(Maxwell is more than welcome to being super-mom. Cecilia wouldn't protest. XD)
Cecilia flinched as the child began to wail again, her whole body going rigid and her eyes widening with uncertainty. She had managed to raise this child up until now, but not nearly well enough. Isolde's neediness still left Cecilia trembling but Maxwell swiftly came to the rescue and suddenly Cecilia was alone on the couch.
The crying was done and over in record time and Cecilia was left with a helpless and awed expression when Maxwell returned.
In the name of the Suits...how was he so good with her when Cecilia herself could barely touch her?
"I... can't rightly remember." Cecilia murmured, looking so pathetic that she would've given herself a swift boot in the rear if she'd ever seen herself. This wasn't 'her'. Not at all. "Nothing good." The doe sighed heavily and resisted the urge to sniffle. "Thank you for taking such good care of me, Mom, ...and for helping with Isolde."

"Come on then, into the kitchen. I think you need to be fed too, though I can make something far heartier for you than a bottle of milk," he said, pushing her of the couch and into the kitchen. Normally he might have left her there to relax, but he thought she would appreciate having the company of a sane adult around instead of just her daughter. "And remember, I took care of nine of you all at once, at least with Ophelia's help." He hadn't seen much of Silvanus, and admittedly, he hadn't usually had charge over all of the kids at the same time, but it was a lot easier to keep an eye on one child rather than several. "I've got practice."
Nudging her to sit down in a chair, he paused before heading over to figure out what he was going to make her, to give her another hug. "You're my daughter, Cecilia. Of course I'll take care of you, as best I can." Then he turned and began looking through her cupboards for something for her to eat; nothing too heavy, of course. But filling, and hopefully similar to the simple foods he'd made for them as children. Comfort foods were best.

"Food would be nice..." Without question, Cecilia allowed herself to be led into the kitchen and settled at the dining table.
Despite her anxities, Cecilia couldn't help but smile as Maxwell doted on her. He was such a wonderful 'motherly' sort and Cecilia envied him, in a way, for his skill with children. A skill that she herself was sure she'd never be able to learn. It also made her miss the time she usually spent with Ez; the only other person who could bring a genuine smile to her face when everything else seemed so bleak.
The doe was quiet for a long time, simply watching Maxwell cook as she brooded on her thoughts. Brooding wasn't at all suited to her nature, but it was required now and she seemed to have no choice in the matter.
"...What am I going to do with her, Mom? ...I don't think I can keep her any longer, not like this." Her tone was considerably more serious, lacking the edge of panic it had held before. At a distance from her problem and with the smell of comforting food in the air, Cecilia's head felt clearer now than it had in months. "I'm no good at being a Mum, it's not fair on Isolde that she gets stuck with me."

It didn't take him all that long before he finally had something that he, at least, considered fit for consumption by someone who has been exhausted by trying to care for a child all on her own. Turning from the stove, he dished up a plate of food, before setting the rest aside to stay warm. She might want more, and she could always save the rest for later so that she didn't need to prepare anything just then.
"Here, eat up. You need it," he said, placing a fork close at hand for her, because she at least could use them. "And remember I had Ophelia around to help me with you all," he said softly. She was on her own, and he wondered what had happened to little Isolde's father. He wasn't going to ask though. It was her right to keep that part of her life private from her mother.
He waited until she'd eaten some before he finally asked, "Would you like me to take care of her for a while? I'm sure Ophelia would love to have her stay with us. You could have a vacation from her." He didn't want to offer to take the little one permanently - he had no clue if Cecilia wanted to give up her daughter like that (he wouldn't have, but he was different, as was previously mentioned). A vacation from children was always a good thing though, and now he'd have a chance to have a kid around again.

Cecilia was delighted with the food set before her and while it couldn't entirely break the misery of her situation, it did make it a great deal better. Being pampered was absolutely lovely, she's always been addicted to that pleasure. Who could blame her though? Everyone was so very willing to cater to her, after all. It was that flaw in her personality more than anything which made being a mother so very hard. How in the name of the suits was she expected to cater to someone else when she was so very, very used to being the one getting all the doting attention?
"Thanks mom, thanks so much." The doe smiled a little, beginning to eagerly eat. After a few bites, she paused briefly and nodded. "Well, yes...but I don't even know who her father is... It's not like I could ask him for help." The doe sighed, it was hard admitting that Isolde had come from a fling, no less one of many flings.
Cecilia returned to eating for a long time, trying to ignore her shame in favor of food.
In the end it wouldn't matter. No matter how miserable or ashamed she was, she would go back to her ways just as soon as she could... Just as soon as she got away from Isolde.
And Maxwell's offer was just what she needed. The doe could've dropped her fork in surprise and the flicker of delight which crossed her eyes was impossible to ignore. "T-Take her? Would you really? I... A vacation would be wonderful! How long could you keep her?" Already Cecilia knew what she was going to do. She'd get that terrible little thing away from her, give her to Momma and Poppa... They'd take wonderful care of her, give her the love Cecilia couldn't...and keep her from ever having to deal with this horrible situation again.

Maxwell wasn't all that thrilled to hear that she didn't know who the father was - that meant that, during the time when she'd been raising Isolde alone, she hadn't even had any sort of monetary support to fall back on. Which meant that his little daughter might not have nearly the amount of resources that were needed to properly raise a child, much less to take care of herself. How terrible!
"I'm sorry for that, sweetling. I wish you'd found a young man to keep, instead of having things work out the way they did." He knew his Cecilia was a flirt, and had probably hopped into and out of a good many beds, but it wasn't exactly something he wanted to think about; and really, he was just hoping that some day she'd find a partner (male or female, really), who she would want to keep, who wanted to keep her. Someone to take care of her the way she should be taken care of, so that things like this didn't happen while she lived so far from him.
"Of course I'll take care of her! She's my granddaughter, why wouldn't I?" Maxwell smiled warmly at that thought; really, his granddaughter. What a wonderful thing. "I can take her for as long as you need, angel. You certainly need the rest and the chance to get your life back together." And if she needed the rest of her life away...well, he wouldn't let little Isolde grow up completely without her mother's presence, but he'd be perfectly happy doing most of the work.

Cecilia smiled a little, trying to mask the hint of sadness that crept into her features at such a comment. Find a young man to keep... Like that would really happen? Very few people wanted to keep women like her, nothing but objects. It was for that reason that she was quite keen on keeping her heart out of her work. She enjoyed what she did, but she wasn't looking to fall in love.
"Don't worry about me, mum. I've got Ez, and he's the best sort of friend you could hope for." She sighed lightly, thinking about the Selkie Sparrow. It had been a while since their last get together... she'd been so stressed over Isolde once the girl had started vocalizing her wants instead of just crying all the time. The doe sniffled. She would have to go see him now that she was finally free.
"Thank you so much, mom..." The doe hesitated, expression turning a little guilty. Even she knew the quality of life that Isolde had here wasn't great. "She'll grow up better because of it, I'm sure." Maybe she'd even do what her mother couldn't and escape this life that Cecilia was so engulfed in...
