Waiting around for the budget approval was a touch nerve wracking. It wasn't much. He wasn't there to design and fix the whole garden, just ot get things started. He'd also heard through the grapevine that things were a mess. He tried to make the request as inoffensive as possible. He was still determined to show Her Majesty that he wasn't as bad as she thought. Even if it wasn't for him, he didn't want a bad impression of the Court of Clubs because of him. He didn't think he could forgive himself if that happened.
He spent the time waiting for the request by doing more weeding. He only had a few days left. As soon as he got the approval, he ordered what he couldn't buy in person. If he went and bought it, it could get back to the court that much faster.
He put the idea of impressing Donnie out of his mind to get as much work done. This is what he loved. He was outside with the green, the smell and feel of dirt, and the ability to let his mind wander. His mind wandered back to Anoushka, their son, Rhi, his parents... he wondered how they were all doing.
He was pulled from his work when it was too dark to see in front of his face. He stretched and went to bed. He would feel bad tomorrow for tracking in so much dirt.
The next day came around. Things were really on a roll. He felt a little sore, but intended to use his Club ability tonight. He'd gotten it worked out so he could have lights set up overnight. He'd sent another request up to Her Majesty, this time asking if said lights would be distracting or take away from her sleep. It was still early. He hoped to hear from her by messenger rather than seeing her in person today.

Sometimes she envied Clubs their ability to go without rest and be fine for the following day, or even days. She always appreciated the night vision, but being less exhausted would be welcome in a Court full of problems. All of them were now her problems. The gardens were close to the least of them, especially with new staff already hired and a make-over underway.
She stared briefly at the message from their hairy Club ambassador and rolled her eyes. If the sounds and lights of the Villa cliffs didn't keep her awake, she doubted a little outdoor light would. Still, he was being polite, not stupid. Don't take your tired out on the young man just because he's male and normally aggravating. He's doing good work. You're just tired and bitchy. Nrr.
A polite negative reply was returned, stating that her sleep would remain undisturbed so long as he didn't go about uprooting trees in the evenings.

Hadrian stared at the unopened note for a few seconds before opening it. He was pleased to find a polite note. Of course it was polite. Why would it be any different? She was smart and better at politics. Even if she didn't mean it, she would pretend. Still, she was mostly Yarrow and Hadrian had not given her a very good first impression.
Work went into the night with little rest. It didn't bother him. He was a Club, after all. A very sturdily built Club at that. It's what he was made for.
Before it was too late, they pulled up the tree by the wall. He felt he had to apologize to it. He'd been friendly to it and had given it very good, fertile soil only a few days ago, now he was pulling it up out of the ground. He got a couple looks for talking to a plant, heard a couple whispers of needing rest. He groaned. the last thing he needed was for ti to get back to Her Majesty that he was insane, too. He explained that he had elemental magic pertaining to plants. He really hoped they believed him.

With the curtains firmly drawn against any intrusive lights and a pillow half over her head, Donnie only woke up once during the night to an odd noise. She'd peered outside and squinted in the light to see what was going on, but ultimately it was just a mass of light and shapes and greenery. Whatever. So long as Hadrian was doing his job with the poorly placed tree, it was fine. She didn't hear any screaming.
The next morning, she got an amusing report with her breakfast of the tired Club talking to the tree that the group of them had uprooted. Something about elemental magic with plants? Well, Clubs were known to have an odd connection with the earth more often than not, just like Spades could call forth water. Maybe he was talking to the plant. Or maybe he was just overstretching his Club ability. So long as the job went fine, she didn't particularly care either way. It was an amusing side note, though.
However tempting it was, she avoided the garden for the entire day. From the sound of things, they were doing some heavy work there and she didn't feel the need to get involved. She wasn't sure exactly what projects they were working on and would probably just get in the way, or antagonize their visiting assistant, or something else equally counter to getting the garden in good shape. Sigh. She wondered if they could eventually encorporate a greenhouse with Yarrow plants. Someday maybe...

