Colin raised an eyebrow at the man. Stupid, was he? Man, Vessie wasn't kidding about this one. But the Cardinal was nothing if not determined. "All right, just thought I'd offer," he said amicably, putting up his wings slightly in a placating gesture.
But his response to the glass...that was just juvenile of him. Colin knew very well that the man hadn't broken that thing on purpose, and he also knew he certainly didn't want the pieces scattered on the floor. He felt himself start to get angry, but he forced it down. Come on...he's -trying- to get a rise out of you so he can justify his grumpy behavior, he told himself, and with that in mind, he smiled pleasantly at the man. "Well, if that's the case, you can break it again with no problems. I can only use that ability once a week," Colin promised. "After all, glass is so much easier to break than to repair. I can even break it again for you myself if you like, though might I suggest a less hazardous location?"
Colin was proud: years of social training had paid off and allowed him to keep a perfectly serious and friendly tone of voice throughout that entire thing, even if inwardly he wanted to roll his eyes at the sheer belligerence of the man. He wondered if it counted as making his day better if the cook didn't admit it. He moved to put the spoon he was holding in the sink, then paused. "Do you want this in the sink, Sir?"
He was about to offer to clean the wall, but he thought that might be laying it on a little thick. After all, the man seemed just as likely to be upset over him being helpful as anything else he could do.

Geoff just gave Colin a suspicious look. People didn't generally walk into his kitchens and "just offer to help." There was something else behind this, and he was pretty sure it was bright red and covered in spots. Damn ferrets, always causing him trouble.
The lynx gave Colin a disgusted look over his shoulder as he began adding various vegetables into his pot. "Don't get smart with me! You're standing in my kitchen, don'tcha know!" He grumbled about smart-mouthed youngins for several minutes and shuffled back and forth between his counters, still ignoring the now-repaired pot on his floor. As far as he was concerned, it didn't exist anymore.
Geoff paused when Colin kept talking. Did he want this in the sink? Can I help? What do you need? So many questions! Did no one think for themselves anymore? He was about to give the bird another nasty reply, then paused, a smirk forming on his face. "No. I want you to throw it at someone." He stated, then began happily chopping up onions. He wanted to help? Ha! There was his helping. Now all he had to do was hope that meddling ferret came in at the right time..

Colin had a completely serious look on his face as he politely listened to what he was saying, nodding along and looking innocent. He was good at looking innocent. Having a sibling would teach you that at a very young age. "Yes, I know. It's your kitchen." Technically, he thought to himself, it's actually the Queen's kitchen, and you're just working in it. Of course, he didn't say this, as it would have been received about as well as his 'smart' comments from moments before.
Colin was actually hovering over the sink, ready to drop the spoon in it, when he heard Geoff's reply. He turned to blink quizzically at him, expression much more mild than his internal reaction. This was starting to get really frustrating. He had half a mind to throw the spoon at the irritable Lynx, but no, that would just be stooping to his level. Or something. However, it was 'his' kitchen...perhaps he should? He didn't want to hurt anyone...well, maybe he could 'miss'.
He did have bad aim, after all. So he shrugged his shoulders, deciding it might be easiest to play along. "If that is what you wish, Sir," he said, and then turned, aiming carefully...and throwing it at a young cook that wasn't holding anything hot or breakable...but intending to miss and have it land at his feet. He was rather...shocked at the fact he'd done this, and part of him was watching, abashed by his own behavior. Maybe he was starting to lose it...?

Geoff glared at Colin again, and rolled his eyes to himself. Why did everyone feel the need to repeat everything he said? It wasn't as if he was hard of hearing or anything, Suits. People were so stupid. Weren't they in the Court of Spades? Where did all the smart people go? Ugh! He kicked at the cabinet a few times before turning to glare back at the cardinal.
He smirked and crossed his arms, then leaned back against the counter to see what Colin would do. He stared as the spoon actually went flying - and almost hit one of his east favorite peons, not that he discriminated in his annoyance, of course - then started cackling loudly and grinned over at the cardinal. "So there is some spunk in ya, huh? Who woulda guessed." He chuckled a few more times before he stuck his spoon into the pot and expertly flung a piece of celery towards the same cook - and didn't miss. The cook flipped the celery off his face as if it was a usual occurance and went about his business.
The lynx eyed Colin for another long minute before he began walking in circles, idly swinging the spoon around in his hand, which only served to splatter more sauce around. "So, what did the ferret want, anyways? Rare vegetables? Unusual spices? What ridiculous thing did she send you questing for this time?" He snorted, and whacked a cabinet door with his spoon a few times for emphasis.

