Ichigo had always wanted to put off going to the courts until he was good and ready. He was, however, completely and utterly without a decent job to his sorry name. Being desperate and living on the street didn't exactly sit well with the mouse. So he found himself on the path to the courts. He could apply to be a guard. That way he would put his bodyguard talents to use and actually get paid a decent amount of money for it. Now it was just a matter of finding the right person. He looked down at the paper clutched in his paw. Now where was Her Excellence Vessatha's office? The court seemed awkwardly empty, but he imagined it was just because of the time of day. Everyone was probably busy in their offices working. He found the proper door and breathed a sigh of relief. That was a lot easier than he expected. Before lightly tapping on the door he readjusted his belt. Ichigo took a deep breath. He really hoped they would actually hire him.

It was nearly a week since Vessatha had sent out the missives regarding necessary workers. The steady flow of potential hirelings was very encouraging, but there were still very essential holes that needed to be filled, one of which was that of guards. Being a some what paranoid person, the ferret had no want to go past the inner gardens of the Court in fear of some lunatic Lysaras-lover coming and attacking from her. There wasn't anyone to stop such lunatics at the moment. Whether or not they existed was another question, but that's where her paranoia took over. Far too used to the steady flow of people in and out of her office the past few days, the ferret didn't even bother to look up at the knock. "Come in," She called out.

Ichigo took another deep breath before opening the door and trotting into the room. Bowing his head slightly he said, "Your Excellence, Vessatha, I've come looking for a job as a palace guard. I hope I'm not in the wrong place, and you do take care of matters like that, I wouldn't want to waste your time."
He bowed his head as low as possible and waited for a response. He wasn't going to be disrespectful in a place like that. He may have been a decently ranked card for a commoner, but he had no idea what this noble would think of him.
As proof of his quality of a guard, he hoped that was, he had his sword carefully tied to his belt with a large ribbon tying the sword shut. It was awkward looking for a mouse, but he thought it suited him well enough. It did worry him though that he was able to get into the palace without so much as someone stopping him at the gate.

Vessatha glanced up from her papers and had to take a second, longer look. A mid-ranger? Interesting. She'd only seen a few of them, they were so reclusive; assuming he was here for a job he would definitely be an asset.
"You're in the right place, yes. Have a seat, Mr..?" She trailed off, an eyebrow raised, though she guestured to one of the chairs in front of her desk.
The sword at his hip was reassuring. The ferret wouldn't personally trust anyone claiming to be a guard that didn't even protect themselves. "What are your qualifications? Do you have any previous experience working specifically for someone? What types of martial arts are you trained in, if any? Are you familiar with the Court of Spades policies regarding who is to be let in where, when, and to whom?" She rattled off without more than a pause, then stopped to let him answer.
Nothing like an on-the-spot interview to test someone's skills.

"Ichigo," the mouse provided as he went to the seat that she directed.
He didn't expect such a quick interview, but the court had been falling a part before hand. And he wouldn't turn down an opportunity for work when he had been so terribly hard pressed for it.
The mouse thought for a moment before answering to the best of his ability. "I've been training in swordsmanship since I could pick up a sword, and I'm learned in traditional Mid-ranged style hand to hand combat. I have been a bodyguard for the past five years and have successfully protected all of my clients without incident."
His ear twitched at the mention of Spades' policies. "I know about where titled court nobles should be, where and when, and that guests are supposed to be escorted while on the palace grounds. Or at least it was like that the last time I read the policy. I imagine it's changed since the new reign."

"Mr. Ichigo," She repeated with a nod.
The ferret listened to his answers carefully, automatically comparing his skill set to what they had already. Swordsmanship and body guarding. They'd hired several general guards already, but no personal ones - and she wasn't about to send any of the nobles off without a guard, though Lysaras had somehow felt comfortable with it. With Donnie in charge she felt she could get away with demanding that everyone be protected while they were abroad.
It wasn't as if she was asking for anything obscene, requesting that everyone stay alive an' all.
She smiled slightly when he faltered a bit at the Spades policy question. "Should you be hired, you will be trained on all of the new policies."
With that, she continued asking questions. "What is your personal life like? Do you have any close family, a mate, children? Anyone that would miss you if you suddenly died? What about your personal habits? Do you keep a regular schedule? Can you change your eating and sleeping habits to match someone else's if necessary?"

Ichigo raised an eyebrow. There were some questions he would carefully avoid. "I would like to think my personal life is pretty uneventful and not worthy of mentioning during an interview. I have no mate, no children, but I do have a dear sister and a mother. I have no intention of kicking the bucket, but I hope the pair of them and a few of my friends would miss me. I can regulate my eating and sleeping habits to someone else if needed."
Hopefully that would be answers she would be looking for, even if there was a tiny bit humor in them. He did take his job very seriously, but he couldn't exactly say that he was ready to die with a straight face. He had every intention of living even if it involved clawing someone's face off. And of course he would be more than willing to protect someone.

Vessatha smiled a bit to herself when he avoided parts of her questions. It was a little bit personal to share with a complete stranger, but if he went and died on her she had no wish to be attacked by some relative smothered in grief. Overly sad people really weren't her thing.
"Well, Mr. Ichigo, I'm going to give you a trial week as a regular palace guard. As you seem to be overqualified for that, if you do well I'll bump you up to personal guard and you'll be travelling with our nobles on an as-needed basis. You may also be needed to sit in on meetings with particularly scary foreigners or particularly male foreigners, as we'd rather our new Queen didn't start wars because some stupid boy offended her. I suggest sharpening your mediation skills."
The ferret opened a drawer and rifled through some papers, then slapped a contract onto the top of the desk. "Read through and sign, please. What are you looking for in terms of pay?"

That was awfully wonderful news to hear. The mouse couldn't help but smile a bit as she set the contract down on the table. He read through it quietly as he debated on how to answer her question. Everything was there that he needed to know, including the starting wage of a guard.
He remembered why he had become a bodyguard. However, at least this had the option of moving up and not losing most of his vital limbs and organs. The mouse refrained from signing the contact before addressing the issue he was given.
"Putting me on starting salary spelled out in the contract will be fine. Most of my previous jobs involved keeping my life in constant danger, so I don't expect the pay to be as high here until I actually put my life on the line." He said before signing the contact.
He really was lucky to get a job like this.

Vessatha was glad to see he actually read the contract. Despite the fact that she said to to every hireling, very few actually took the time to do it. She made exceptions to the few that couldn't read, of course, but the rest had no excuse; she liked to put loopholes in her contracts that came back to bite them in the rear later because of it.
She nodded in response. "That sounds reasonable. After a week or two, set up a meeting with me and we'll talk about moving you on to personal guarding work." She took the contract, signed under his name, then slipped it into a filing cabinet.
"Come with me, I'll set you up with a room," She requested, then stretched and stood from her desk. "I'm assigning you a single because you're unmated, but should you bring someone in, I'll upgrade you."
