Mirriam grinned at that laugh, and then quickly finished swallowing the juicy bite of peach, because otherwise it would be rude! She felt like she should pull back...didn't some Cards not really like it when you got close to them? But Sascha seemed happy! And he was really enjoying the peach. She was glad...and it was only when he was reaching out to her suddenly that Mirriam realized she'd never actually moved away to a more normal talking distance yet but somehow it didn't matter and...oh! She giggled when she realized why. "Thanks, Sascha," she said on a breath, not wanting to hurt his large Bat ears. She looked at his wingclaw, now sticky with juice, and had the sudden urge to lick it. But no, that was silly!
So instead she drew back, though it made her feel a little cold. She scooted closer to him on the branch to make up for it. There! It was always so nice to make new friends! She met his smile. "Yeah, I do! One of the Kings takes care of me," Mirriam explained, and then her eyes widened. "Do you live at the Court of Hearts? I've never been there! I heard the garden is huge and I really like gardens! Roses are not as nice as fruit but they do smell nice and they're pretty! But you're a boy and boys don't usually like flowers for some reason, right?" She tilted her head at him curiously. She'd always wondered why her male friends never seemed to care as much about flowers as she did.

She was staring at his wingclaw oddly. Sascha's stomach churned, and he wasn't sure why. She'd said thank you, hadn't she? That was good, right? But then that look... Oh, wow, but he was way out of his league now, wasn't he?
He smiled at her, abruptly feeling slightly dizzy. Someday, he would have to talk to his sister about this. And maybe his brother, while he was at it. They were both so much better at this kind of thing than he was.
When the little Bat gave him a bit more space, his emotions only felt even more mixed up. This was the first time a girl had ever been close to him, after all... Was it wrong to enjoy it? He hoped not. He also hoped he wasn't being too weird. "That sounds like it would be nice," he said, flashing her a smile. If one lived in a Court, it was best to have a Titled guardian. Usually, such positions of power lead to much more privilege for their charges. "And yup! Well, sorta. I'm thinking about moving out, seeing as I'm not even a Heart an' all."
He rocked back on his feet and shuffled his wings lightly, absently licking at the juice-covered digit (since she hadn't done what her brain had considered, it was still rather sticky and he didn't want to spend an hour preening). "The gardens... They're really pretty great, yeah. Most boys don't like flowers, but I can appreciate that they're still really pretty." Sascha smiled at her. "Did you know you can make tea out of roses?"

Mirriam didn't think Sascha was being weird at all; she was enjoying his company a lot. Though she was a bit too young to understand all the implications, being close to him had made her feel all warm and happy. She was just worried it had been somehow awkward for the mix, and so had adjusted accordingly. "Oh yeah?" She tilted her head a bit to glance at his chest, admiring the pretty swirlies and then blinking at his Rank. She hadn't noticed before, but wow! He had a pretty impressive Rank, didn't he? As for Suit, that didn't matter so much to the girl. Though she'd heard Hearts could be a little...prickly about it.
"Where are you going to move to? The Capital?" If so, maybe she could visit him! That would be nice, right? Her grin widened at the thought, and she subconsciously moved a few inches closer to him on the branch. Oh, good, he was licking the juice off his claw. For some reason, Mirriam felt a little weird watching, like she shouldn't have been looking. But that was silly, right?
Luckily there was the distraction of the gardens. And...Sascha did care about flowers after all? Aww, well that was nice! She nodded. "I agree! They are pretty." Maybe, she thought, he could appreciate them because he was pretty, too? Brown eyes widened as the idle thought was pushed away by new information. "You can? No, I didn't know that! What does it taste like? Have you ever made it before?"

Rather abruptly, Sascha felt the discomfort from before start to slip into his mind once more. The way she was looking at his rank made him alternately want to cringe and puff out his chest just a little more. She was a Diamond, he was a Spade - he was already quite familiar with the way that most of society worked. But then, he was also of a respectable rank, wasn't he? That had to count for something! A nervous smile tugged at his beak and he shuffled under her inspection, happy to notice that she didn't seem to be at all put off by it.
Then, her eyes were back on his face. His ears alternately panned backwards and forwards as she shuffled closer. What should he do? Should he move, or just... stay put? It was a real conundrum. His father - either of them - would have known what to do... His siblings, too. There was a moment of fierce debate in his head.
Once it had settled, Sascha smiled at Miram, staying right where he was on the branch. If she wanted to scoot closer, that was her prerogative. He would assume that proximity to him was not making her uncomfortable. "I'm not really sure just yet, actually. I mean, I figure... no point in tyin' myself down to one place jus' yet, y'know? There's a whole world out there to see!" As he spoke, he extended his wings to their fullest span, his face brightening noticeably as he did so. "I mean, I came out here, but there's a whole lot else in the world I've never seen before..."
But as he considered it, it would be nice to have somewhere to come back to, wouldn't it? "But a home base in the Capital wouldn't be so bad, either. When you go somewhere far away, it's always nice knowing that there's someplace waiting for you to come back." He grinned that embarrassedly crooked grin at her, eyebrows raising as he shrugged.
Her question was met with an enthusiastic nod, the boy's hair falling in his eyes as he did so. "Well. I mean, I never made it made it, but I found a teabag of it, once, and I made it for my sorta-mom. I had a little sip, and it tasted pretty good! It.." He hesitated, searching for the words. "Well, it kinda tasted like roses smell. But it would do that, wouldn't it? Haha, sorry, you must think I'm super lame..." He trailed off, blushing deeply. What was it about pretty girls making him lose track of his tongue?

