In The End, What Matters? [Finished]

Ez watched in silence as the doctor left the room. He felt awkward as his mother spoke. He was unsure of what to do. Was he supposed to hug her? Or was he supposed to give her space? How was he supposed to act at a time like this?

He decided that going over and hugging her was the better of the two options. When she asked the question he remained silent for a little bit as he tried to blink away a few tears that were burning in his eyes. He didn't want to break down right now.

But he did anyway. Sobbing he squeezed his mother tightly. "I don't know, Mommy" he whimpered through a sob. Dad was gone. What was going to happen to the entire family? How were they going to keep things together? How were they supposed to stay a family without Dad around? How was anything supposed to keep on going?

The world had ripped itself free of its orbit and was crashing, uncontrolled, through the atmosphere. Calia was lost, afraid, more hurt than she'd ever felt before, her mind shattered into a thousand pieces that she knew would never fully fit together again. How could they? There was a massive hole inside of her now, a hole shaped like the man who lay dead.

She collapsed into her son's arms, the sobs wracking her body making it impossible for her to speak, barely letting her breathe. She pressed her face into white feathers and cried, attempting to speak only when the sorrow let up enough for her to see the face of her son. She brought a hand up to her head, pushing her hair aside and wiping at the tears that covered her cheeks.

"Theofilus, he...[/b]" she said, her voice cracking on his name. No. How could he be... "He must have had a plan. In case...[/b]" again, she couldn't say it. She couldn't believe it. He couldn't be gone. Her brain simply couldn't accept it. She swallowed hard, fighting the waves of sorrow, trying to keep them back. Her family... Their family needed her.

"We follow his plan.[/b]" she said finally, finding a firmness in that resolution. If he had left them some plan to follow, some desires for his court, it would be easy for her to direct the rest of the family to fall into the places required of them. Best yet, she could know that she was doing what he wanted.
