Jovan felt his heart sinking lower and lower with everything that Mephit said. Nothing... Nothing at all... All he could do was wait. Wait until insanity consumed him, until his life came crumbling down. The albino King felt a horrible wave of despair washing over him.
"Thank you again, Your Highness... I'll be on my way now, if that's all...?"
He received a casual nod from Mephit and a small smile that he couldn't quite read. "That's all." She rose as he slipped off the chair and together they exited the office. Standing in the hallway, she smiled down at him and at last Jovan saw the extent of the darkness lingering that. "Take care, Jovan." Her voice had turned to a cold hiss, not warm or concerned, just cold. Haunting.
The boy forced himself to bow his head respectfully. "Good day, your Highness."
With his head low and his tail down, Jovan hurried off down the hallway. He needed to think, needed to... fix this somehow. He couldn't just say this was the end of his life. Insanity... He couldn't live with himself if that was true!

Mephit waited patiently until Jovan had vanished down the hallway before turning and making her way into the opposite direction. Only then did the weapon's voice pierce into her smug pleasure. You're such a clever bitch. How did you know he'd believe that load of crap?
The serpentine deer laughed aloud, grinning wickedly to herself. A passing maid jumped at the sound and, upon making eye contact, she let out a nervous squeak and bolted off. Mephit rolled her eyes. "It makes too much sense, that's all. I took the obvious and stated it in a way that his young mind couldn't help but eat up. I filled in the holes and answered the unasked questions that have haunted him all his life. He may be clever, but he's too young, too inexperienced, to see through such an obvious explanation."
The weapon's laughter rolled through her head for a brief eternity and Mephit basked in the unusual creature's pleasure and amusement. With a sense of pure satisfaction she hadn't felt all day, the doe slipped back into her dungeon. After such an entertaining evening, paperwork would be a breeze.
