Wendy blushed. Although she was sure he was just trying to be nice, she was glad Hatter wasn’t treating her as many other Corvies did. She was well aware that her specialty was more than a little childish; even her dad teased her for choosing something so useless to practice.
She brightened up considerably. “Ophelia? I’m sure I’ve heard that name somewhere…” Wasn’t she the serpentine deer? Yes, that seemed right; a very renowned scientist either way. Wendy nodded, “That’s what I’ve been trying, but the proportions have to be absolutely perfect,” she said with a short, embarrassed laugh. Yes, maybe she’d give the geneticist a call, anything to get her out of her rut. She missed successful experiments.
The chipmunk rushed up to catch up with him. “Still, that’s an accomplishment,” she chirped. “I mean, I make ladybugs glow purple…that’s not exactly on the same level of expertise.” She said this with complete sincerity before chuckling. “Hopefully no fire, we don’t have any tea yet to put the flames out. But um, it’s a good thing you’re getting a little rest, even if you’d really rather be working. I think if I stayed in my own lab for another minute I would’ve exploded or something,” she finished cheerfully.
Something occurred to her. “Oh, I’m sorry! You’re supposed to be taking a break and here we are, talking about work. I shouldn’t have brought it up.” Was she the one who started the conversation? It didn’t matter; she shouldn’t have gotten so involved. “I’m afraid I don’t know much else to talk about though; I don’t get out a lot.” Ugh, that sounded awful. “I mean…” She trailed off anxiously, nipping her lower lip.
