( Hello everyone, meet my first character. Her name is Serenity and Desolace. Why two names? Because she's really Serenity but the atmosphere of the marsh turned this would be sweet heart (yet tough as nails) into a schizophrenic case. When she refers herself as Desolace she is prone to sudden mood swings and personality changes. Some call it madness, others just think she really IS crazy! Even for a marsh dweller like herself. Anyway, she's a Five of Hearts starter character any a loyal sweet heart, all around good girl. Until her personality shifts, then she doesn't know. Still however, she tries to stay under control. Anyway, enjoy. )
One part brave, two parts fool, that would well describe thoes who tred within the Golfam Marsh.
The smell of pungent marsh water and the unforgivable scent of heavy moister tends to repel most people who approach. Who would want to come to a place as dangerous as this anyway? What with all the rumors and blaten facts of utter danger lurking about every turn, one would have to be completely brazen to willingly step foot into such a hollowed place void of civilization and social contact. It was truly a place for the forgotten, neglected, or an over zealous hero on some random quest to get lost or killed. Serenity had been known to be merciful enough to guide the lost to safety when encountered, but she never actually went out of her way to do so. When she saw someone in need, she helped them no matter who they were, but did not elect to leave her small plot of fungus ridden land in the midst of the swamp. The land itself was a small island of hallowed ground, surrounded by marsh water and bearing enigmatic stones with inscribed runes carved onto it. She was not exactly sure herself what said runes translate to if anything, but she spent her entire known life on this small island of highly sought after land. The dark and gloomy atmosphere of the swamp and added factor of madness made it difficult to find such land. Much less those that bear actual structures within. Serenity's plot of land was little known to the others within the marsh, and she called herself a self proclaimed guardian. She felt compelled to stay by it and protect it as both her territory and keeping it out of the hands of others. Who knows what these structures represent, but she'll be damned before she lets anyone find out.
And so her story begins anew on this day.
Serenity was laying upon the ledge of her island within the marsh, a single yellow and green stripped paw trailing along the water. She amused her thoughts of solitude with the absent actions of her unconscious mind. Soothed by relaxation, yet plagued with schizophrenia, she talked to herself as if there were another near by.
"Have you ever wondered why we stay here, Desolace? I don't think that we really want to be here for the rest of our lives." She spoke with child like innocence blended with the spark of a heroine's wanderlust. In truth, she was born with the heart of a knight, but over time her surroundings bathed her with a maze of emotional spirals that wind around her brain. She did not know who she was anymore, slowly loosing herself with each passing day of her lonely heart. She waited as if listening to a response from herself.
"No, I like helping people out of the swamp. I know you disagree, but it's the right thing to do." She waited a moment then blinked to herself, ears lowering back as her muzzled wryed into an almost hurt look.
"Why are you so mean to me, Desolace? I've never told anyone about you, I never hurt you. Why do you have to bring that up every time!" She stood up on her hind legs and turned, lowering her head as she pads off over to the stone upon her island. She traced a paw along the runes while speaking.
"To each their own, I know. You told me, everyone else told me too. Why help those who willingly step into their own grave? I know, don't help them, watch them suffer. I cant help it, I'm not like you. But I sure am tougher then you and the others." Smirking with canine pride. "So back off pup." With that, Desolace, at least in Serenity's mind had backed off and stopped harassing her. Ah, peace at last she murred with delight of her victory.
At some point during her conversation, Serenity's mood had shifted to something darker and more deeply emotional. Her voice lowered into a deep, more seductive, and cruel tone radiating with ice that froze over the warmth of her heart.
"You always were a disappointment of my plans. I will leave with or without you, and this circle of meaningless stones is staying behind." Despite her better judgment, who was Serenity of course. The canine moved over to the opposite side of the swamp and submerged within it's depths of the murky and dark waters. "I am Desolace now, and when trouble does not find me, then I go and find it."
She growled, snaring her head back. "Stop it! I'm just going for a walk, I'm not leaving and I'm not looking for trouble!"
What ever the case may be, the canine was heading twords the boarders of her marsh, what ever came her way would be confronted by one or the other of her personalities. Always an adventure, and always a challenge for the poor girl. What now awaits her?
The chapter unfolds as the pages turn.
