So, it was Time, she decided. Probably it should have been time years ago, but she and Tosiek were busy having fun and Mama was squirreled away in the lab and Mom gave no indication of really remembering who Tosiek was exactly when she mentioned him and she wanted to give the information a little time to sink in (and in and in and in). But now they were in the neighborhood, and she knew that both her moms were home, and she decided it was Time. "So I think Mama and Mom are both at the house," she said, suddenly. "You wanted to really meet them, yeah? We should bother them." With any luck they would be doing exactly what Thalia expected them to be doing--Mama experimenting with bandersnatches, Mom complaining about what a wreck the house was--and not doing Things in random crawl spaces that involved a lot of weird zoo noises.

Tosiek turned to stare at Thalia for a long moment at this absolute random non-sequiter. Of course the girl didn't even pause as she walked and so the sparrow hybrid continued alongside her as well. Really, though, this was one of the least surprising things she'd thrown at him whilst they were on the move and yet still one of the most potentially stressful. Amazing how that could be. He knew better than to show fear around Mnem and Minh could be counted on to be rather oblivious to him as a rule, so he wondered to what purpose this visit might be. Nevertheless, he did want to try and become a little more 'permanent' of a fixture in Thalia's parents minds, especially since he had no intention of leaving the Queen's side. "Okay," he agreed, since the girl would likely drag them over there regardless of his preference, which was also fine.

Things were quiet as they neared the apartment complex, which was a pretty good sign. She looked a the facade with fondness. It took a building years of hard work and bizarre architectural additions to attain that level of perfect dilapidation; she only hope that, one day, she herself would have a home in that state of disrepair. Maybe she could secretly chip at the bricks during the night or something. She could hide a chisel in her hair. Or light a couple of strategic fires.
There was no one in the living room from what she could see; so she declined pounding on the door (which usually made her feel like some kind of mime anyway, pushing at invisible objects) in favor of blindly fiddling it open and pushing inside.
"Mom! Mama!" she called, hoping the sound would carry to its needed locations. "I'm home! I've brought Tosiek! Come say hello!"

i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa124/Gryphowizardgirl/dark3-1.png [/img] Minh had decided to clean. There was quite a bit to be said about organized chaos—she knew where everything was, thank you very much, and you shouldn’t be rummaging around for things, besides--but at some point it had all gotten out of control and her lab had become some sort of semi-sentient creature that threatened to consume life itself. Minh had already begun to hear strange whisperings, and she kept seeing shadows out of the corner of her eye. Of course, the spooks were probably just the feral banders that had taken up residence and started breeding—nasty little buggers, too, and good enough reason to clean and root out their hiding places before they got too much of a foothold—but it never hurt to be too careful. Now that she had decided to clean, though, she didn’t know where to start. It was all very perplexing—and daunting. And then she heard the distant bellow of her youngest spawn, and it was all the excuse she needed to scurry out of the lab and abandon thoughts of cleaning until later. Much later. “Tosiek? What’s a Tosiek?”

It was just as well that he was unaware of the young woman's thoughts; he wasn't necessarily used to living in dilapidated buildings and might not be entirely pleased with the idea that his roommate might be running down their building at night. Then again, whatever Thalia chose to do, he would likely go along with. How could he not, after all? Thalia was his world.
As they made their way indoors, Tosiek again reflected on the rather messy interior that seemed to be the only face they had to show to visitors. It was very daunting, actually. His ears twisted forward as Thalia called out for her mothers.
He was less than surprised, however, when Minh came wandering out with verification that she didn't recall the young man yet again. He sighed and hoped that perhaps this time he would actually stick in the Corvistowneian's memory. "It's nice to see you again, Minh," the sparrow said politely.