Colin turned in some surprise as the cook suddenly started grinning and laughing. Well how about that. He'd apparently done the right thing, this time. He felt a smile rise to his beak, at that. The Lynx certainly looked happier now than he had before! So if this didn't count as brightening his day, nothing would, the Cardinal figure with an internal leap of triumph. Somewhere inside of him, something that had been tightly clenched this whole visit eased slightly, he felt a bit lighter. Yes, it was only half the quest...but he still felt accomplished. Maybe there would be a place here for him after all.
Colin inwardly flinched at the mess that Geoff was making, but since it wasn't his job to clean the kitchen, he tried not to let it weigh on his mind too much, simply making a mental note to never ask when it came to where his food here came from. He raised an eyebrow in amusement at the question. Apparently he'd guessed something of the nature of why Colin was here and who had sent him? "Actually...you," he replied, figuring honesty might serve him best in this situation and hoping his instinct served him well once again. "She wanted to, uh, make sure you were having a good day." He thought that Geoff may at least be amused at this, now that he seemed to be in a better mood. (Or that he'd at least better understand the intent behind some of Colin's actions that he so rudely brushed off, now).

Geoff stared at him with a mixture of disbelief and contempt, then started muttering in an accusatory tone. "Having a good day? Having a good DAY! I'm always having a good day until that stupid ferret sends bumbling questers in here to make my day bad!" He hit the spoon against the counter in emphasis with his words several times, then whipped around to face Colin.
"Right, fine then, whatever, you go can go then. I'll tell her you made my day happy and sparkly and glittery," He tilted his head and affected a horrible imitation of a woman's voice, then went back to scowling. Damn ferrets. Why was this place run by ferrets? Too many damn ferrets! Didn't wolverines eat ferrets?
He waved the spoon at Colin a few times. "Didn't cha hear me? You're done! Out with you!"

Colin managed to keep a politely neutral look on his face, even when Geoff went off at him for no reason whatsoever (really, what had he done to deserve this quest? It seemed rather mean and was certainly giving him a headache. Did he make a poor first impression on Her Highness Vessatha and she wanted him to fail?), and he merely nodded at all the ranting. So he was the cause of the cook's bad mood? He hardly found that likely, considering that all the shattering glass and angry mumbling had been going on before the Cardinal had even opened the door to the room.
Still, he figured that the cook's word was as good as any...and he could at least tell her he had made his day better...by leaving him alone. Since that was apparently what he wanted...
"Right, thank you, sir. I'll see you around, then," Colin said with forced cheer, saluting the cook before backing out the door. "Have a good day." He slumped against the wall outside with slight relief, glad to finally be away from that horribly rude and grumpy man. He could only hope that not everyone in the Court showed such an abysmal lack of manners, or much of his time here would have to be spent correcting it. At least once he was titled he'd have the authority to not take that sort of snark from underlings. Pah.
Colin took a moment to recover, reflecting on what he might have been able to do differently. Really, other than leaving while he was 'ahead', he couldn't think of much. The man had been unreasonable to the extreme, and seemed to seek out reasons to be angry at everything. Pleasant.
At least he was honest about his intentions and opinions, though, instead of being mysterious and leading someone on until...no, okay, it was definitely time to move on. No need to think about -her- anymore. Ever again. Clearing his throat past the unhelpful lump that had appeared there for no reason (probably the smoke in the kitchen) the Cardinal made his way upstairs, towards the suites, to find this maid who he dearly hoped would not be as rude as Geoff had been.

Ylsa was not particularly fond of cleaning suites, but it was money, and she needed money. Soon she was going to talk with Her Highness about possibly switching jobs, but for now, she was just going to have to suck it up and dust and sweep and make beds (some that had rather disgusting sheets, why did people have to be so gross?) and rearrange dresser tops and a whole other myriad of menial, disgusting jobs she really didn't want to do.
The rather melancholy finch sighed heavily, then realized she'd left her broom and mop in the other room. Her expression worsened, and she slipped out of her current room and headed back to the one she'd been doing down the hall. But she'd left her key in the new room.. Her eyes teared up momentarily as she traipsed back and forth, wishing she was back in her bed.

As Colin was already looking for someone who looked like they needed their day fluffed up a bit, he caught the sigh quickly in the otherwise quiet hall. He walked toward the sound, forcing himself to take it slowly. After all, it would be hard to tell if this was someone who would appreciate the fact the King was sending potential recruits to help make their day brighter, or if that would offend or annoy them. So he had to make this seem...accidental. Honestly, far easier to do with someone met in the hallways than in the kitchen, where 'just wandering' would never be a good excuse for being there.
He caught sight of the Finch, and felt his heart go out to her. She looked rather like he felt at the moment...downcast and unhappy with the way life was going. He therefore didn't have to act at all when he took a few steps toward her, a concerned look on his face. "Excuse me? Miss? Are you all right? I'm sorry to bother you...but...you just seem a bit upset by something," the Cardinal called.

She was almost to the room when a quiet voice from behind her made her jump, and she swiftly turned to face this unknown person, her feathers all in a ruffle and her expression almost.. scared. "Wh-what?" She stuttered, then immediately began smoothing her feathers down and concentrating on appearing perfectly fine. "No, no, no, no... I'm fine, I'm fine..." She mumbled under her breath, and quickly unlocked the door in front of her.
"One moment.." She said to him with a nod, then rushed inside to get the broom and mop. Safely hidden in the room, she took a few deep breaths and carefully molded her expression into one of perfect serenity, then calmly left the room, unlocking it behind her. "I'm sorry, sir, but I quite have no idea what you're talking about."
