Rocky literally squealed when he saw the cake. He honestly couldn't help himself. He was never good with surprises. The raccoon did manage to find his voice, however. "Thank you so much Ataxia!" He gleed. That was the most coherent response he had ever given when he was this happy.
The raccoon made a rather happy sound and smiled. "Well, I was thinking ice cream would be a lot later, but with this cake I may have to be later than I anticipated. I could always buy a couple of pints and put them in my freezer. Might be interesting having an unofficial ice cream party. Maybe you could meet my friend Loreta?" Rocky's tail twitched. He hadn't spoken to her in a while. He had to send her the news somehow. If only he remembered her address. He honestly should have kept that stuff written down. Oh well, he'd have to look for that when he got home.
"Eee! Thank you so much! If there wasn't a table in the way I would hug you!" More like pounce and smother her, but sometimes Rocky didn't know the difference.

Ataxia's tail was a black and green blur behind her at this point. She knew it. No celebration was complete without cake. Sure, they had the attention of the entire cafe by that point, but that didn't matter. He was thrilled, she was happy, and there was cake. Life was more than good, especially with the chance of having an ice cream party and meeting a new friend.
"You're flying now! That's a huge accomplishment! If people get cake just surviving another year, why not get cake for learning how to fly? Oooh, and I'd love to go to an ice cream party! Sounds like so much fun!"
If there wasn't a table in the way I would hug you!
Well, that was easy enough to fix. Xia jumped down from the chair, padded over to Rocky's chair and sat up on her haunches.
"Then that silly table better get out of the way!"

The grin on Rocky's face was, well, special. Anyone who didn't know him would probably think him a tad insane, but Rocky could careless as he hugged Ataxia. Having a friend who could appreciate your dreams was better than anything else in the world. Even better than actually achieving those dreams. The raccoon would have cried if he hadn't remembered that he was out in public.
And apparently people were staring at him. More than usual that is. He was used to people sizing him up to see if he was approachable, but the looks they were giving him today were just flat out weird.
He slowly let go of Ataxia. Right, no point in squeezing her to death. "Thank you, Ataxia, really. I never thought I'd be able to make it... but I don't know. I think I wouldn't be as happy if I didn't have someone to share my accomplishment with. It really means a lot to me. Let's not forget about each other when you make it big?"

Ataxia, at that point, could really have cared less about how the other patrons of the restaurant were reacting to their hug. Staying completely ignorant of the awkward looks was the best line of action anyway. Tail wagging madly, she gave Rocky one last nuzzle before he let go of her.
"Are you kidding? I'd never forget you, Rocky! I'm thinking all that would take you out of my memory is a well-placed brick to the cranium, and that would be due mainly to brain damage and not so much you drifting from my mind...Anyway, we'll find ways to keep in touch and meet up should I successfully join the Courts. Even if I have to take off a few days to come down to Corvistowne. But these are worries that can wait for when I have that mark on my chest. For now, let's focus on flight, ice cream and cake!"

Rocky smiled. That was really all that he could do. He was still quite worried about being forgotten. How many people had been stepped on intentionally or otherwise by the people who ascended ranks? Rocky shouldn't have thought about things like that, but he did anyway. Worrying was one of the few things he did silently, and he always covered it with cheer.
Today he wasn't exactly covering it with cheer. He was actually quite cheery. "Thank you, so very much. I'm so happy I could almost burst into tears of joy." He muttered as he watched her walk back to her seat. If she heard him he wasn't sure. He wasn't sure if it mattered either. The raccoon's tail flopped happily as he cut a piece of the cake. His other food could wait, honestly.
He offered the second piece to Ataxia with a grin plastered on his face.

She trotted back to her seat and hopped up, tail waving like a metronome. As she settled herself down again, she had almost thought that Rocky had said something. An ear twitch or two later, she shrugged mentally. No matter. If it was important, he would repeat it, she was sure. Currently, she was just happy she hadn't asked the waitress to bring ice cream along with the cake. Best to save that treat for the party.
"Hope you don't mind vanilla cake! Chocolate doesn't settle too well with me, so...Thanks!"
Ataxia eyed the piece of cake that Rocky had placed in front of her. She nipped up a bite, desperately trying to avoid getting too much of the icing on her fur. Of course, this was nigh impossible and she ended up having to lick her muzzle clean with each bite. How embarrassing...

Rocky couldn't help but smile and snort. "You know Xia, you don't have to worry about being messy. It's not like I'm going to judge you because you have cake on your face."
He took a bite out of the cake. Vanilla, he really had no problem with it. Cake period was wonderful, and getting high off of chocolate was always a bad idea with Rocky. Hyper Rocky was just a disaster waiting to happen. He did not take well to large amounts of caffeine in concentrate. The raccoon had to be careful now, though. He wanted to be able to fly for a very long time, and he had to watch his diet.
And being fat in general just wasn't something he really wanted to do. As much as he loved junk food he was willing to eat vegetables for the rest of his life it it meant he could fly.
He wiggled happily as he savored the taste of the cake. Mmm. Victory really was sweet.

Xia lapped at a bit more of the icing that had reached around her muzzle, eventually having to take a paw at a bit that had somehow reached the upper side of her nose where her tongue couldn't reach.
"Yeah, but I don't want to look like a wreck. As much as I love vanilla icing, even a speck of it is so easy to spot. And I want to get to it before it dries on and becomes even more of a trouble. And it tastes good."
She licked the spot on her paw where she had transfered the bit of icing from the muzzle. Didn't want to waste a bit of it.
"That and if I'm going to be in with the Courts, I need to start acting a bit more polite. Though I have to say, eating has been the worst to try and get right. Without thumbs, it's absolutely impossible to eat proper."
She looked down at the cake as if it were a puzzle or an opponent she had to defeat. A tasty opponent, but nonetheless...

If Rocky had been drinking something it probably would have come out of his nose in sheer amusement. He wasn't, thankfully. "Well, for now you aren't in the courts, so you don't exactly have to worry about it when you're around me. Taking one step at a time is probably better than jumping ahead of yourself."
He grinned. "It's like the scientific method. If you skip a step, sometimes things don't turn out as well as they could have. Anyway, if you desperately want thumbs, I imagine you can eventually work for your biped form. Just don't do anything silly like I did and inject random chemicals into you before you try to attain your biped form that really isn't a biped form."
The raccoon took another few bites of his cake. Nothing could top this. Well, there was ice cream, but this was really good cake.
