There was a slight delay, long enough for a few breaths. Marie didn't reply. And then...
"...good."
She stretched out more on the rock, hogging space and not caring. The woman's response had left a good feeling in the pit of her stomach. "He was very good at what he did. Other Queens weren't nearly as competent. I remember a little bit of his mother. She was nice and he loved her, but she wasn't as good a Queen as he was. She always acted softer and she started to fall apart in really stressful situations. She relied too much on her Kings. That was what got her killed, relying on the wrong ones. I didn't think Serafino should have relied so much on his uncle, but that wasn't the problem in the end. Maybe it was. I don't know. Bernard probably could have protected him better."
After that, she remained quiet for a long time. Memories could be painful, and those were filled with complicated emotions from her summoner that she could and would never let fade. The Courts were so intricate. Fino had been born and raised to them. He knew the ins and outs. This woman was probably still learning. She didn't even deal very much with the political side of things, did she? That was the other one with snake. And Bernard. Always Bernard. "Nosy bastard."

Mephit didn't need the weapon's approval on her thoughts of Serafino, but it was good to know that the weapon was satisfied nevertheless. It assured her she wouldn't be assaulted by the weapon further down the line were Marie to have a sudden mood swing and decide to be violent.
When Marie stretched, Mephit stretched and shifted a little to her side. Watching the weapon through shining orange eyes. She hadn't heard her talk this much in a long time, but of course this was a topic which Marie could never tire of.
"Serafino did a magnificent job." Mephit did not know Serafino's mother or much about the time during her rule, but she definitely sounded less worthy of the thrown than Serafino. Good thing she'd decided to come here when she had, but a pity that he'd died when he had. "Bernard... he's not all that bad." Mephit's muzzle twitched into a smile briefly and then faded quickly. "He's pretty resilient for such an old man." To have gone through all he had, and still be alive... Mephit was mildly impressed.
The silence between them was fine, Mephit had her thoughts and Marie obviously had hers. As was highlighted by the sudden grumbling.
"Do you enjoy politics?" Mephit couldn't help but wonder, the little axe had grown up here and she seemed to know a good deal... or she simply had a strong opinion on it.

Marie didn't deign to comment further on Bernard. She didn't really want to think about him. He had gotten to live where her Serafino hadn't, even though he was his uncle and had been supposed to protect him. What a great job he'd done. At least he'd killed the man responsible. The bird, the brother, the father responsible. Claws scraped against the rock in an attempt to dig in and she grimaced.
"No," she responded in a sulky tone. Now she'd given herself a bit of a funk. "Politics are stupid. I know a lot about them and I still think they're stupid. You can use them if you have enough power to do what you want, but so can other people, and it all gets so dumb and messy. I don't like them. I like the power that comes with them." It had been her summoner's point of view, and one that she happily shared. He had been far more willing to deal with the politics, thanks in part to his uncle's influence, his mother's expectations, and his own ambitions. Neither of them had liked them very much, though.

Mephit thinly acknowledged Marie's displeasure through a half-cracked eye, but didn't comment on it. Of course, a sore spot, but she supposed those were probably easy to find in one such as Marie. She had a lot to be sore over.
"Hmm, I agree. It has its uses, I'd say, but I prefer to stay out of it whenever possible." As a Jack, she had just enough freedom and power to get where she wanted and stay there. That was all she could really ask for. "Though, I assume it was only the power of politics that brought me here... and the prospective of working in the dungeons. It's really an unlimited source of disposable lab rats."
That was her indisputable favorite reason for being there: she was paid well to do what she loved -- experiment and torture -- without ever being questioned. ...Of course, there was also Pravus but he was another story entirely.

Stay out of it. Hah. That was why she had a title. It wasn't for the politics that she joined a political career, nooo. Marie rolled her eyes and rolled over, facing her back to the deer woman in a clear gesture of feline disdain. Such a fickle little thing.
"The dungeons are one of the best places in the castle. Some rulers have used them a lot. Some have barely touched them. You don't get a lot of peace-loving torture-is-wrong idealists who manage to work themselves into the Hearts Queenship, though, so I've never heard about them going unused before. I don't think Serafino's mother used them very often, but that was more her and less her administration. She didn't condone or condemn. Luckily, he took more of an active interest."
And she had been borne from much of his bloodlust and sadism, so of course those were the areas that she focused on when remembering him fondly.
((With everything going down as it has, do you want to bring this to an end soon or do we have a direction we want to take it? *headtilt*))

Mephit glanced over at Marie as she turned her back on her and arched a brow at the feline gesture. She said nothing but amused herself with the fickleness of felines. The doe shrugged her shoulders slightly.
"No, Hearts were never particularly known for being peace-loving." Even the most soft-spoken heart had a sadistic streak buried somewhere in there. "I imagine he did. A good thing to, you can truly fear a Queen that really gets involved with his dirty work." It was one of the many reasons Mephit had approved so fully of Serafino. Apparently Pravus had enjoyed a similar trait in him.
Slowly Mephit stretched and rose to sit at the edge of the rock. While they were on the topic Mephit figured she might as well get back to work. The rock had chased a significant amount of cold out of her joints already.
"I believe its warmed up sufficiently. I should return to the dungeons." Standing now, Mephit glanced over her shoulder. "If you're bored, you're welcome to join me. I have to deal with the paperwork but you can work disposal."
(Since I believe Marie has kicked the bucket and Mephit's working her way out, I figured we can just close this here?)
