Anya lit up for a second but there was no way to really hide the nervousness and the concern fluttering under the smile.
She'd never been so nervous, so unsure... "Oh, well, yes... but something came up and I was hoping we could talk about it." The usually confident quetzal was flushed with embarrassment as she stepped in past Nila.
What if he turned her down? What if he didn't want children now, what if this was The End of her fairytale relationship?
Taking a deep breath Anya settled onto the couch and beckoned Zane to join her, handles folded in her lap. Oh blast it all, she must have looked like a fool! She would wait until he was seated before she spoke. "Zane, I'm pregnant." There, she'd said it. The hard part was over. "The doctor confirmed it this morning, and I... I had to come tell you."

His eyebrows perked in confusion as he watched her walk past. What did she mean? Was she going to break up with him? Had something gone horribly wrong? He shut the door lightly as he watched Nila flop on her bottom and whine.
He ignored her in favor of sitting down besides Anya. He really hoped it was nothing horrible. What would he do if she said they weren't meant to be? He had finally found someone who---
She was what?
His eyes widened as he looked at her. She explained quite clearly that there was no doubt that she was pregnant. What was he supposed to say to that? Was he happy? Was he upset? He honestly couldn't tell with the jumble of emotions that bubbled up all at once.
And then he kind of blurted out what he was thinking. He didn't realize how stupid it could have sounded until the words flew out of his mouth. And once he had spoken them he slapped his hands across his beak.
"Let's get married."
That.... was not how you were suppose to react right?

Anya froze at Zane's outburst, eyes wide as her heart hammered in her chest. Married? Her beak dropped open for a moment before snapping shut again, a flush rising over her cheeks.
"O! Well, yes, yes! Of course... Of course!"
That was the last thing she expected, she wasn't even entirely sure if that was what he was supposed to say... did that even explain if he wanted kids? Anya's thoughts were fluttering around too much to settle on anything more than what he'd just asked.
Married. That meant they'd be together forever, just them. A family. Oh suits, she'd never imagined anything more perfect.
"Oh, in all the highland hills... I thought you'd be upset with me. I can't even... I'm so happy, Zane." What would she have done if he'd rejected her? That would've been awful, beyond awful. Still blushing, flushed with excitement and nerves, Anya tossed her arms her sparrow and nuzzled herself close to him.

Zane was utterly thrilled that his stupidity hadn't messed things up. The sparrow's expression went to one of shock to that of pure joy as he wrapped his arms around the woman.
He was going to be a Daddy. And he was going to have a family! It was exciting and utterly terrifying. "I would never be upset over something like this," He said giving her a tight squeeze. He honestly did adore Anya. They had been going out for quite sometime. And clearly at some point he had been thinking about potentially popping the question at some point.
To be happy with someone, and not fool around. The idea wasn't frightening at all. It wasn't as if he had relationships on the side ever since Lani stopped coming around. He had been focused on his job, which had been a bit of a nightmare for a while there. But now... everything just seemed perfect.

As the months passed, trouble slowly started to arise.
The egg was larger than the doctor had anticipated and now he was fussing over her, telling her to be less active or to stop playing with Banders. Anya had never imagined giving up her prize champions and yet she did it anyway. She gave them back to Daddy even as he snubbed his nose at her. To give up their family's name to go be a housewife was an atrocity in her father's eyes and he made sure to remind her of that every time she tried to speak to him.
Whatever regrets she had about leaving her family behind was erased by the welcome she received from Zane's. They were a wonderfully tight-knit group and though meeting Theofilus had been a bit of a surprise, he seemed happy to accept her in the family despite their rendezvous in the past. Besides, if everything worked out the way she planned then her children would more than make up for the little losses she had made in giving daddy back her banders. She'd be the happy housewife and they could carry on the breeder name.
Everything was going smoothly, Anya thought, and even the little murmurs of worry form her doctor couldn't dampen her pleasure. She had a nursery all set up, toys for boys and girls - just in case, and even those two precious favors from Theo. Everything was perfect... until the day came to lay the eggs. Or, rather: egg. Two little heart beats had fused into one over-sized egg.
Birthing the egg tore Anya apart and by the time the doctors could stop the bleeding it was too late.
When the doctor stepped out of the room his face was grim as he delivered the news. "I'm sorry Zane... Your wife didn't make it, but the egg is doing fine. It was very healthy, but we're afraid the twins have fused into one egg. It was too much for her."

The months passed entirely too quickly. They got married, everything was happy. His parents were supportive of his marriage, and they seemed to think Anya was the right one for him. Even his brothers didn't have doubts. Everything at the courts was going smoothly. Everything was right. Until the day came to deliver the eggs.
It was his birthday. He never expected for things to go wrong. The doctors had hurried her in and he was left outside of the door, staring and waiting.
Zane was a bundle of nerves by the time the doctor walked out to speak with him. Was that blood? He opened his mouth to speak, but the doctor answered everything before he could even think of a word to speak. The King was left standing and staring at the man. He... Anya... really?
He slipped down into a seat, hunched over for a few moments. It took all of his willpower to choke back the tears as he stared down at his feet. Oh Suits. How could this have happened? She was gone. And... he was left with two children?
One of the nurses had come out of the room with the egg. Zane only looked up when he felt someone touch his shoulder. They offered to call his family, for him. They offered for him to see her. They gave him the supplies he needed to take care of the massive egg. But really... it all seemed like a nightmare.
It wasn't until Ezekiel showed up that he realized this was all really happening. He was really going to have to raise two children on his own... assuming they survived.
The months passed. The anxiety and hurt didn't seem to go anywhere. Whoever said being a mother was easy was a liar. They were the most difficult months he had ever had in his entire life. And really, he could only pray that the children would be fine.
He slipped the egg in the wide cushioned box. It was supposed to hatch soon. The doctors had said the babies were healthy and that if they were a few days late it should be fine. The sparrow crouched besides the box as he stared down at the egg, "Don't disappoint your mother and me huh?"

Zane's question was met with a gentle trembling of the egg. A gentle rocking that had been occurring sporadically throughout the day and now the rocking had grown more and more persistent. Little cracks began to appear and quickly spread over the expanse of the large egg. As the cracks grew wider and the egg crumbled away for the children within little hints of pearly white and sky blue could be seen from within. At last a large chunk came away and, with it, a small flailing wing and a tiny, delicate hand. Immediately accompanying the groping fingers came a curling pink smoke that formed, instantly, into the form of a ghostly bander. In pursuit of the bander came an adorable bundle of white and blue feathers - a beautiful blend of Highland and Kahmden with her mother's plumage and her dad's colors - and on her white breast was the brilliant red mark: jack of diamonds. With the bright pink bander cub curled around her, the little girl opened her bright blue eyes opened and immediately fixated on her daddy with a happy chirp. A natural born bipedal and a high ranking jack.

Zane was more than a little surprised when the egg had started to shake violently. A chirp escaped him as he watched with wide eyes. One of the chicks didn't seem to be having a hard time cracking the egg. He gasped when he saw the hand, the pink smoke caught him completely off guard. And things just kept becoming more an more amazing as he saw the bright red J on the girl's chest. A Jack and a Bipedal? For a moment he was completely stunned to silence as he looked at the little bird. But he didn't have time to dwell. The other bird was struggling to kick out of her side of the egg. He watched as the egg shell scattered, and another little bird peered up at him. A triple mix with bright blue eyes and bat like wings... ten of diamonds. Zane found himself staring. What was he supposed to do now? Feed them? Name them? Run around like he had no head? Where was Ez when he needed him?