Work for the day went smoothly and much was accomplished. Still he was exhausted and knew there was yet more to do the next day. The warm bath helped him to relax his muscles, but he knew he'd be very sore tomorrow.
The next day turned out to be unusually hot. Even with two layers of Solandrian fur missing from his coat, he needed a break when 3 in the afternoon rolled around. One of the court servants was kind enough to get two others to help her bring down buckets of ice water and dump them over his overheating body. He thanked them for their generosity (he could have sworn that servant was flirting with him, but his fear of the Queen kept him from investigating that look she gave) and rested in the shade with the other workers. He looked over the garden. It was getting along and he was happy with the work so far. It was nowhere near finished, but compared to where it was, there was now a direction that it seemed to be going.
[Alright, I'm going to just keep track of the days in OOC notes because going back and counting was annoying. We are now on day 6.]

Glancing out the window in the afternoon and seeing a soaking puddle of fur that had once been their borrowed help made Donnie do a doubletake. Was that drowned thing really the Solandrian? She'd been surprised to hear his barking voice still out there working as the noonday sun shone overhead, what with all that fur of his, but she figured he would stop before he got heatstroke. If he didn't, it was his own damn fault and probably a political mess in the making.
Well, whatever he needed to do to keep himself from causing an inter-Court scene. He certainly looked stupid with everything plastered to his sides and the fringe of hair drooping halfway from the weight of the water. She snorted and went back to her work.
When she had the opportunity to look more closely at the gardens later in the evening, she had to admit that the previously sad and untended space looked much more inviting. Even if parts of it vaguely resembled a war zone in the making.

The next day came and Hadrian expected to work himself to exhaustion. He wanted to leave a good impression. Besides, he could always sleep in the carriage home. He took a break in the afternoon. It was another hot day. Not as bad as yesterday, but he wondered if there would be any benefit from getting another bucket of water dumped on him.
He caught a glimpse of Her Majesty stepping outside. He very much wished to talk to her, take that one last opportunity to prove he wasn't such a dunce, but at the same time it was probably best that he just leave it alone. He'd likely just bungle it anyway. It was better for the Court relationship if he just let the work stand alone instead of trying his best to prove anything for his own personal needs.
It didn't look the greatest now, but most of the heavily lifting was out of the way. If he got what he intended to by the end of the day, all that would be left wasthe planting and designing.
[We could call it good here if you'd like. If Donnie wants to say anything to him, I would not mind at all continuing for a few more posts. <3 ]

Donnie had marked on her planner the day that the Clubs representative was scheduled to leave. It seemed like a stupid thing to forget, especially since his presence was a sign of goodwill between the Courts. Two days ago she'd put in an order with a place in the Capital that did marvelous baskets of flowers and it arrived earlier that morning. None of them were native Yarrow varieties, sadly, but she hadn't wanted to make anyone queasy. That wasn't the sort of message she meant to send.
Stepping into the garden, the Queen glanced around and evaluated the progress he'd made. It didn't look like anything amazing and she honestly knew less about gardening than many of her relatives, but she could see a method to the madness. Quite a few things had been juggled around. There were open beds of soil where she was sure plants would go, and other areas blocked off that looked as though construction would begin soon. Walkway? Structure? She wasn't sure. No doubt the plans would appear on her desk before any final decisions were made.
She approached the Solandrian and had to refrain from crossing her arms in front of her. "Well, Your Excellence, you've certainly put in a good deal of work during your stay. Spades thanks you for this, and for your assistance in finding several new garden staff. We hope that they work out better than the last set. To thank your Court for your time and effort, we have a gift for your Queen and request that you stop by our office before you leave." She wasn't sure how well she'd be able to keep up the plurals in the long run, but she may as well give them a try for something as formal as that. She eyed him and added, "Make sure you eat before you leave. It's a long ride."
((Wanna close it with this or do you want to throw in one more?))
