Trot watched his best friend while he closed his eyes and started to count. Were they going to play a game of hide and seek? He loved playing hide and seek. "Geesh, Zeus you do not have to yell. I can hear you just fine." He gave a pout, showing that the other canine had managed to hurt his feelings.
"Why do we need to find Obadiah? Fine, fine. I will go get him." He started off with his tail tucked between his legs. After he had gotten a short distance he turned around, ear perked up in question. "Where do you want me to bring him once I have found him?" He asked, tilting his head to the side, tongue lolling out again.
After Zeus had replied he gave a yip before heading off in a direction in search of their fellow Hellhound.

"TROT. If you don't go right now. . . I can't be held responsible for what I might do to you." His fingers had tightened even further around the hilt of his dagger, and he was within seconds of pulling the *#&$ thing out and plunging it straight through Trot's eye socket.
When the other man finally-- finally-- started on his way, Zeus just barely kept his voice even. "Other way, dumb rot."
Shin had finally stopped his obnoxious sound just to start cackling loudly and, amazingly enough, even more annoyingly. Zeus' massaged the bridge of his nose, wondering when the nightmare would finally end. He felt an obligation to the retarded Lowlander, but sometimes that guilt wore very, very thin. Who was to say that Trot's condition was even caused by that fight all those years ago? Maybe he really was just a retard.

It was a long, hot, unpleasant day, like it always was in their Promised Land, the Lowlands. Obadiah loved it. Any time he left to work or hunt or kill in the other, more pleasant regions, he got antsy. It was the bad weather and tough conditions that made them so tough and strong, and that was surely the sign that all other regions should bow to them, for they weren’t nearly so tough or strong. Look at the tubby Selkies. They looked like they were made of pudding, or something else soft. It didn’t have to be soft, for that matter. Obadiah would eat them either way. Still, warm beer was not acceptable. “Now, for the love of Sam’s Rot, why would you give me this? Why would I pay you to give me a glass full of something you urinated out into a glass?” “Obadiah, I really, REALLY don’t want any trouble.” That’s what the bar-tending bulldog was trying to say, but once Obadiah got started, it was hard to make oneself heard. “See, I don’t need your glass. I have one at home. It’s dirty. I killed my cousin with it. I called it Dave in his honor. Do you want to meet Dave?” “Listen, Obadiah-“ “Dave doesn’t like it when I urinate in him. I do every now and then to show him I’m still the boss, but he doesn’t like it. And I don’t think your glasses like it, either. Come ‘ere.” The bull dog sighed. Obadiah hadn’t thrown or broken anything yet, it looked like it wouldn’t be one of those days. “Now, why don’t you clean out Steve here real nice, and give me the beer I ordered instead of your pee.” “Now you know our cooler’s busted, Obadiah, and that’s the coldest beer I can-“ WHAM! Even without transforming his forearms, it never felt good to get decked by ole Obadiah. The bulldog flew back into the wall behind the bar, causing dust and plaster to sift down. “When you wake up I’ll take a whiskey, then.” He struck a match and lit his cigar, happily clamping it between his teeth. Such was the scene that had been set when Trot trip-skipped in.

Rushing through the small village he soon became distracted as he saw something out of the corner of his eye. Giving a growl he turned around quickly lashing out. Missing his target he set chase. After a few moments he held the tip of his tail in his jaws.
Trotting up to the pub. "Toothbrush, are you in here?" Trot called out in search of Obadiah as he poked his head through the doorway. Spotting their fellow canine he gave a happy yip.
"Are you making friends again?" He asked taking in the party that Obadiah had obviously just thrown. Slowly the made his way inside, walking over to where the canine sat he took a seat, being careful not to injure any of his paws. Finally making to Obadiah's side he too a seat.
"Why do you always have parties without me? Did it not occur that I would want to join for once? You are mean, Toothbrush" He whined for a moment.

Obadiah looked up at the door as he was helping himself to the bottle of whiskey from under the bar. “Friends? I don’t know. Are you guys my friends?” A nervous cacophony answered him. “I guess so. Trot, call my by my name, not by whatever you looked at one time and for whatever reason thought of me, okay? If you were on time, you could have come to the party, too. You were chasing your tail again, weren’t you?” In his experience, nine times out of ten that was the cause for Trot’s tardiness. Well, to be fair, his tail or shiny things.
“Now what do you want, Trot? And quit your whining before I give you something to whine about, and a new whine hole to do it with.” At least the kid could carry stuff, as Obadiah often had to remind himself. It would be time before too long to hide within the lands of the Infidels, gathering information, maybe doing a little damage. Obadiah had heard some rumors that didn’t sound too nice. They might have to do something about the rumors, depending on what they found out on this expedition.

"Whatever you say Toothpick" He replied in a confirmatory manner. Looking around he asked, "Ooh, nap time! Can they be my friends too? I caught it this time." He jumped from topic to topic easily, though he would forget anything he said if he was asked to repeat any of it. At his comment about catching his tail it was obvious that the Golden Retriever was proud of the accomplishment.
At Toothpick's threat he stopped whining. Toothpick scared him more then Zeus did, after all Toothpicks left splinters. He hated splinters. Instead he started to wag his tail violently side to side almost causing him to fall off of the chair.
"Zeus sent me on a mission! I am suppose to obtain the evil one and bring it back to him!" He declared suddenly looking at Toothpick expectantly. "Are you the evil one?" He asked.

Obadiah shook his head sadly. He’d tell the kid to close his eyes and then call him something, but then he’d probably just be called eyelids or something. And then he’d have to kill the kid. Best to just ignore things and move on for now.
“Yes, Trot, they can be your friends. You can skip and sing and laugh and play and get hit by me and bleed together. Doesn’t that sound like fun?”
Evil one? What on earth? Why would Zeus send him. . .no, the kid was just confused again. “Now, Trot, I want you to thing very carefully and remember. Are you sure that Zeus wanted you to get the evil one? Are you sure he didn’t want. . .ANYTHING else? Did you tell you go find someone? Someone that’s talking to you right now? Someone who thinks you should spend more time coloring and less time being exposed to society? I don’t suppose any of this is ringing any bells, is it?”

They sounded like they would be great fun! "Oh we are going to be good friends. You are going to be jealous!" He barked happily. He would just have to wait for all of them to wake up from their laziness to let them know.
At the Toothpick's words he tried to listen carefully. "He said for me to find . . . someone, yes, but his name was . . . his name was . . . Okras? No, no that was not it. Oakum! . . . wait, no that was not it either. Maybe it was Obadiah? . . . Heeey! Wait a minute, are you not an Obadiah? But why would he want you?" All of his confusion over the topic would be obvious.
Why would Zeus want Toothpick? That just did not make sense. Sometimes Zeus really did not make sense. And they complained about him! He gave a small shake of his head.

Obadiah wondered what Zeus often wondered, why was Trot still alive. The both often wondered it, and it was something they had in common. Neither knew it or would admit it, though. Not the part about wanting Trot dead, the part about having something in common.
“Well, Trot, let’s find out, shall we?” He fought an urge to give Trot a suggestion to, say, run into the door jam a few times. Stuff like that was funny, but with Trot’s ability to make things worse for people around him, it would only bring pain. And not funny pain, irritating pain, like an annoying presence giving you a headache. Worse than what he had now, at any rate.
Knowing better than to rely on Trot to take him back to where Zeus was waiting. He just left the bar and tried the usual places. Eventually he found the Doberman waiting, almost peaceful for once, most likely because Trot wasn’t around. Obadiah smiled. “Well hello, Zeus!”
