It was brownie time. Dre had decided this suddenly, because she could tell when it was time. "Come on, Drostan," the woman announced, bouncing up from her bed and brushing out the wrinkles from her the bottom of her dress. The Ace lifted his head with a weary sort of curiousity; almost every time Dre suddenly wanted to go somewhere it meant something very bad for him. Still, he was bored with her sitting on her bed and reading, especially since she didn't even ovver him a book. Dre didn't seem to think that an Ace had the mental capability to read, though his family had also taught him how to do that a long time ago. "Heel," the falcon hybrid said and the Ace sighed and followed after his mistress out into the hallway.

The pair made a strange sight as they walked through the halls, young boy followed by pale human, but they walked with a certain purpose that said that they knew where they were going and that they most certainly belonged at their current location. " I'm not so sure you're supposed to wander around like this," the man said, raising an eyebrow and looking down at the boy. It was this fact that had caused him to leave his summoner's side in the first place, not wanting to wake her after all the work she'd done but not willing to leave her child alone in the courts. The boy in question trotted ahead, taking several steps to keep up with the lengthy strides of the man. He clearly wanted to keep ahead, masked head held high, chest puffed out proudly to display the J that stood out against the silky whiteness of his fur. In contrast, the man had no marking at all on his chest and glanced around, nervous that he'd be seen without his summoner. " You're still pretty young, you know." The boy didn't respond for a moment, only glanced back at the man and shuffled his wings slightly as he trotted down the hallways. It seemed imperitive that he pick up the pace if he was going to make it to the kitchen before all of the good treats were gone, and so he began to walk faster, trotting at the quickest pace his splayed-toes would allow him comfort. He wasn't expecting a door to open and a woman to walk out, and he stumbled to a stop, nearly crashing at her feet, peering up at her from behind his thick black mask. The man also came to a halt, golden eyes widening slightly. " E-eerr.."

It really wasn't that unusual for men to fall at her feet, but this boy seemed to be awfully literal about it. Her head tilted quickly to one side, briefly emphasizing her bird nature. "Well, hello there," she said, crouching down to meet the masked boy face-to-face. She almost absently ignored the human for now. "You'll have to excuse me for walking out into your path like that," the King of Hearts said lightly. "I didn't realize there would be a sojourner passing by my door today."
From behind her, Drostan managed to stop before he actually ran into his mistress, which was wonderful for everyone involved since he might have knocked her over into the child. He glanced quickly at the newcomers, pulling a wry face. "Oh, this is just lovely," he muttered under his breath, ears flattening. "More freaks."

The man was completely still when the pair stepped out, registering an aura of slight confusion. He had never seen this woman before, and that came as a bit of a shock. She was of a high ranking and appeared to be of noble blood - but Rhiannon had never crossed paths with her. He was at a loss as to what to say - she was gorgeous, but without his summoner at his side the man felt strangely out-of-sorts.
So he said nothing. It didn't matter that he'd said nothing, as the boy in front of him picked up where he fell short.
Golden-tipped ears flicked back from where they stood up outside of the mask. "It's okay, miss," the lad said softly, his long tail giving a hopeful swish. The red glass of his eye-coverings turned to the Ace that followed her and he paused for a moment - he'd only ever seen one other person with that marking, and that was Fluffy and she didn't speak. "We're going to the kitchen to get brownies for my mother. She's been working hard on her papers all day and she fell asleep on her nose." he giggled softly.
The man, meanwhile, continued to look rather mortified, a brief expression of offence crossing his face at the Ace's words. "Look who's talking," he muttered softly, using his irritation as an excuse to get over his sudden freeze-up.

Drostan blinked for a moment before sending his glower up towards the human. He really wasn't used to people listening to him; people tended to ignore him entirely since he was an Ace. A human. . . without a marking? His red eyes widened and he instinctively stepped a little closer to his mistress. Could this be one of the legendary Jokers? They weren't supposed to be real!
Dre brushed back a strand of deep green hair as the boy explained their mission and she gave a bright, happy smile. "Wot a wonderful thing to do! She must be quite pleased to have such a thoughtful son." The woman pushed herself back upright. "As a matter of some coincidence, Drostan and I were just about to head to the kitchens ourselves in search of some brownies. Perhaps we could accompany each other." Her golden eyes flicked suddenly to the man with the boy and her gaze turned calculating for a moment before her easy going demeanour returned. "My name is Dierdre," she informed the boy.

