Oh the Angst emo that follows. *eyerolls at self* Anyway, this is a fic I wrote for the sake of myself really, since things have been left open with Malch and Ez for quite sometime now (oi, dead babies.) This is a version that I have on my laptop, so I don't make any promises about being perfectly edited.
Characters: Malc, Ez. Mentions of Theofilus, Eilwyn, Cecila, Rosewood.... I think there are others.
Word Count: 901
This was probably a bad idea but he had no place to go.
He knocked on the door lightly. He really hoped that his brother still lived there. Malc eagerly awaited for the sounds of life. He wasn't disappointed when he heard the door click open, the other sparrow stood there in a bright pink corset. He really did love the color pink.
Ez stood there for a moment in shocked silence. It really was his brother standing at the door with a goofy grin on his face. He really had come back after all this time, still hoping... for what? Did he think it was all magically better? Did he think all the wounds healed after they had a blow up? The sparrow's feathers puffed outwards for a moment before he snorted and turned away from the door, walking back into the apartment, leaving the door wide open.
"No hello?"
"Shut up and get your ass in here," Ez responded as he walked into the kitchen.
Malch frowned as he watched his brother. "Seriously? What did I do wrong....?"
"Get in the fucking apartment so Dad's therapist doesn't hear!" Ez response with a growl as he whipped his tea pot out of the cupboard.
"Dad has a therapist?"
"Don't make me repeat myself."
"But when did dad get a therapist?"
"Get. In."
"Fine, fine," the sparrow said as he walked into the apartment, shutting the door behind him. This was all a bit unnerving. Was Ez still angry at him? He must have been with the way he was acting....
Ez reappeared shortly, a bottle in his hand. Alcohol made things better, even if it was only a little bit. He sat on the sofa and motioned to Malc to join him. Nothing was okay. He was still upset. He still couldn't get over what had happened but he could at least... act better towards his brother? The sparrow sighed and tossed the bottle at his brother when he sat down besides him.
Malc nearly dropped it. The idea of glass on the floor wasn't a fun one. Setting it carefully on the copy table he looked to Ez with a hurt expression.
He ignored it.
"You missed a lot." Ez said. "I heard about your brief visit to the Court of Clubs through a few connections. While you were frolicking around a lot of bad things went down and some good things came out of it. Eilwyn's married. Stuff like that. You know." He shrugged.
"Oh.... well... uh..." Malch could feel himself choking on his words.
"Just shut up. I missed you. I missed you and how bad you are for me. You almost stabbed me in the heart, which says a lot."
"By the way...what happened? What did I do... after your... uh thing... you just blew up at me. I don't get it. I really just wanted to make you feel better and you pushed me away so I... you know," He said quietly.
"I don't want to explain about it really. I just blew up at things after the miscarriage. Feeling worthless makes you do stupid things. Like breaking dad's nose by slamming a door in his face." the sparrow said as he moved a bit closer to Malc. Dumb. This was so very stupid. "I... sort of proposed to Ceci."
"What?" the alarm in Malc's voice was apparent as his head snapped around to look at his sibling. His heart skipped a beat at the thought of losing Ez to marriage. Losing him? Why would he lose him? They were still brothers. They would always be brothers. But they couldn't... they couldn't love each other the same way if...
"She's living here now. Open relationship of course, since you know, she's still a prostitute. I told her she doesn't need to be but no one I love listens to me."
Malc looked relieved. His eyes went back to their normal size as he leaned into the sofa, edging a bit closer to Ez.
There was silence for a while as the brothers avoided eye contact. Edging closer to each other. This was what they both wanted, even if it hurt, right? This is what they both needed. Even if Ez was still somewhat angry... right?
Malc slowly reached his arm around his brother, carefully pulling him closer. Ez didn't stop him. "I--"
There was a sharp and loud whistle that broke into Malc's sentence. Ez pulled away, nearly elbowing him in the beak as he ran to shut off the overflowing teapot.
Well... at least they made progress? Sort of?
Ez came back out of the kitchen holding a cup of freshly brewed tea. He set it down on the table before flopping back on the sofa. He watched Malc out of the corner of his eye, as he proceeded to be awkward. It was a horrible thing to watch. He was so good picking up strange men and women and then he just utterly floundered when he was faced with a real problem. "I still love you. Even if you can't say it. I just don't think I can... do it again. I'm just... too afraid that something will go wrong."
Malc's expressions went from happy to heartbroken in a series of seconds. But what came out of his beak was the most important thing that Ez had heard in ages from the other sparrow. "Okay. I love you too."
In a blur of motion, Ez hugged his brother, tears overflowing. Really. That was all he had wanted to hear for so long.
