The doctor looked... almost shocked by his words, which made Joel want to cringe. That bad? But it seemed he had misinterpreted look. He soaked up the almost-praise eagerly and nodded as she elaborated on the specimen. The boy looked pleased, but he wasn't grinning.
In fact, Iso's grudging application of praise made him feel a bit off balance, as if this was a far more serious situation than he had previously thought. Even doing his best didn't seem to entirely please the doctor, so he was just going to have to do even better.
Joel was preparing to look at the slides again in anticipation of additional questions, but what Iaso finally asked caught him by surprise. "Your work is... complimentary to mine." He answered after a moment's pause, "I'm currently working on exoskeletal grafts, but the muscle underneath tends to degenerate. Besides my sister, who's no further along in her research than I am, I haven't found anyone who shares my interests. At least, no one still living." He shrugged slightly. His was a rather rare field of study, but not as specialized as some. There were scientists back in Corvistowne doing things that no one else had even imagined. In Joel's case there were at least a few previous studies and related papers out there (even if most were out of print, hard to find or woefully outdated).
"I want to learn to make the muscle under the graft strengthen to support it without additional bone structure, rather than waste away. Besides, it never hurts to learn all you can." He finished. Hopefully Dr. Price would be willing and able to help him, or at least to let him glean what he could from her much greater stores of scientific knowledge.
