A growl from across the table made Mikael look back up from his book, which he'd studiously went back to copying from, since he'd had to abandon the quick sketch he'd begun working on. Some people were quite impatient with those who did not pay the proper courtesies in Esterberry, and not just pertaining to libraries, either. They were... sometimes a more critical people than Highlanders in some opinion. "Hm... Not often we get new people in here." Mikael remarked quietly to the irate individual. It'd probably either piss her off more, or lighten the mood. Depended on how stuck up she was, he suspected.
Goodness knows that it had taken his own persistence and constant striving for achievement to attain any level of tolerance or even respect. Even then, he was still an outsider, never truly expected to achieve, yet sometimes pushed to the brink as if they wanted to see him crack. It all sounded as if he were being turned into a victim, didn't it? Sadly, he always made himself the victim. Perhaps a good portion of this was just his internal thoughts; his father had always told him he blamed everything on the world.

Penny jumped at the sudden voice. She hadn't been really paying attention to the people who were around her. When she was absorbed her her work she tended to ignore everyone and everything that was around.
She set her book down to look at the person who was talking to her properly.
Her expression was painfully confused. What.... was he? And what was with his wings and long fingers. The gas mask must of meant he was one of those bog dwellers? They didn't often venture out of their region from her understanding.
Fascinating.
"No kidding, but it takes all sorts to run the world," She shrugged and looked back to her book. Not much longer to go. Not much longer before she could be done with this semesters assignments. She gave a sigh as she slumped forward.
"What's your major?" she offered. In Esterberry it was nothing more than a greeting to college students.

Phaedra looked back and was momentarily distracted by the delicious-looking bar of chocolate. She considered asking for some. The moment passed. Who knew what Corvies put in that? Checkmate-chocolate.
The woman had a vaguely lecherous look on her face, though she wanted to attribute it to the chocolate; she had been told before that she could make some profoundly disturbing faces while eating candy too. She had no clue what the deuce this woman could specifically be looking for in a library, if she didn't want to be supplied with material. Even the children's stories were advanced.
"It's Phaedra. And yes," she said. "There are lovers here and there, of course, but by and large committed relationships are just a distraction at this stage in the game. I had a boyfriend who used to badger me every single day, wondering why I couldn't spend more time with him, whining about being used for sex and not feeling appreciated. I eventually just had to ignore him. You'd think an Esterberry would understand that my final exams came first."
Hmm. She probably should have stopped after "yes."
"Ah ha!" she said, opening the door and gesturing into the cosy little room. There was everything a girl needed. A desk, a comfortable chair, some serene art, and lots of places to pile books. "Here we are. This should do perfectly."

Mmmmm sugar. It was about time, too. It had been, what, two hours since her last coffee fix? How miserable. She consumed the chocolate in a manner that could be considered in no way "savoring". She licked her lips free of melted chocolate (well, for the most part) as she noticed the Sugar Glider eying her chocolate momentarily. Hmm~ Then she started talking. A lot. She shared a hell of a lot more information than Shift was expecting. Not to say it wasn't welcome information. For a bit she wondered if the uptight little Esterberry ever had her cherry popped... and here she was using lovers for sex, nixing the emotional bullshit! The chocolate bar was small and therefore did not last long in the hands of the Hummingbird. This, unfortunately, left her hands free to satisfy her whims. "Yes, it should," she commented, looking around. Everyone was too busy looking away either down at their book or distracting each other with quiet conversation. She switched into her human form, booted the other woman into the room and shut the other door behind them. Once inside, she jumped on and pinned the other woman to the floor. She was faced toward the ground, that lovely little rump trapped under her own hips. "Shh~ I'm not gonna hurt'cha, I simply have a little proposition fer ya," she whispered, a good majority of her idiot-drawl suddenly dropped. The fact of the matter was Shift had it in her to take without permission, she just didn't need her screaming "RAPE!" and force her to make a run for it before she accomplished anything. [sorry you weren't online and I wanted to get a post up. If I've gone too far in assuming, please let me know, Bee]

"Art." Mikael responded quickly, He hadn't necessarily expected her to pry herself from her studies, but he couldn't say he really minded; the disturbance had distracted him from his intense mindset and he found himself not fully prepared to return to it.
"When I go for my Master's degree, I'll be going more specifically into art restoration." Almost.. defensive? Well, perhaps it could be construed as pride, but with both Esterberry and family breathing down his neck about his life choices, it was a habit that was hard to break.
That.. intensity dissolved quickly, his mask-veiled expression only given away by a wag of his tail and a swiveling of his ears in her direction. "I'm Mikael, by the way."
Just as she found him odd, he was equally intrigued. Deer and canine made an odd, almost ambiguous mix. Absently, he wondered what she'd look like in biped form, if she even had one.

