A blue porcupine waddled leisurely down the street, occasionally stopping and glancing around, as if he was looking for something. Truthfully, he only came here about once a week, but he always loved it. People, drinks, food, fun...they had it all in this city! But since he usually went to specific places, and never the sort of places he was looking for right now... He paused, scratching his head with one claw, sitting up on his hind legs and peering at the shops near him. " Well, huh. I guess this street's a bust, too," he said sadly, shaking his head. " Which is weird. I thought for sure I'd have found one by now. I thought a lot of people loved the things..." Falling back to all fours, he walked a little further, pausing by a store display to admire himself in the glass for a moment. His eyes strayed to a hat hanging in the store window. " Whoa, that's pretty far out..." He shook his head, turning away. " Nah, come on man...focus! Not what I'm here for, this time." Shooting one sad glance back at the hat (it was such a lovely shade of purple!) the porcupine continued on his way.

Yellow or blue? Josie bit her lower lip. Oh, she just didn’t know; the yellow was certainly sunny and fun to look at, but something told her that her Sorgaire Range/Josiggy Marsh friend would probably look better in ocean blue. But the yellow had orange and red accents and was just so happy. Maybe she shouldn’t get a hat at all, even if they were cute… what if she made the wrong choice and Henrietta hated it? Stop. No over thinking something so silly as a birthday present – it wasn’t allowed. Shutting her eyes tight and spinning around once, nearly knocking everything off their shelves with her klutzy wings, and touched one of her talons to the wool. Practically wiggling with excitement, Josie’s eyes sprang open again. So, blue it was! That was probably for the best; Henrietta would love it, especially because the ribbing was done in seafoam, which was her friend’s favorite color. Oh, thank goodness she had found this little shop! She had been so worried that she wasn’t going to be able to find anything, and now here she was, with this perfect gift. Grinning broadly as the lovely hat was gift wrapped, the Bat then exited the store with the parcel in a bag swung around her shoulder. That same bag knocked right into a much smaller creature with spikes. “Ah, I’m so sorry!” She said quickly, catching herself from falling even further and hitting the concrete or something equally as painful. “You wouldn’t think a hat would be so awkward to carry,” Josie added, chuckling.

Just when he had finally managed to put the hat out of his mind, the Lakelander felt something collide with him, and he stumbled only slightly, but caught his balance easily. That was the good thing about being built so stocky and low to the ground, plus walking on all fours--it lent itself to good balance. But as soon as he registered that thought, he remembered his quills, and what happened to many things unfortunate enough to run into them. He turned around to see...a...Bat? He'd never -seen- one of those before, and his golden eyes widned in awe. It took him a moment to realize she was saying something, and when he did, he grinned. "Oh, no, don't worry about it at all. I only hope you're okay! After all, I got all these natural weapons..." He looked her over, seeing no signs of injury, and let his eyes linger just a little longer than necessary on the fluffy fur of her chest, the large, sail-like wings, all in shades of lovely green and yellow like...like grass.
"A hat? You bought a hat?" His ears perked up in interest as he looked to the bag she was carrying, and then he realized it was a rather...stupid question, even by his normal standard, considering she had just come out of a hat shop. But he didn't let this deter him, instead grinning up at her excitedly, like a curious child. "Can I see it?" He liked hats, wanted one, a bit, though now that he thought about it more...wouldn't it get all tangled up in his quills and his horns?

Ouch! She had not been expecting hitting something… sharp? Wow! Why was he so prickly? That was strange – oh, and he had horns too! Her light green eyes glanced over him, taking in his skyblue and white coloring. Was he from the Selkie Lakes? Josie had never seen anything like him before, and she knew plenty of Cards from that region. Maybe today was her lucky day? She did have the hat, after all.
But it didn’t hurt all that bad, and he was being incredibly friendly about it. So different from some of the people that lived in the capital, so caught up with getting to their destination as quickly as possible that even if they ran straight into one another, they would barely notice. “Nope! I’m fine!” She replied brightly. “I just got a little startled.” Not exactly something hard to do. Experimentally, she rolled her shoulders, shaking her wings slightly. She felt fine and dandy, no injuries at all.
Huh? He wasn’t rushing away? How peculiar, but truthfully she didn’t mind. The city was fast-paced and exciting, but Josie always felt it was nice to slow down and take a breath. She nodded, “I did! It’s my friend’s birthday coming up and I figured… I mean, everyone likes hats, right?” She asked breathlessly, half pleased with herself and half looking to validate her opinion.
“Sure, sure!” She chirped, fishing around the tissue paper. The shopkeeper hadn’t done all that good a job anyway, and she was planning on rewrapping it anyway. “Here it is,” she said after a few moments, balancing it around her talons. “It’s wool.” But he probably knew that, right? So scatterbrained of her. “I had trouble deciding between this and the yellow one, but I think I made the right choice.” It was almost phrased as a question.

"Oh, well good!" the porcupine said, smiling in relief. He really didn't like it when he hurt people accidentally, and it was generally an accident. He...couldn't remember a single time he'd ever tried to hurt someone on purpose. Well, okay, there was that -one- time...but he tended not to want to think about that. After all, it was in the past, right? Water under the bridge and all that. He flicked the thought away like a lazy fly with a toss of his head, watching as the Bat-lady waved those large wings around a little. Man, but he loved wings...he wasn't really envious of them, nah, though it would be cool to fly, it also seemed like a lot of work (unless you were a Diamond, which he noticed she was also). But wings were just...innately pretty, somehow.
"Oh, yeah! Hats are great, and very useful if it gets cold or if the sun's in your eyes," he replied cheerily, settling down right on the sidewalk for a moment. He'd never gotten why the city people were always in such a hurry. The journey, he figured, was every bit as exciting as the destination. "Oooh," he said appreciatively upon seeing the purchase. "That'd make a great gift! I'm sure your friend would love it. I mean, I would!" It was almost the color of his own fur, just a few shades darker. Smiling, he put out a paw. "I'm Felix, by the way. And as it so happens, I'm looking for a gift too." A thoughtful, somewhat wistful expression went across his face.

