Mari blushed even harder. Her name was.. pretty? She'd always thought it rather awkward, even unfortunate, as she didn't particularly look anything like the flower. It was odd, but still flattering, to hear it complimented. "Oh... thank you.." She mumbled, then quickly moved on. "I can sympathize," Mari replied, "It's difficult to maneuver with my front half being webbed and my back half being hooved." She shifted her body and poked a hind leg out to "show off" her lovely anatomical gift of hooves with toes. At least Horatio's limbs were all the same.
She shrugged slightly at his question. "At the Lakes, not really. It all looks the same to me, honestly; I've been told that the landscape is quite varied if you've been there many times, but..." She paused, and shrugged again. Water was water, to her. "There's a small cove in Midori that has a nice little cabin resort we go to usually.. It's sheltered from the main beaches, so there's usually not so many tourists."

Horatio tilted his head curiously when she showed off her hooves. Well that was an interesting sort of mix. She must have had quite a hard time on dry land. Though it looked like she would still be gifted in the water. She was half Otter at least.
"That looks like it's pretty difficult to deal with. Does it make swimming difficult? I can't imagine hooves would make anything easy." He had no idea how something like that would work "properly" in the water. It would be a curious thing to watch.
"I think, even if the Lakes look mostly the same they have a different character to the surrounding area. The people there... are pretty interesting." Like Felix. Interesting was just the tip of the iceberg when it came to him. He supposed that there were others who didn't fit that stereotype of the Lakes. "Oh, do you happen to know the name of the resort?"

Mari drew the hoof back almost immediately, slightly ashamed of her equine heritage with a pure water Card in front of her. She didn't fit perfectly into either world; her sister found her too slow in the water, and her brothers found her too slow on the land. If only she could fly!
She shook her head. "Not swimming, no, other than being heavier than regular paws. Walking is actually more awkward with webbing than swimming is with hooves." Mari shrugged, looking down at her webbed paws rather than look up again. Why was she so nervous? She really needed to find some social skills.
"I would hope so. They look awfully boring to me, but I grew up here, so I suppose most places would.." She hadn't actually met many Selkies, aside from a few here in the City, and had never bothered to ask them about their home. "The name of the resort... Uh. Crystal Springs? Diamond Springs? Something along that gem-line."

Horatio didn't think less of the girl because she wasn't a pure water anything. Honestly it didn't matter to him in the long run. His mother was only part penguin and she absolutely adored the water as much as he did... even if she couldn't really indulge in it like he did. He drooped slightly at the thoughts.
No, he wasn't going to be depressed at a time like this.
"I never thought about them hindering walking on land. They look pretty sturdy, but I suppose the combination of the webbing makes it pretty difficult. I'm not a fan of walking around on dry land though," he gave a penguin shrug.
"I'll have to look that up next time I'm in the area," he commented as he slowly swam over to the side a bit, making room for the girl. "Why don't you jump in? The water is fine despite the people with no manners."

She nodded, her hooves scraping against the tile of the cement in a manner that made her wince. Her entire life the only thing she'd wished about herself was to be the same, front and back - all horse, or all otter, though she'd really prefer otter. What had possessed her mother to breed with an equine, for suits sake? "That, and the muscles needed to work the paws and hooves are entirely different, so it's harder to coordinate walking than you'd think. My brother has... had.. it worse than I do, though." She stumbled slightly over her last sentence, thinking of how much Indivar had changed lately.. but she didn't feel like being melancholy, and thinking about him made her exactly that. "I'm not either, but I don't have much choice until I decide to leave my family. I don't know where I'll go, though, so I'm stuck here with only the public pool for my sanity." Mari quipped slightly, her mouth sliding into an ironic half-grimace.
The hybrid blinked at him for a long moment, then poised herself, and executed a neat but powerful dive into the water next to him, her hooves being useful in giving her extra power into the water. She swam a neat circle underwater, then popped up a few feet away from him. "You're right, it's not bad.."

Family. It meant everything to some people and nothing to others. Horatio had family that was important to him, and family that drove him up the wall. So he could sit on either side of the fence. For now he decided to refrain from commenting.
And he was completely taken back by the wonderful display of grace. The penguin perked up as he watched her swim under the water, his eyes widening as she surfaced.
He had never met someone so graceful in the water. His heart couldn't help but skip a beat "Well, you have quite a powerful kick to your swimming there!" He said as his face lit up like a Christmas tree. "It's been a terribly long time since I've seen someone so graceful in the water!"
With that said he disappeared under the surface, swimming a circle around her and popping up in front of her, about an arm's length away. "Would you like to have a little race from one side of the pool to the other?"

Marigold let herself just absorb the feeling of the water against her too-warm skin, and the unique feeling of the water literally slicking off her half-otter fur. It was such a relief, not sitting out in the hot sun any longer.
Her face burned a red deep enough to be seen through her fur, and she self-consciously stared down at her paws treading absently through the water. What could she say to that? She wasn't the most graceful in the water, though she certainly topped her clumsy equine brothers in the water. Lilac - even their mother! - could certainly beat her any day. "Um.... thank you." She finally muttered. Why was he so complimentary?
She jumped a bit in the water when he suddenly moved, but couldn't help but smile at his challenge. "Definitely! You're on." She didn't wait for any kind of sign, but positioned her hooves on the wall of the pool and shot off, dodging around the obnoxious people in the pool.

Graceful. It was a more than proper word. He was used to people flopping around in the water. There weren't that many creatures he had met who were built for water. He had grown up in a rather sheltered place.
The race started before he realized what was happening. The penguin refrained from making a surprised squawk and dove under the water. Launching off from the side of the pool he dodged the various people in the pool. It was a narrow miss when he got to the other side of the pool. If the woman hadn't moved slightly to the side he would have hit her head on.
That was the bad thing about the water, sudden stops couldn't happen.
When he reached the other side of the pool he popped up above the water. It didn't particularly matter if he won or not, it was just nice... to actually be able to race someone with it being a challenge.

Mari maneuvered through the excess of bodies as best as she could - she rather felt akin to blood cells racing through a clogged artery - and surfaced from the water with a pop at the other end of the pool. She shook her head to clear the water from her mane, and frowned as it dripped into her face.
Now where had he gone? She looked under her and grinned, then moved aside so he wouldn't hit her as he surfaced. The mix waited for him to gain his bearings from the speedy race, then smiled. "I think I'm going to have to declare myself the winner of that one," She said teasingly. "I'll take you on for a rematch later though!" Mari didn't stop to think about what 'later' could mean - what were her chances of seeing him again, anyways? If he was smart, he would get out of the city and back into some real water.

When the penguin came up to finish the race he spotted the mix. He squirted a bit of water out of his mouth that he had managed to take in while surfacing. "You win, you win." He said waving a wing. "This is the first time in a long time I've been defeated. And yes, we'll just have to have a rematch later. Hopefully in a place that isn't filled to the brim with people."
It would have been nice to swim in real water. But that was the price he had to pay for coming to the city. Then again he still didn't have a proper job as of yet, and needed to apply to various places. Perhaps he should work in the Lakes or Midori if it was at all possible? He didn't want to be in a place that he could never have easy access to water.