Damn. Everyone in this place had all their priorities straight except for her. It was frustrating that even an outsider would have a major and she didn't. The fur on her tail almost stood on end.
But there was no point in getting worked up over spilled milk.
Her ears flicked forward at the name. It was a pretty one to boot. He was even pretty interesting looking for an outsider. Damn it. Why did she always get the short end of the stick? Pushing down her bubbling furry she gave the man a toothy smile of good will.
"My name is Petunia. Most people call me Penny. Unfortunately I'm shamefully without a major." The mix breed shrugged. "I have to say I'm pretty jealous of someone who knows what their Master's degree is going to be when I don't even have my BA."

"Oh.. is that so?" Mikael could not keep back the surprise that crept into his voice, though he quickly cleared his throat as he realized how that must have sounded. He certainly didn't want to wound her pride. "Well, it was an easy choice for me." He offered lamely, his long fingers tracing a circle on a clear spot of the table distractedly. Oddly enough, Mikael found that he didn't fraternize much with the students of the local University. Perhaps it was because he spent so much of his time at the Court of Spades. Honestly, with all of the work he was putting in; it was honestly time for a raise of some sort. or, a promotion. His fidgeting fingers went to scratch absently at his rank. Perhaps more commitment would need to be put down than just a secretary?
"Well, the important thing is that you're getting classes under your belt; If you have the basics down then I suppose you are merely.. opening every option for yourself. Don't worry, it will come to you later on, I'm sure." A curious eye glanced over at her work, which was more like a pile of books than actual work. "Studying?"

She supposed she should have been more specific as to what, exactly, this room would be perfect for, because shortly after introducing the space, she was quite firmly shoved inside it, and was then promptly wrestled to the floor. Her mental process was not quite so eloquent at the time, however, and mostly followed a pattern of shocked and indignant noises.
Nhhh?
Nnnhhhhhh!
Murf!
Muuuuuurrrrrgh.
Most of which escaped her mouth as largely incomprehensible sounds. She hated very little in this world as much as being startled beyond proper articulation.
She swatted the air with her tail restlessly (swish swish back and forth, human bum, swish) and took a very deep breath. The woman's curious loss of idiot inflection was mildly unsettling. As was the fact that she was being sat on. She would not be unsettled. She was calm. Unruffled. Entirely unperturbed.
"Oh? And what would that be? Getting off before I have you arrested?" Her voice had a slight squeak. Treacherous larynx!

Shift wiggled her hips a little as the felt the tail swish under them, then snickered at the woman's words.
"That's not much of an incentive for me to get off then, is it?" she laughed. Then she went to further invade the woman's space by sticking her nose right underneath her ear and breathing in her scent. "Hnn~ I simply had a request for the good of the library." The woman acted like an idiot, but she knew what made people tick. She didn't know if this would be successful, but it was certainly worth a shot.
"You see, I like Esterberry, but I am fully aware of the stereotype most denizens of the region hold against my kind. It is a rather unfortunate state of affairs that I happen to be something of a imprudent individual. Not terribly good for the image of my region,"[/b] her fingers drummed impatiently on the floor, "I just get into these... crazy reckless moods. I know where they tend to lead to. It would just be awful for something in this place to risk being destroyed and further ingrain a negative prejudice in the minds of the younger generation simply because of the brash actions of a single individual, wouldn't it?
Won't you help me calm down? I would be ever so appreciative."

She shrugged. What he said was true, that is until she ran out of core classes to take. She had one more semester before she had to pick what she wanted a degree in, and what she would be doing with the rest of her life beyond being a scholar.
Petunia raised an eyebrow at his question. "Er... well. I'm actually doing a report. Unfortunately during spring break I had a little incident where I broke my jaw. I had to opt out of the verbal presentations in some of my classes so I got extra finals to do. These are demonic, really."
Next time she decided to get lost in the city she would have some way to protect herself. She had started to study self defense with a pretty experienced instructor. Hopefully she wouldn't have to put his instruction to use.
"Do you have finals this week?"
