"Se intended to use a dagger with Lowland poison on Rai. His twisted version of poetic justice, we're guessing. Ira found out about this and contrived to replace the poison with a sort of anesthetic that would make him look dead, fast, so that Se would hopefully stop going on rampages due to Rai's presence. It was a last ditch effort to help Se."
Elias fought not to dig his shoe like a guilty schoolboy. He'd struggled with the thought of Rai's possible death more than anything, but also with what he felt to be a lack of loyalty. He didn't like the plan, but he had gone along with it, and was slightly ashamed of the lie by omission.
"As it stands, it should be understood that the new Queen of Hearts might not make it past the next harvest moon if he isn't greatly improved by this tactic. In the meantime, though, I've offered Rai a place to stay here. It will be the best for everyone right now if he stays hidden, and this is the best place to conceal him for now."
He walked to the side of Rai's bed, putting a steady and firm hand on the shoulder should the stallion try to rise. "I'm sorry, Whip. I - " now wasn't the time to point fingers. "You should have been told. You should have been able to prepare better. I'm sorry." And mad. Regretful and angry. That would come later.

The Queen listened to Elias' explanation on everything that had gone on, though he only gave a nod of his head to acknowledge them. The reply from his daughter gave him a sense of relief that his friend was going to permanently return from his world of death . . . at least to some degree.
At his friends horrible sound of that he could only relate close to the word of despair the mouse was at a lost for a reply. Nothing he could say would help easy the pain or make anything better. Reaching a hand out and resting it on the foot board hung his head, his own weakness choking him. He was not at all sure what to do with the situation at hand, especially for his friend.
"Whip is always welcome here and this will be his new home unless he should decide otherwise."
Elyse had to glance away to hide the tears that sprung to her eyes at the Heart Queen's cry. She could heal physical wounds but there was much that was still out of her reach.

The sound broke the whip's heart and she reached out to lay a hand gently on the stallion's arm. She had no idea how to help comfort the man, but she refused to leave him alone now.
Rai wouldn't try to stand, he couldn't make himself move. Still, he also didn't think he could face the two men closest to him yet. Suits. Oh, Light above. He tried to bring his hand to cover his face and lifted what remained of his left arm. Nothing reached his face. He opened his eyes and stared at the stub for a moment. A shudder shook his body.
Quickly, he brought up his right hand, as though that might save him from the truth. "Please. I. . . would like. . . to be alone. For awhile." He shivered again, unable to articulate further. He couldn't think. He should have died. He wished he had.
Whip turned his face away from the others, fighting desperately for control. Enyo bit her lip uneasily before glancing over to Elyse. The healer would be the final decision, but the weapon obviously agreed that the man needed some time. She also would not be leaving, regardless of any desire the stallion might have to be utterly alone.

There was a slight pause of hesitation on the two mice's part at the man's request. With a nod of her head she quickly took charge of the situation. "It is best we comply with his wishes." Standing up she walked over to her father first, convincing him with a gently nudge to leave before she turned to the female stranger.
The mouse simply gave a nod of his head in reply. Tears were still threatening to break loose at his friend's beyond physical pain. This was going to change so much for all of them and would take more than a little while before something resembling normal resulted.
"It will do him best if we give him time, dear." She offered to the female, laying a hand gently on her arm. "Why do you not come with me for a little bit and we can talk over a few things? I promise we will come back to tend to him a little later."
Heading to the door with that, she paused for a moment to receive a nod from Elias saying he would comply with the man's wishes before leaving. She would give him some time to himself before returning to continue her job.

Elias tried to think about what to tell his friend. He had a notion why Ira had ripped the bone arm off, and it was a good idea, awful as it had seemed. He wanted to explain about the arm. He wanted to explain why Rai hadn't known anything about what was coming.
He opened his mouth half a dozen times, but words were never forthcoming. He hadn't yet figured out how to gracefully encounter the situation of having a best friend mortally wounded and crippled, but if he were feeling more jovial, he would laugh and admit that Ms. Manners had definitely not covered that ground yet.
There was nothing funny about this.
Light have mercy on the Court of Hearts with its new Queen.
Finally, after what seemed like hours but was mere minutes, he nodded, gently patted Shinrai's shoulder, and rose to leave the room. He would never be far away, and would be here when Rai was ready to see him. To forgive him. Elias could only hope.
