Seeing that his brother would indeed give in and tell a story, he made himself comfortable, giving his brother a happy smile.
At first he had thought that his brother was only pulling his leg but the older male soon dived into a story. He was held captivated by what he was being told. The dog sounded oddly familiar but the avian could not quite put his wing on what it was.
When he was told that everyone was screaming and running away from the sight of him, he blinked a few times as tears gathered and threatened to over flow. The poor guy, Erroll was positive that the poor dog probably had no real friends.
"What, when what?" He asked his brother flapping one of his wings in anticipation, captivated by the story he was being told. He surely hoped nothing bad had happened to the dog, the poor thing.

That dramatic effect was also to buy him some time. He clucked his serpentine tongue thoughtfully before he came up with something to keep going with. "Then one day, when the dog thought that all hope was lost, he saw... what he thought was the most gorgeous creature he'd ever seen. He had a pelt rivaling that of the most royal of court dogs, eyes that were sharp and smart... but there was just one thing wrong with him."
He cast a sideways glance at his brother to make sure he was still listening "He didn't have a tail. All the other dogs, while they ran and screamed from the ugly dog... they were mean to the one without a tail. They made fun of him because he had bad balance without one, and how he couldn't wag it to show if he was happy, or tuck it between his legs when he was happy or scared. And on that very day that the ugly dog saw him, there was a pack of rottweilers harassing him, following him down the alleyway where the ugly dog was hiding.."

Had he had lips he would have been biting them in anticipation as he waited for his brother to continue on with his story. When finally his brother continued on he released the breath that he had been holding.
The dog had manged to find something beautiful? He gave a happy chirp. He had been worried . . . He shook his head, it had been a foolish thought. Of course nothing like that would happen, this was a bedtime story after all.
"What was wrong with him?" He chirped up, breaking the rule he usually kept about not interrupting when his brother was talking. This time though he just could not help it.
A gasp escaped from his beak, one wing came up to muffle it delayed. That poor dog! Tears welled up in his eyes.
Just because it did not have a tail did not make it ugly, though! he thought to himself. If he had found the poor dog he would have hugged it better.
"What happened next Kar!" He nearly shouted, worry consuming him for the sake of the dog.

Karrock couldn't suppress his grin. "Well, he certainly couldn't let this poor dog get beat up. The ugly dog ran out, barking and snarling, baring his ugly teeth, pinning back his mangled ears. The dogs were so horrified that they all ran with their tails between their legs. The beautiful, tailless dog was very appreciative. He said to the ugly dog. 'Thank you so much for helping me, but why would you? I'm hardly a dog at all without a tail.' "
Goodness, the parallels were probably quite obvious... well, probably not. After all, he wasn't exactly rotting, and Erroll was missing something a bit more vital than a tail. At that point and time though, Karrock didn't much care how careful he was being about the story. With all the conviction he could muster in his impossibly high voice, he continued. "The ugly dog said. "Well, perhaps one day you'll find out that being without a tail is a good thing. Perhaps it has a purpose."
Karrock paused, a frown pulling the corners of his beak. He continued, more quietly. "Perhaps, if you have a purpose to be the way you are, then perhaps... There's a reason I am so ugly." Was he speaking about them, or the story? He shook himself a bit, preening his wing for a moment before fluffing Erroll's pillow. "Come on now. Time for bed."
