"Perfect," she said, gathering up a small stack a cookbooks. There were a couple of other books she wanted to snag, but those weren't the types you went looking for in polite company. "Come by the day after tomorrow, around noonish, and have an empty stomach."
That done, she headed back to get things ready. Kitchen staff was a bit perplexed by her insistence on actually cooking things herself, but gave no protest. She set up the table in the garden as far away from anything poisonous as was possible. Fortunately, the weather was good.
And, because Mnem was not the type to pass up a good opportunity, she invited a third party to their little meeting. She thought it might be nice to give Kelasia a chance to do something other than moon after Theofilus. Nothing wrong with the man, mind--just the fact that Kel was so very dedicated gave Mnem a queasy pain in the Gardens part of her brain.
Perfectly-perserved memories of throwing rocks at boys who had wandered too close to her play area surfaced, and she smiled. She glanced at her watch. Almost noon.

Kelasia stepped rather hesitantly out into the gardens, pale eyes blinking in the bright sunlight. She'd been locked indoors almost constantly for a few weeks now, going over more paperwork. Her eyes felt a bit strained and her brain felt heavy from all of the words and numbers that threatened to overwhelm her. There was still a great deal more to do as well, and it depressed her if she bothered to think too much about it. So Mnem's invitation was met with trepidation and guilty delight. Guilt was the winning emotion right now as she 'snuck' out to go have a tea party rather than finish the mounds of paperwork still waiting for her. Nevertheless, she had no doubt that Mnem was aware of her current project and the skunk was fairly certain that if she didn't show up of her own free will, the canine would come kidnap her and force her to come. So the Sorgaire Range woman skitted out towards the table and gave Mnem a small, equally hesitant smile tinged with pleasure at seeing her friend and continued guilt that she wasn't still inside working. "Anything I can do to help?" she asked softly.

"Yes," Mnem said, flashing the skunk a smile and placing a tray of sweets on the table. She ushered to the chair. "You can sit down and enjoy some snacks. Idril should be joining us shortly."
She was very pleased that Kel had come of her own volition; Mnem would have hated to have to hunt her down and drag her forcibly out of her cave. Well, not hated, exactly, but it would have been an irksome expenditure of unnecessary effort. Mnem managed to perform her functions on her own time--anything too dull got foisted off on Jacks, if she could trust them with it--and would not have accepted Kel declining to join them.
She planned on keeping Kel occupied for as long as possible. And food usually served well as a snaring technique, in her experience. And if that stopped working--well, she'd figure something out.

Reaching the garden the mouse wondered around till stumbled upon the table and Her Highnesses Mnem and Kel.
Though she had slowly become friends with Mnem over the last few days from her frequent visits she was still nervous to be around the higher ranks. Though she had seen the Sorgaire Range skunk around the library from time to time, and had spoken to her on occasion, she still did not really know enough of the female to make any judgment on her.
Hesitatingly she made her way closer to the table.
“I am so-sorry to be late” She said softly, taking the empty seat. She was assuming that since she had been invited it would be okay for her to do such a thing. After sitting herself down she glanced between the two females, folding her paws in her lap, unsure of what to do or what to say.

Kel sat when Mnem told her to, still well aware that the other woman would be more than willing to put her in her place at the table if she didn't do as the Yarrow Gardens woman told her to. So she sat.
She turned her head when Idril stepped out from another part of the garden and her eyes lit up slightly. She didn't know the mouse very well, but she did appreciate the other woman's work in the library.
"Hello, Idril," Kelasia greeted the Esterberry softly with a gentle smile. "I'm so glad that you've come as well." She truly was; anyone who got to work all the time with books had to be something of a hero to the bibliophile skunk. Sadly, though, her attempt at conversation would fizzle out there unless someone else picked it up.

Sometimes sparkling conversation could ensue in small groups, where everyone did their part to keep things moving; sharing details of each other's lives, discussing politics, nibbling on food occasionally, and all that dainty shit that her younger son probably daydreamed about with little red hearts and sparkles floating overhead.
And then there was now. Once the topic of books was exhausted there were few other conversational avenues to explore.
Mnem gnawed aggressively on a cupcake and wished suddenly that she could just get everyone slamming drunk and inflict them on the palace. She wondered if Kel would loosen up and get bold under the influence; maybe she would do something wild? Eat Theo's hat?
Actually, she felt like Kel would probably do something boring like fall over after half a shot of vodka.
Vodka....
She sighed. She licked off the frosting gore from her fingers. This was shaping up to be a moderate amount of failure. Oh well. Sometimes it couldn't be helped.

As Mnem feared, conversation was stilted, even when focused around the ever-popular subject of books. For Kel's part, however, this was probably one of the least awkward times the skunk had spent at the Court of Diamonds since Theofilus took over, even with the random silences that often pervaded their conversation.
It wasn't long, therefore, before talk was about as interesting as a stick in the mud, and Mnem was obviously getting restless. It was just as well; Kel needed to get back to her paperwork. So when the canine King of Diamonds rose to rid herself of their company, Kelasia did the same, bobbing a quick good-bye to Idril and a wavering smile at Mnem. "Thank you, Mnem, for inviting me; it was very enjoyable."
The skunk waved good-bye once more than hurried back to her desk so she could begin again on her work there.
