in at his Highland love, watching him play with one of his new children.
Hell on earth, what a delightful discovery that had been! To see that his other half’s perfect Highlander had been subjected to accidental children with a Glacier buffoon, it couldn’t get much more perfect than that. He had sat, sympathetic face in place, and listened to Varestes’s woes for over three hours. Something he rarely did, but they were able to commiserate every once in awhile...he just didn’t have to be genuine about it like the other King. The descriptions about why each and every child was a hideous blemish, aside from the pure Highland boy had been hysterical; it had been difficult to hold the laughter in.
”I should have been the one bearing his children! Me! They would have been beautiful! Every one of them, I swear it. Highland and the Glacier, can you believe?! It’s practically blasphemous, the Queen...that little Queen should have been MINE, damn it all! I would have produced just as lovely and more! That little girl, she’ll grow to be a terror, probably a bat like her hideous monstrosity of a mother, all bulky and hairy. She’ll smell of sweat and abuse my poor love! Glacier dwellers! I’ve heard of them, they have no care for anything, look at that sloth of a Bat! Treacherous and unfaithful as they come, ugly to boot, she’ll break his poor heart even further, Finistris! And that one boy, ugh, did you see his face? His beak, marred by that horrible under-slung jaw, gods I could kill that Bat! The other one just looks like a scrawny version of that evil beast! I could kill him, I want to kill him!”
”Then do it.”
”What?”
”Kill him, it shouldn’t be too hard for you, you know the palace of Hearts better than he does. Kill him and be done with it. Kill the children too, while you’re at it, spare your poor love the heartache. Maybe he’ll come around to you if you murder even more of his tribe, Varestes.”
”Shut up! Burn in that afterlife your precious Lowlander’s call Hell!”
What a tantalizing conversation, he hoped to have another row like that one soon. He would have to work harder to provoke the other King as they weren’t on speaking terms at the moment...but messages scrawled in blood had always gotten his attention. Especially crude suggestions regarding his beloved Highlander.
”Ah!” A flash of light, bright enough to cut through the reflective surface of a stainless steel table and cause the King a sudden stabbing pain. He backed up, clawing at his eyes for a few seconds until the pain died away. ”Oho, is this the scene I’ve been searching for?”
Gingerly, he moved toward the steel surface, reaching out to lay his long fingers against the sides so that he could watch more closely out of it. He stopped at once.
That fur...
He recognized it’s description.
This was the little whelp that his son had considered a friend so long ago. Mia? Was it?
He eagerly pressed his fingers forward, and gave a start when they sank right through the surface. He jumped backward, biting back the cry of shock as he stared at his hands. What...
Carefully moving to the side of the table furthest from the unconscious Ferret, he slid his hand out experimentally. It was dark out there, darker than here in the mindspace...out there.
Out there.
A voice startled him out of his reverie.
”He-hello? Mia? Are you still in here? Is anyone in here?”
Cautiously, he activated his ability to see in the dark, and scanned the room, his vision was a bit bleary from the brightness of the previous flash, but it had been blocked from doing as much damage as it had on this woman by the mindscape. He observed her as best he could...wishing he could see in color in the dark. The “Q” on her chest made him wonder though...is that what a Wolverine looked like? He secretly hoped so, this seemed like the build of a woman he would have liked to see beating Lysaras to a pulp...if only his other half had stayed to watch...damn.
He waited a few more seconds to make certain the woman hadn’t seen anything, then activated an ability he’d been working on with his other half for quite some time. In complete silence, the fiendish smile on his face growing to what should have been impossible levels as he heaved himself out of the reflective surface of the table. He planted his feet on the floor and gave a soft hiss under his breath as he smelled the air around him, the heady scent of that woman, and the sickly unhealthy smell of the Ferret. Turning to the unconscious form, he hesitantly touched the Ferret’s throat. He bit down on his lip in an instant as an incredibly sharp pain stabbed through his body. He dropped to his knees quietly, body shuddering as he tried to identify the feeling he had gotten from the table’s surface in this pain.
And there it was...
He grinned again, his teeth making a slight squeak as they ground together tightly, and he stood slowly, careful not to alert the woman. Thank you, Mia... He thought, brushing his fingers against the Ferret’s head lightly. I’ll have to gift you a little something for this, won’t I? I’ll get back to you on that...
Turning, he passed the woman, staying as far from her as he could and going to the door, walked through it.
His walk, once out became hastened as light began to filter back in and he dropped his sight ability. Good thing that, the magic use was draining him. His legs moved quickly as he took in the sights around him as best he could.
He would probably never see them again.
He ignored the people around him and concentrated on the scents in the air, and the feeling of wind on his face. His heels clicked as he moved past a tall Corvistowneian in a white coat, ignoring the call thrown toward his back.
”I’m coming, my love. I’ll find you soon and fulfill that promise I made you. I’ll never be without you again. My love, my life...we’ll find our son and the path of murder can include me as well. We’ll start soon. My love, my one.”
”My Osias...”
