The ferret stopped short and looked at Viola, an alarmed expression on his face. “I didn’t – please forgive me,” he spoke rapidly, nipping his lower lip with a sharp canine. “I’m not particularly fond of children…but then, I’ve never been in your situation.” Ambrose paused and pursed his lips together. “I don’t have any family myself, and as a result I’ve grown self-indulgent to my own interests,” he chuckled softly. “It’s quite beyond me to act as selflessly as you do.”

Yes, he was too greedy to be a guardian, no question about it. “That’s what we are in Corvistowne, I’m afraid.” Nothing more than erratic little monsters with tunnel vision that focused on their experiments and studies, nothing more.

He began walking again and looked up at the sky. The moon was partially obstructed by somber grey-purple clouds, making their way more difficult to see. “But they’ll grow up soon,” he added with a smile. “You won’t have to be stuck here forever.”

She found herself looking down at the ground as she listened to him speak. Of course he didn't mean any of it, but it still burned like a hot iron. She didn't want to be selfless, she wanted to follow her dreams. But she couldn't abandon the children, they would probably would be killed without her. At least Karrock would be, he looked like a monster from the story book tails. And sometimes she swore he was.

"I don't think it will get better when they grown. They're not normal. I don't think either them could make it in the real world. It's partly my fault, but mostly it's because they just look so strange." She shook her head. "But it's all right. I'm just being silly and over sensitive. Consider everything forgiven."

Happy things. She should probably think about happy things and change the subject. "But... I might like to visit Corvistowne sometime. You do make it sound interesting."

Ah, Ambrose – he was so courteous! Only he could manage to turn this pleasant walk into something so awkward. Maybe he hadn’t been socialized enough as a child.

No, actually that was an understatement. He was definitely in the dark…literally as well as figuratively. Where had that moon gone?

The ferret remained silent for a moment, the only sound their footsteps as they walked down the gradually-widening alleyway. Soon they’d get to the square and parallel to that would be Lane Street. She wouldn’t have to deal with him much longer.

Normal. That was funny. He doubted any of these children were as mutated as some of his patients and even he, though not out of the ordinary by Corvistowne standards, would never be called normal.

Ambrose smiled mournfully, relieved to escape the subject. “Come visit whenever you like, I’d be happy to give you a tour.” In reality most of the cramped apartments weren’t all that exciting, but maybe she’d find the labs intriguing. “It’s easy to get lost there, though; the streets are even more confusing than these,” he teased her good-naturedly.

Viola blushed slightly at his comment about the streets being more complicated than these. One day she would get a sense of direction, and if she didn't then maybe she should just bring someone along who knew North from South.

"T-thank you for the offer. I'll be sure to take you up on it," She said with the biggest smile she could muster. Even if it was dark, he would hopefully be able to tell by the tone of her voice that it was a fantastic offer to make, even if she couldn't take him up on it.

He had been so terribly nice, even if it had been awkward at some points. And there wasn't much the snake mix could do to repay him. She did, however, start to recognize where she was. Her eyes brightened a bit when she noticed the street sign, faintly visible in the street light. "Oh! I actually know where we are now!"
