Bernard gave the Club a reassuring smile as he stumbled over the King's name. He knew it was odd, not to request a title...but it was far too formal and made him feel...weighed down. He was glad the other man had taken so easily to the idea, hills but putting up with another overzealous title-absorbed Card would drive him mad...
"Hmmm, very well then, Elias. I'll move under the assumption that you're not an over-glorified spy for the time being, and if the questions you need answered get too tight, we'll involve Rai."
He nodded at the first question and leaned back in his chair, thinking.
"A danger to Rai? Um...well, there's always Pravus...I hate to say it, but my nephew's King is a bit...unbalaned and he could be an issue if Rai gets on his bad side."
He steepled his fingers and creased his brow.
"My nephew, of course, is his own special set of personal dangers...though he seems to like Rai well enough for the time being, staying on his good side as best as is possible is always a good plan. I don't know of any staff members...kitchens and servants, who would be a problem. I go through all of their records before they're hired myself...they're all perfectly agreeable people."

Elias nodded. Even he had heard such things about Queen Serafino. He carefully kept his face schooled through the descriptions of the Fino and this Pravus, though to himself he wondered why a potential wild-card like that might be left as a threat. There had to be a good reason to it, and Elias made a mental note to find that out as well, but that would most likely have to wait, especially since it dealt directly with The Queen’s choices in Kings.
He thought and hoped that this might be a good time to inject questions about Sekhmet into the conversation. He wished he had some Diamond ability to make it go more easily. Well, he dealt the hand he was played as always. “Speaking of Kings, you just reminded me of something. I don’t know how many Kings Queen Serafino has, and that might be the problem. Sorry, I’ll get to the point in a second, if you’ll forgive the ramblings of an old hermit. When the new King Sekhmet came to get me in the Marsh, she mentioned that it was her only chance to become a titled King. Not those words exactly, you understand, but something along those lines. I thought that was a little odd, and Queen Shinrai has said that she’s pretty tight lipped. Is there anything that she perhaps might be hiding from him, thinking that it would be better to reveal it later?” He wasn’t sure how much to press, how much to ask. He might have overstepped already, but hopefully Rai vouching for him would get the information out, and the stallion could hear it too, which was really the whole point of the venture.

"Not an issue, Queen Serafino currently has four Kings: Myself, Gaston, Pravus, and Severus. They're all fairly easily assessable...with the exception of Severus...he's a bit of a recluse but a good person."
He chuckled a little at the idea of the man before him being an "old hermit" he looked anything but...maybe a little old, but certainly fit and well toned. His mannerisms also spoke of someone familiar with Court procedure...hermit? Really...?
"Ah...Sekhmet. She does have a bit of a past...she wouldn't have been able to get a title with Serafino, no. If you want to know more on that subject I'm afraid I'll need conformation of your status with Queen Rai. We can come back here to talk afterward, if you would rather speak in private...I just need to know that you are who you claim to be."
Bernard hoped the man wouldn't be offended, but he really couldn't spread the information about his nephew's Kings and...their problems at this point unless he knew it wouldn't...leak...

Elias fought down an irritated groan. He'd expected that reaction but had hoped it wouldn't come.
"Alright, let's go get him. I don't care so much about privacy, and it's something that would affect him, but we'll see if he wants to hear it tonight or later. He was looking a little tired or like he had a headache or something, and I can always let him know later. You're sure this isn't an inconvenience?" El didn't want to demand so much of a King's time, especially if the King was in the middle of some important paperwork.
He wondered what exactly about Sekhmet's past couldn't be told. It seemed a little odd to him. Bernard did confirm that she had a past, and the implication lie there that it kept her from getting a title with Queen Serafino. Well, Bernard hadn't indicated that he would keep the information from him, he just had to prove himself, and not in a hard way, either. He could be patient. "After you, Bernard." He could at least display good manners even if Bernard didn't want to use titles.