When the Ace hid behind his master, the man smirked slightly, straightening and brushing a strand of his honey-colored hair out of his eyes. He was starting to feel a little bit better about things. He had made the right choice by accompanying Kieran on this particular trip, even if it did pain him to be away from his summoner - he could feel that she was still snoring rather peacefully, exactly as they had left her. He grinned at the beautiful woman, looking a little coy for just a moment.
She really was quite beautiful. He was sure Rhiannon would agree.
"You are? Really?" a hint of confusion entered his voice with those words. For a long time, he'd been the only one to sneak into the kitchen at this time of day to steal treats for his siblings. This was the first time he'd tried to get something for his mother, and the first time he'd ever encountered someone else who was also headed in that direction. If he could have grinned, he would have. As it was, his voice could only take on a joyful tone, tail beginning to wag and a purr emerging from him at the same time. Huh. That was weird. "That would be so much fun, miss Dierdre! My name's Kieran, and that's Apocalypse. He's my mom's friend, he's making sure I don't get hurt or anything."
The man, Apocalypse, smiled down at boy and woman, slit-pupiled eyes trailing for just a moment on the cowering Ace before returning to the woman. Her curious and calculating gaze did not go unnoticed by him, and it intrigued him. "You can call me Pale if that's too much of a mouthful." he commented, shrugging off the fact that he really was acting only as a glorified bodyguard. "What's your friend's name?"
Kieran was impatient to go and he began to walk, hoping the adults would follow his lead. He wanted his mom's brownie to be warm when he brought it back to her, after all.

Dre's smiled softened at the boy's enthusiasm; he was awfully adorable. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Kieran," she said, dropping a swift, elaborate curtsy to the boy. The rather dramatic flair simply fit the beautiful woman, and she followed after the Jack without waiting to be certain that Apocalypse would as well. She mentally settled on 'Pale' since that choice was offered to her; she had no reason to feed this strange human's ego and no desire to do so.
A chill began to affect those in the area, as the Ace finally grew angry through his fear. Something about the human, though, just put him on edge. As always, however, Dre seemed entirely oblivious to the Ace's antics even though she was also certain of where the Tulgey Wood was at all times.
That said, she sent Pale a rather arch look as she asked, "Wot friend?"

Kieran was feeling rather oblivious to the tension that seemed to be brewing between the two adults and led the way at a rather brisk pace, head held high as he walked. When Drostan grew angry the boy slowed his pace rather abruptly, glancing around. To most, the chill would have been horrifying - but to Kieran, it reminded him of someone who he dearly missed - his Papa. When he saw no sign of the familiar feline he turned back slightly, ears flicking backwards. Where had that come from?
"Maybe you can meet my mother after we get them," he suggested in a conversational tone, trying to hide his sudden and abrupt stop. It was rather embarassing, and he didn't want to say anything for fear the feeling would stop. For all that it was strange, it was soothing to the boy. "Did you know she's a King?"
Apocalypse, meanwhile, was very much affected by Dierdre's cold refusal of his flirting and began almost at once to sulk. It was, all things considered, a relatively graceful sulk, curtained hair falling over his face, smooth mouth twisted in a slightly pathetic and unhappy line. The pout only deepened when the woman began to walk before she could appreciate it. She would be tough to please, wouldn't she? As it was, he would take whatever attention from her he could get.
"Not a friend, then." he replied rather cooly, looking at the Tulgy and quickly wiping all evidence of his pout off of his face once more, replacing it with generic indifference. She wanted to play that game? He'd play. "Your pet. Is that what he is?"

Dre was just as delighted by the boy as she was rather cold and yet indifferent to the weapon. She didn't notice Drostan's anger-- again, she never did-- and was well-used to having random chills. The doctors had said they wouldn't affect her in a bad way, however, so she tended to put them from her mind and now rarely even noticed that she would shiver.
She tilted her head in concern when Kieran paused, but he quickly started walking again so she decided he must have simply thought about the similarities in rank between herself and his absent mother. "Another King?" she asked lightly. "It would be lovely to meet her; who is your mother?"
Drostan continued to skitter near Dre's feet, head turning slightly so he could keep an eye on the strange human who also kept following them. He wished the man would go away, especially after he tried pouting at the Ace's mistress.
Dre sent another glance back at the weapon, still unaware of the truth of the man's existence. "Drostan is an Ace," she pointed out flatly. "Wot do you expect him to be?"

Kieran's ears flicked backwards so he could better listen to the woman as they walked, completely unwilling to lose his speed or turn his head to look at her, though that was more polite. His vision was, frankly, terrible - the fact that he could see at all was a small miracle, but that wasn't something Dierdre or Drostan needed to know or ever really would know. He nodded in response to her question, however, tail giving a small wag. "Mmmhmm. Her name's Rhiannon." he paused for a second, thinking. "She's Majesty Xiven's only King right now, though... Do you have a Queen yet?"
It was very much the kind of innocent question a child would ask, largely unaware of the weight that it carried. Rank still had little meaning to the child - after all, he'd spent the first five years of his life in the same one-bedroom apartment that he'd been born in. The world and all of its strange ways were still largely a mystery to him. That people came in colors and forms different from those of his parents was enough of a shock.
The man raised his eyebrows. Well. It would seem she was somehow unnerved by him, and he silently cursed himself for not putting on a scarf or anything to hide that which he was missing. He'd been lax and now he was paying for it. There wasn't time to pout, though. He needed to keep close to Kieran. "I've never met a pet who could speak before," he said lightly, keeping up the air of apathy. He had learned the Ace's name, even if not in the way he'd hoped. "Please forgive my ignorance, I suppose I'm just not all that familiar with the world." Spades in his precious court. It was just too weird.