Mirriam's brown eyes widened impossibly further, and a delighted smile spread over her young face. "You're gonna travel and have adventures?" she asked excitedly, bouncing a little on the branch. "Real adventures? That's so exciting! I've always wanted to travel and see a lot of places too! But His Highness says I'm too young to go anywhere fun, really, except the Capital, and that has to be with someone watching me." Her eyes darted back and forth, and she leaned closer as if to impart a secret. "But I can usually slip away from them!" She giggled slightly.
She didn't really want to think about homes to come back to, though. This was her home now, after all, but...it hadn't always been. Her other home, the one where Mommy and Daddy were, she hadn't been able to go back there for a long time. Someday she'd go look for them! When she was old enough.
She liked the subject of tea better. She listened happily while Sascha explained. She shook her head quickly. "No, no! You're not lame at all! That's really cool! I wanna try it sometime."

For a long moment, Sascha stared at Mirriam.
Then he laughed out loud, closing his extended wings around her in a tight hug, his eyes closed with delight. When he released her, he was looking thoroughly embarrassed, but still rather chipper. "I -- ah, er, sorry about that." He apologized lamely, using a wing-claw to scratch the back of his head, flushing deeply. "Just, uh. No one's ever seemed to think it was all that great. Least not so much in my family. I always thought it was weird that they were so excited to like, find places to move in and stuff like that..."
As he spoke, the full meaning of what she'd said began to dawn on him. He slowly dropped his wing, ears perked forward, broadcasting his excitement. "I don't want to get you into trouble or anything, but... Maybe someday, we can explore somewhere... together?" He sounded hopeful, the previous discussion of rose tea almost all but forgotten at this point.

Mirriam could only blink in confusion as he stared at her. Did she say something wrong? But when he started laughing, she grinned and joined right in, squeaking a little in surprise as she was pulled into a hug. But she continued giggling happily, nuzzling her little nose into his chest fur and shaking. She couldn't remember being so unabashedly happy in a long time.
Mirriam's giggles finally calmed down as he released her, and she just grinned at him, ears perked forward happily. "What are you apologizing for, silly? We're friends!" she admonished him, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. So his family was excited to settle down? Her nose wrinkled. That seemed a little silly, for sure! She agreed with Sascha. When she was old enough to be on her own, she was going to explore and see everything!
And...brown eyes widened with delight. "Oh, could we? That would be amazing! Adventures are always more fun with a friend! I'd love that, Sascha! Oh, oh, where would we go? There are so many cool Realms I've never seen!"

Friends! They were friends! Sascha could hardly believe his own ears. He had gone out, and he'd made a new friend - someone who didn't mind his spontaneous hugging, or the way he prattled on endlessly about things that didn't really matter. Someone who was sweet and funny and pretty and -- oh. She was pretty, and he was still hugging her, and suddenly that made all of his self-consciousness return. She was pretty, and he had a weird beaky-muzzle and a scraggle of chin-hair that hadn't quite grown in all the way. She was probably just being nice about not minding the hug...
He stared down at his own wing-claws, trying not to let the giddy feelings overwhelm him. Even if she was just being nice about the hugging thing, she must have meant the friend-thing. That wasn't the kind of thing people joked about. Especially since she said it again - a friend!
An excited little laugh, really more of a giggle, bubbled out of him. "Well - I mean... Anywhere" He paused, realizing that a few words had been left off the statement in his excitement. "I mean to say that we could go anywhere we wanted. I mean, we probably shouldn't go to the Golfam or Solandria or Tulgey, but... there are a ton of other places, right? The world is ours to explore!"

Aww, his giggle was so happy, it made Mirriam feel all light and happy, just by hearing it. She grinned widely at him, admiring his pretty fur a bit more, wings flapping a bit before coming to rest again at her sides. This, she decided, was a good day. Making new friends was always fun, but especially when it was someone she had so much in common with! Sascha was part Fruit Bat, he liked adventures, and his spontaneous displays of affection made Mirriam feel...well, rather like she was home. Her family had used to be so affectionate, back when she'd lived with them. And while she loved Mr. Birdy Man, he was too formal for such things normally.
She nodded eagerly. "Yeah, yeah! There are a lot of cool places! I wanna see all of them!" She giggled a bit. "Well, not all at once. But you know what I mean." She had every confidence that somehow, he did. At one point, the thought of not going to see Tulgey Wood would have distressed the little Bat. Then she'd learned it was where Jubjub birds lived, and she never wanted to see another one of those, ever! They were really the only thing that scared the fiery girl.