Bernard stood, grabbing a few papers to take with him and nodding in thanks. "No, it isn't a problem for me. If he's too tired we can continue tomorrow, but all he really has to do is confirm for me."
The magician smiled, he really wasn't too terribly bothered, he just had to make sure that he wasn't giving this information out to just anyone, he had to be certain that this was in fact, information that would make its way back to Queen Rai and not out in the open.
"Thank you, Elias."
He moved quickly down the hallway to the staircase and climbed two floors, going slowly enough that the other's strange Biped form could follow. Upon reaching Queen Rai's bedroom, he gave a small knock to the door and stood back by the Club, hoping Rai would be up and about. Best to get this all taken care of now.

Rai turned at the sound of a knock; he'd only just returned to his suite from his study. That knock was not one of Elias' and he wasn't entirely certain who could be at his door.
"Come in," he called easily, snatching a robe and pulling it on before the door could open and admit his visitors. He lofted a brow as Bernard stepped in and he greeted the man with a slight incline of his head. "Your Highness, this is a surpri--"
Elias followed Bernard in and Rai lofted a brow, his voice taking on a wry tone. "El, wot the snot did you do this time?" By the Light, the canine was supposed to go out on an information mission and avoid face cards, not get caught by the Queen of Hearts' first King. El was trying to get them both in trouble.

“Look who I ran into!” El said brightly. “He’s going to torture me to death and then punish you for bringing me here. Won’t that be fun?”
Elias remembered perfectly well Rai’s warnings, and the stallion should know him better than that. He made no effort to clear up whether he was being sarcastic in the sense that his voice wasn’t conveying the proper tone for the punishment or whether the words themselves were the lie. See how the horse liked to chew on that.
“Bernard here,” he said, taking advantage of the fact that Rai didn’t know the King had requested he address him like that, “wants to make sure that I’m supposed to be here, and that it’s okay for me to ask questions. There are far too many daring, handsome, six-limbed spies running around.” Before Bernard could take offense, El plodded on with and explanation. “No, see, I can understand the reasoning for being suspicious. It’s like double-think. What sort of spy or thief is going to run around inside a Court in a conspicuous, bulky form? Well, obviously not one good enough to get in as far as I did, so running around like that would be both a perfect alibi. I’ll have to keep that one in mind,” he muttered to himself after his speech.

Bernard was caught slightly off-guard by the "greeting" the Equine Queen gave to the Club.
Well, at least he knew the Canine was supposed to be here on some levels...
"Thank you, your Majesty. Yes, I have run afoul of this blaggard...I suppose we'd all best have a chit-chat before he starts slitting throats."
Bernard said with a grin as he seated himself on a small couch, watching the other two interact...so had Elias really raised Queen Rai?....It seemed fairly plausible now, they certainly joke-bickered enough.
He watched the way that Elias' brow hiked up and a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. He liked this Club...he knew humor...and how to deal with children. Always good...Bernard had always failed miserably at appeasing children...imagine...forcing them to go to school...
Memories of Lani's screams still haunted him at night...
"Anyway, as perfect as that alibi may be, Elias. I appreciate your cooperation, I'll be better able to bounce things off the both of you anyway... So, your Majesty? What is it that you need to know?"

Rai rolled his eyes and gave a small sigh at El's retort; the canine really had no sense of discretion. At all. Which, of course, was probably part of why Rai still liked the man who had raised him. Nevertheless, he sent El a warning glance when he referred to the King as simply 'Bernard' with no sign of title or respect.
Seriously, the canine was going to get him killed some day.
"Sadly, your Highness," Rai gave a slightly melodramatic sigh. "That might actually be an issue with this one. He's a bit bloodthirsty at times." He gave a small laugh and turned his thoughts to the matter on hand.
"I have just accepted Sekhmet as my King," he made the announcement in a quiet, firm voice, eyes watching Bernard for any reaction. "And I'm curious to her past and why exactly she was sent my way in the first place." If anyone besides Queen Serafino knew, it would be Bernard.
