Thyme's eyebrows lifted in surprise. "That does seem like a pretty obscure topic," she agreed, wondering how on earth something like that could possibly be interesting to read about. "Sadly, I don't think my aunt would have any information on the subject either. I'd have thought either Selkie or Esterberry libraries would have more. Do you give yourself challenges like this often?"
"I bet I could think up a few challenges for her, if she's a fan. How much you wanna bet she can use that tail for-"
Her jaw clenched a little harder than necessary. "Mind out of your nonexistent dick, if you please. I'm trying to hold a normal conversation with someone! Just one! It's not like I get all that much practice, so just shut it!" She could feel a sulky presence in the back of her mind and resolutely shut him out. There was nothing he could possibly say that would be of worth to her right now. Nothing unless she needed to guess what kind of lay the vermin would be.

“As much as I can. It stimulates the brain. I exhausted my resources back home, I’m afraid, and I’m still one citation shy. Lake travel is somewhat beyond my means at the moment,” she concluded, vaguely. She wasn’t even sure the big silky creatures knew how to read, much less write volumes on an old custom. She had attempted to interview one person, but that had gone all sorts of wrong, because something had put the old woman in a foul mood and she had stomped away quite rudely, in Phaedra’s opinion. Collecting oral history was not among her greatest talents.
And she hated large bodies of water. She was not a nature person anyway (she appreciated it and wanted to conserve it, of course, but from a healthy distance), and when she thought of lakes all she could imagine was drowning. She was fairly confident that if she put one foot in that region she would immediately be run over by a boat. She wasn’t going to mention that, though.
“Thus!” She gestured widely. “My search is here.”

"I've never been to the Lakes myself. Not all that fond of lakes, especially being raised in the Tulgey. There aren't very many ponds, much less lakes. Small rivers and creeks are about all I'm used to, and some larger ones in the Highlands." Thyme didn't hold much store by the beach as a vacation destination, half because she'd never visited one and half because panting and sweltering with sand working its way into her fur didn't sound especially fun. Her sister had probably already visited them. If Rose had been here, she might have asked if she knew about any libraries...
But the canine probably wouldn't know. She wasn't exactly an avid reader, just an avid traveler and annoyance. The thoughts were fond.
"Also an active hottie," the voice in her head added helpfully and she tried not to grimace. Thinking of her sister in any sexual context was... revolting. It was Rose.
"Er. So. Home would be Esterberry, and you're writing a paper? Is it for personal research or a class? I've met people who attended Esterberry universities, but I've never been to the realm before."

"Oh you really should," Phaedra said, because she always liked people to stand in awe of the wonderful buildings in her home region. She always thought people could be bettered by study, and where else could one get the most beneficial of study experiences but in Esterberry? It was just common sense.
"The paper is for one of my anthropology classes," she explained. "I've spent a devil of long time working on it, and with the end so tantalizingly close...I want to begin editing, which takes several weeks, if I'm being a good scholar. Which I always am." It went without saying, but sometimes she still liked to say it. She was proud of her dedication to academia. She gave Thyme a contemplative glance. "I don't suppose you might know how to get into the more...restricted-access places of this library? If they indeed exist. The librarians here were a trifle unfriendly."

Something in the way that Phaedra put things made Thyme oddly glad that she'd never attended an Esterberry university. She enjoyed learning, thought that research was a thoroughly 'okay' necessary evil, and didn't mind documenting her finds. In shorthand. Having to write a paper about it might just drive her batty, especially if the damn thing took weeks to edit. No, she'd happily read the detailed pieces written by Esterberry scholars and focus more on the application of her own research.
"There's a chance that I could weasel my way into other areas of the library," she offered slowly, thinking. "If you can remember, what suit, rank, and realms were the librarians who gave you the brush-off?" If there was at least one Club, or even a Highlander, she could probably pull rank and politely "ask for" access to the areas in question.
She'd never thought to do that before. It kind of surprised her, now that the idea was lingering in her mind.

Phaedra tried not to let a sort of childlike excitement take hold of her at the prospect of getting to the better parts of a library and finding, finally, what she needed, and she very carefully made her posture nice and straight and kept from clapping her hands together in glee. She failed, however, to keep the delight off her face, but she supposed one’s dignity wasn’t hurt too badly by letting people know one was happy.
Oh yes, she remembered the librarians. She would remember them for a long time. Perhaps write some kind of editorial on them when she got back to Esterberry. “That would be ever so kind of you, thank you! There were, if I recall correctly”—and she did! For Phaedra had a top-notch memory honed by years of study—“an Eight of Spades from the Forest of Kahmden, a Six of Clubs from the Sorgaire Range, and a Six of Hearts from Morganberry.”

A Sorgaire Club? And only a Six? That sounded promising. Thyme smiled pleasantly in return, quite happy to be of assistance. It made her feel like the title would be good for something outside of the actual Court itself, which she hadn't gotten to test much since entering the palace.
"If you'll give me just a few minutes, I have a feeling I might be able to convince one of them to let you pass. Provided that you don't abuse their goodwill, which I highly doubt." If there was any realm she would trust on principle not to disgrace themselves in a library - for fear of their reputation, if nothing else - it was Esterberry. If Phaedra was still in school, there was no way she would risk such a thing, right? Hopefully right.
With a few manners and a casually glancing blow of her title in the conversation, she managed to convince the woman in question to allow temporary access to the more restricted sections of the library. Hopefully Selkie legends would be in more abundance there than she had a feeling they might.
