Ezra had been feeling quite restless, as of late. Now that Senka was out of the house, he felt no compulsion to do anything--grocery shopping fell several levels down the list of priorities, as did cleaning, earning money, waking up...He supposed he was feeling what some might call empty nest syndrome. Something was empty, anyway. He was genuinely happy for her, that she had found herself a nice--if unusually timid--fellow, and a house, and ambition. It was just that now he lacked direction and focus. Maybe he needed to get out, was all. He spent all his time in this little house. Perhaps if he got out and saw things, he would want to do things. Given his general state of utter apathy, this was not tremendously likely, but anything was possible. Within reason. Sort of. So a trip around the world it was. He sent a letter to Senka. He didn't want to wander off without letting her know his plans, and seeing her before he left.

Senka did not like the letter that was waiting for her when she got home that evening, and with an absent kiss to Vishne, she was right back out the door. It was ridiculous to be upset, of course--she was a grown woman now, and capable of looking after herself--but she'd always thought, perhaps irrationally, that Ezra would always be around. The thought of him going away left a bitter taste in her mouth. Still. He was only going away on a trip; he'd be back, eventually. It was just a vacation--nothing to worry about. No reason to be upset. Senka didn't bother to knock, using the key her Uncle insisted she keep to let herself in. "Uncle Ezra. I brought Ramen." His favorite, bought from the corner stall a few bocks away; it was better than the packaged variety they usually ate. It would make a good going away present.

Ah, Senka was such a thoughtful child. If nothing else, Ezra could rest assured that he had raised a girl with fine culinary taste. That was something to be proud of.
He took the noodles gratefully, and split them into two bowls.
He was proud of her, honestly. He was happy she was going somewhere with her life, that somehow his parenting had not crippled her with apathy. He didn't buy into the idea that parents lived vicariously through their children--he wanted Senka's life to be entirely her own--but he felt good to have...brought her up right, he supposed. He had accomplished something. Something worthwhile and meaningful.
He was sure he would never find the right words to tell her that, so he had to just let it sit there and trust that she knew.
He said, "Thank you, Senka. Have a seat."

Senka took a seat and slowly ate the noodles that he had dished into a bowl for her--they were good noodles, and at any other occasion she would have wolfed them down, but because of the circumstances, they settled uncomfortably in the pit of her stomach. She ate more for appearance sake than anything.
"So, you're going away then," not a question, because he'd already said as much in his letter, "Do you know where?" Where was very important; she didn't want him wandering off anywhere dangerous, after all. Her Uncle Ezra needed to come back in one piece. If she thought he would comply, she would have demanded a full itinerary.
As it was, the very least he could do was write to her, and she said as much. If he wrote regularly, then at least she would know that nothing unfortunate had happened to him.

"Not sure," he said. He honestly didn't have a clue. He was going to do some free-spirit bullocks, see where the wind took him. He was sort of just trusting the universe to provide a path for him. Not the most proactive or productive course of action, but he really had nothing particular in mind that he wanted to accomplish.
"I might head down the road to the Court of Spades," he said. There was plenty of opportunity ready and waiting to attack him down that direction. He had even entertained notions of going there, once...when Darius was still around. He'd surprised himself by being upset by news of his demise, when it eventually got to him. (Murdered, somehow. The details were vague. Such a terrible waste.) Senka had been too young to remember ever having met him. "I will certainly keep you updated, though."
He didn't want her to worry, after all.

Senka mustered a smile, "It sounds like an adventure." Her Uncle Ezra deserved an adventure, she thought; it wasn't fair to keep him around just so he was handy whenever she wanted a hug. She wasn't a little girl anymore; she'd lived on her own for years now, and sometimes she didn't speak to him for several weeks at a time. She'd grown up, and now it was time for her to let go of the nest. It was harder than she'd like to admit.
She cleaned up their dishes, delaying the inevitable, but she could only put it off for so long and eventually it was time to leave.
Despite the fact that neither of them had been overly vocal about their affection, she made sure to hug him tight before she left, "I love you, Uncle Ezra. Don't forget to write."
She left him to pack.

"I love you too, Senka. Take care of yourself."
And, with the most important things having been thus said, his niece left, and Ezra went about getting his things together. There were...a remarkably small number of things. He didn't wear clothes. There were no toiletries besides a toothbrush. He had no items of comfort that he simply needed to take with him, lest he fall into misery.
Really, all he needed was a sleeping bag, some money, and a map. The first and last on the list were easy; the middle one he was a little short on. But he could pick up some funds as he went along. That could be part of the adventure.
He took a little pad of paper, some envelopes, and a pen, as well. He planned on being diligent in his updates.
He wondered what would happen to the little apartment while he was gone.
He decided he didn't much care, and headed out the door.