“You remember Tosiek, Mama,” Thalia prompted helpfully. “You’ve met him an awful lot. You and Mom both. Met him. A lot.”
Where was Mom, anyway? She was supposed to be home.
As if the reality bent itself to her desires, Thalia heard the hard footfall of boots on the steps, and looked up to see the colorful form of her other mother. Dirt-smeared and a little sweaty. She’d been working in her garden, probably.
“Minh, have you seen my—” She paused, saw Tosiek and Thalia, said “goddamnit,” and turned to go right back upstairs.
“Mom!” Thalia said, a little wounded. “Say hi to Tosiek.”
“What the hell’s a Tosiek? I have deadheads to trim off my roses. Play nice with the other kids, see you la—oh, don’t give me that face. You know I have zero capacity for pity.”
“I’ll do weeding for a week,” she volunteered. “If you stay.”
“Two weeks. And put some tea on.”

Minh perched in a chair while her youngest spawn put tea on, eying the young man her daughter had brought home perplexedly. Had she met him before? She couldn't recall doing so, and one would think it would be hard to forget someone with such a disaster of hair. And even if she and this Tosiek had met before, what did it matter if she remembered him or not? Thalia should know by now that both her parents were just a tad bit self-absorbed and prone not to remember anyone unless that someone was of some sort of immediate use, so why was Thalia upset?
Resting her head in her hands, she ran through the various scenarios that entailed remembering one of the many faceless people Thalia had dragged home over the years. Minh doubted from how Thalia was acting that they were going to be experimenting on him, which really was a shame, but maybe they’d experimented on him in the past? Probably not. Which only left one option.
“Are you pregnant?” she asked the Tosiek.

The question shouldn't have been a surprise. Really, it totally shouldn't. And yet, it still was.
Tosiek spluttered, at a loss for a reply before trying to regain his composure. It took a moment, however, a long moment in which the sparrow hybrid was staring at the feline with wide eyes and a beak tightly shut. It was depressing that thought occurred to him to lie and say yes; maybe that would make him memorable enough.
"As a matter of fact, no, I'm not, Minh. Thank you for asking." He paused and, by sheer strength of will, did not ask if she was pregnant. If she was, he really didn't want to know, and especially didn't want to know if Mnem had caused another spawnage on Minh. They'd gotten something pretty amazing the first time and he was fairly positive a second attempt wouldn't end up nearly as nicely.
"How is your experimenting going?"

Mnem smiled a lazy, wicked smile at the bird, choosing to respond for Minh, as she felt Tosiek wouldn't get a clear answer out of her on the subject of her work anyway.
(She was glad no one was pregnant. The last thing the world needed was more spawn, especially if those spawn somehow involved the mixing of hers and Minh's and Kel's genes. She had no idea what the fuck would happen with that genetic cocktail, but it couldn't be good. But then again, that's why bedrooms had pillows in them, to smother unwanted occupants.)
"Minh's work is proceeding marvelously. Unfortunately, she is rather desperately in need of a little birdie mix to affix a few new sets of hands to. You wouldn't happen to know where we can find such a thing, would you, Timothy love? When Minh finds things she needs, she rarely lets them out of the house."

Minh was rather disappointed that the little bird-creature wasn’t, in fact, pregnant—prenatal experimentation always offered lots of interesting things to consider and play with, though waiting to see the results was always a trying affair—but she perked right back up when Mnem answered the bird-creature’s inquiry. Such a splendid idea! She wasn’t so sure about attaching a new set of hands, but she’s always wanted to try and recreate her own mutation, or perhaps what had happened to her eldest daughter—such an interesting mutation, and Elyse seemed to have adapted well to it. What would he look better with? Tentacles, or flowers? She eyed him, considering, and then remembered that Thalia actually seemed to like the strange little bird-creature. She’d probably get upset if they locked him up, then. A shame. Then why had Mnem mentioned it to begin with? A dream, crushed. So sad.
Still, it was good manners and all to respond, “Oh, yes. I tend to be a tad possessive/obsessive, so I’ve been told,” she smiled, “and I do so love my work. But it is rather hard to find a good test subject these days.” Her tentacles twitched, remembering times past; Minh and she really should go hunting again, at some point. There was only so much one could accomplish with banders.
Maybe Thalia wouldn’t be upset if he agreed willingly to some experimentation? With the help of some mind-altering drugs in his tea, of course.
