Liadan was alerted to something happening not by a sudden sound, but rather by the sudden absence of sound. She had relegated Eulalie’s frantic pleading and flailing into objects in the living room into the background noise. Now Eulalie had stopped and the little bubble of static she had built around her popped. It was probably for the best. The Avington protagonist had just romanced some attractive but haughty Highlander woman and they seemed on the path to activities that perplexed and annoyed Liadan. Romance always spoiled a narrative.
She shut the book and rose from the little meeting cubby. She had no doubt that things would soon be getting hairy downstairs if—or rather when—her sisters were apprehended with the cake, so she decided to retire to the attic in order to avoid both confrontation and suspicion. No one ever bothered her in the attic.
Except this time, apparently.
Fifi, Myfanwy, and cake.
“Nothing is sacred,” she said on a sigh.

After having placed the cake in its new location—Liadan didn’t seem particularly pleased about the invasion, and Myfanwy resolved to make this up to her quiet sister—she went in search of the decoy-sister. Eulalie was sure to have forgotten about the goal by now, or gotten lost looking for them, or both, and it was only fair that Myfanwy made sure her sister got her fair share of the spoils after playing such an integral role.
She risked discovery by swinging through the scene of the crime once again—mommy and daddy were too busy enjoying the departure of Eulalie to notice her—and procured one final item, before continuing on to find her sister.
She found Eulalie in the west hallway, watching dust motes with delighted enrapture. She smiled fondly.
“Come on, Eulalie,” she whispered, and led her to the attic.
Myfanwy gave Liadan the piece of chocolate she’d nicked from mommy’s ‘secret’ stash—Liadan might not like strawberries, but she liked chocolate fine--and settled down next to her sisters, feeling inordinately pleased with their accomplishment.
Cake time!
