Maeve nodded slowly, her voice barely a whisper as she answered, "That would be nice."
She could only sit for a few moments before she grew too twitchy to remain still and returned to work, her thoughts a jumbled mess. Perhaps he was being genuinely kind, but--why? There had to be a motive; there was no reason to befriend the lowly little leveret with the bladed tail out of kindness. It just wasn't done.
Instead of worrying herself in a froth, which she would have done otherwise, she concentrated on scrubbing pots and pans with a fervor. The grim didn't stand a chance against her emotive scrubbing, and soon she was left with an empty sink and the return of her worries.
She stood awkwardly, waiting for direction and wondering if he'd really show her around the compound. More likely, he would give her another task, but maybe...

There was usually a good portion of time right during dinner--when everything was served, and other Leverets were stuck with attending if that was what their Jack required--in which there was little to do but perhaps fussily rearrange things in the kitchen, so Somhan took the opportunity to give Maeve a reprieve and show her around the place.
It wasn't like there were many exciting locales, but maybe it would make her feel at home if everything became a bit more familiar. Somhan thought it was a nice little Warren--but then he had never been anywhere else, either, so he didn't really have anything to hold up in comparison.
"C'mon, I'll show you the library first," he said. "My friend used to work there but not anymore. It's a great place, though, for when you have a little spare time." And if you know how to read, which some Leverets admittedly did not.

Maeve nodded slowly, and trailed after Somhan. It was--nice--of him to be showing her around; it would be good to know where everything was just in case she ever needed to fetch something, and perhaps more importantly, to keep others from taking advantage of her naivety.
She entered the library cautiously. Back at home, the Does hadn't particularly liked "smart" leverates, and they had especially not liked Maeve near the library--having time to read obviously meant she didn't have enough to occupy her time, and they were always quick to remedy that is they caught her taking a moment to herself. Still, she liked the smell of the books--it was comforting--and she had at least a very basic understanding of reading, though she wasn't very good.
"We're allowed?" Better to clarify that now, before she got herself into an awkward situation.

"Yep," said Somhan, brightly. "Though it would probably be wise not to spend a lot of time here, or come blatantly." That was just good Leveret protocol, really. When off-duty, whenever that time came, Somhan liked to be as non-intrusive as possible. An unnoticed Leveret was the safest kind of Leveret there was; getting in the way and making yourself highly visible was a road to disaster. One, you could be killed. Two, your master could think you a Doe, take a fancy to you, and then kill you once they found out you could grow into a rival rather than a mate. It was a lose-lose situation. "Master Remmington is a little more relaxed than some Jacks you might find out there."
And Somhan had heard tales of many a hardcore Jack out there. With nebulous clouds of walking discipline out there like this "Czar" he sometimes hears stories about--some obviously made-up, some probably true--he considered himself lucky to be in a Warren such as this one.

Maeve nodded, vaguely annoyed at the reminder. An invisible Leverat was the best sort. Every Leverat learned that very early on in life and adhered to it; if they didn't, they weren't around long enough to reflect on their folly. They ceased to be a non-entity, and that was the worse fate Maeve could imagine.
Still, Maeve didn't detect any malice in his statement; he was just being friendly. It was strange, after so long dealing with apathetic and hateful parties, but she couldn't let it dull her edge.
Because of her mutation, Maeve had never had an easy time blending in; her father had seemed to find it amusing enough, but others tended to view it with anything from mild curiosity to keen distrust. It was the curiosity Maeve feared the most, though she thought--hoped--that a Jack wouldn't go so far as to take such an unfit candidate as amour.
Maeve hoped to never attract that particular kind of attention, and avoid the possibility entirely. She would have to be very careful, just like always.
"Understood."

The rest of the tour went fairly quickly. There were a lot of places they weren't allowed to go, especially since they did not work in those areas. Before he knew it, it was time to return to the kitchen and start cleaning up after dinner. The Jack and his Does usually left a decent enough bunch of food and dishware to take care of. It was definitely helpful to have another pair of hands around to assist him at it.
When everything was washed, they settled in and prepared a few things for the coming day. It never, after all, hurt to be ahead of the game, especially since tardiness was never something that was well-received.
It wasn't awfully late when he finally released Maeve from her first day of work. He wanted to give her some time to really settle in before she slept.
"Good job," he said, approvingly. "I hope you like living here."