Josie noticed the Spade examining her wings and blushed self-consciously. Her mother was a flying-fox and her father was a blue jay, so she was used to seeing wings all the time, and it was only when the Diamond ventured out to the capital that she remembered that Cards with wings weren’t all that common, especially leathery ones like hers. Honestly, she wasn’t the best flier – it was sometimes difficult for her to keep a steady direction – but she enjoyed it, particularly in good weather… but the attention made her uncomfortable.
Her nose wrinkled as she chuckled. “That’s actually the opposite of why I bought it. My friend spends a lot of her time in the Sorgaire Range, and nobody likes cold ears,” she explained excitedly, infinitely more pleased that he wasn’t speaking down to her. So many people did that, treated her like she was some sort of child, which she wasn’t.
“You think?” She asked cheerfully, and then laughed. “Well, if you like it she probably will. I mean, she’s not too hard to please but I wanted to get her something really nice,” Josie added with a nod. It looked like she had succeeded. Yay!
“Nice to meet you, Felix!” The bat exclaimed pleasantly. “I’m Josie.” She furrowed her brow, thinking about his problem. “Well… The store I bought the hat from is just over there,” she said, gesturing over her shoulder. “They had a lot of nice stuff, like scarves, gloves, and socks. Who is the gift for?” She asked curiously. “If you don’t mind me asking,” Josie added quickly, blushing again.

Felix nodded eagerly, quills bouncing a bit with the motion. "Yeah, yeah that makes sense. It doesn't get all that cold in Selkie, usually, so I can't use that as an excuse to buy a hat or ask for one." He laughed, a clear, innocent sound. And Felix was never the type to talk down to anybody, since he'd been on the receiving end of that too many times by those who (fairly accurately) percived him as being below average intelligence.
"Well, I do like it, and I think it is really nice," the porcupine affirmed, brightening as she returned his introduction. He loved making new friends. "Josie! That's a nice name. Doesn't even need a nickname, it's already short and easy to say." He looked back at the store, following her gesture, ears tilting back slightly as his face fell just slightly. "Well, I love all that kinda stuff, but the gift is for my mom and...I wanna get her something she'll really appreciate. She loves reading and...well...I'm not really much a reader myself." He shrugged, not really very ashamed of this. After all, he was who he was and liked what he liked. "So I uh...am having trouble finding a bookstore, as silly as that may sound!" He smiled sheepishly, hoping she could maybe help him in his search. She looked like a smart girl, so maybe she liked books?

Josie had never visited the Selkie Lakes… and actually, she couldn’t remember ever meeting someone from the region either, at least not off the top of her head. That was funny, but then again, she rarely left the Marsh. For the briefest moment the Diamond’s brow wrinkled with the realization that so far she hadn’t seen much of the world; she would have to change that.
But then the other Card began to laugh and she couldn’t help giggling as well, and in an instant all was well again. “That’s the same as me! It’s usually pretty warm where I live too – wet, but never cold – so I have all these knitted scarves and sweaters that I have to give away to friends that live where it’s chilly,” she explained earnestly.
“Oh, good!” She said brightly, carefully placing the hat back in its bag. That meant Hen would probably like it, right? One could hope. That was always the worst feeling, picking a gift that you thought was perfect, only to see disappointment flicker across your friend’s face. It was terrible just thinking about. “And thank you,” she added. Her mother used to tease her all the time when she was little, saying that if she had been born a boy she and her father would’ve named her Jo Jo, just because they loved the sound of the two letters so much. Fortunately for her self-esteem, she had been born a female.
The bat glanced at the street sign on the nearest corner. They were on Grove Street, which if she remembered correctly had at least two or three bookstores nearby; they were just in the opposite direction. “Well, do you know what she likes?” Josie asked. “I mean, there’s a really great little place I go to a lot, but most of it is poetry. There’s also a used bookstore, which has a lot of classics.” Those were the closest, if she remembered correctly.

"Oh! Do you knit them yourself, then?" Felix asked curiously. He was far too lazy to ever dedicate himself to learning something like that, but he still thought it was pretty cool when he met people with useful skills, like cooking or building stuff. He nodded, very much understanding what living in a wet, even temperature area was like. He'd always thought he might like to see Josiggy one day. It was right up there with Midori and the Villa on his list of 'places to see', though he'd need to get transport there because the other Realms were far off.
"Of course. Always glad to be of service," Felix replied graciously. And he was, especially if all the work it involved was him looking at a hat and giving his opinion. That was easy and fun. He glanced over as the Bat did, wondering what she was looking at, but his mouth split into a large grin as he realized that yes, Josie was going to help him. Excellent!
"Um..." He thought for a moment. "I dunno how she feels about poetry, but she reads a lot of classics, I think. She also likes new cook books and books about history, for some reason. So where's the used book store, I should probably try there first?" Felix looked at Josie, hoping that she'd offer to accompany him. After all, everything was more fun with company!
