The winner of the November contest has been decided! His Majesty was most amused by the performance and the edited script. Congratulations on saving the director's hide even though the incorrect script was used and he nearly pulled his hair out!
To acknowledge your humiliating yourself for his entertainment, he has granted the performers several Royal Favors.
Prizes
Theo: This favor is lovely, for all that it's expensive. It allows parents to increase their chance of having higher ranking children! This favor may only be used once and only while the carrier is pregnant. When used, the child with the lowest number rolled in the batch will be increased by two ranks. The original rank will be posted in the birth for the owners to see.
Kel: If you ask of a Queen, they may gift you with a token to take to a trusted friend of theirs who is learned in magic. This person will more than likely take the token in exchange for a magical item befitting the owner!
Zane: A magical favor to increase the possibility of having a mixed-Realm child by 25%. It can only be used once and has the possibility of making one of your children extra-interesting!
Ez: An odd favor, this small bit of magic will cause the owner to be the one to become pregnant should mating occur. (As anyone can get anyone pregnant in this society...it's just far more likely for women to become pregnant than men). Can only be used once.
Rogers: *thumbs up for the awesome NPC*
Winning Entry
Theofilus stared blankly at Rogers; the German Shepherd was absolutely insane. This was utterly ridiculous! Why on earth were they doing a play when there was such strife and chaos in his very life? He did not have time for this! He watched as Eilwyn waved good-bye from his perch on Clari's shoulders. The feline had come all the way from the Lakes to have fun at the activities but now she was watching Theofilus get pulled away to unwillingly perform in a play. Kelasia made no verbal protests as she was dragged by Rogers alongside the sparrow. The avian saw his employee’s posture reflect further excitement and he quickly turned his head to see what had so pleased the German Shepherd. Oh, no… it was the boys.
Theofilus mentally growled. He really did not have time or the inclination for this.
And yet here he was. About to perform a play he had no desire to act in. Somehow he had been dragged with two of his sons, and Kelasia to this nonsensical festival. He looked to Ezekiel who was cheerily going over his lines once again. He had been cast, by Rogers as the Attendant. His eyes wandered over to Zane who was simply waiting with a bored expression; somehow he had been cast as the crowd. Rogers, whose tail was wagging like a puppy dog was cast as the Lord. Theofilus was, of course, William Tell. That left Kelasia. She was cast, somehow, as the son.
The sparrow shrugged it off. Rogers was crazy: this was just further proof. When random actors pull you off the street you say ‘no’. It was a simple concept the dog didn't seem to understand. No one even seemed to mind that there was no actual child present in their group. Apparently they were going to get a kick out of this performance.
The one thing that surprised Theofilus was the little fact that Kelasia hadn't noticed that Zane and Ezekiel were his children. His surprise was curbed, however, when she looked to him with a confused expression and asked, "Is this the right script?" Evidently she was preoccupied by learning a play that didn’t follow the one she knew from all of her research.
"I don't know, it doesn't sound like it." Not that Theofilus was very concerned at this point. He could care less. "But the actor who gave it to us seemed pretty confident. He also seemed to think Rogers had fantastic casting ideas." Theofilus rolled his eyes.
Ez smirked in the background as he read his lines. He was not in his pretty pink corset, not with father around, at least, but it didn't matter. He still had a lovely set of lines that he could easily pull off. The actor that had briefly coached him was quite ecstatic over his natural inclination towards acting. He looked over at Zane who was talking to the actor that had recruited them. Zane's face went from confused to amused in less than a minute. They were obviously having a heart to heart on the finer points of the eclectic script.
"So, you need to have more emphasis in your voice!" the actor exclaimed, as though portraying the needed emotion.
"All right," Zane said waving a wing. He was the only person without a biped form in the whole group. However, Kelasia was going to be in her animal form for the performance, or so they had been informed by the crazy actor that was now coaching him. That fact made him feel a little bit better. "The force is with you!" Zane said with as much emphasis as was possible.
Rogers snorted in the background, but he continued to look over his lines. It was almost time to go on stage. The lines were easy enough, but he wanted them to be perfect. He suddenly felt someone place their arm around him. He blinked at the young man who was smiling at him. "Yes?" Rogers asked politely.
"Aren't you a lovely Lord! Have you memorized your lines yet?"
He was quite creepy in his come-on. Rogers had heard some of the other actors whispering about this one; he had to be the guy who slept around. "Yes. Yes, I am. When are we going on?"
The man looked crestfallen at the brusque brush-off, but he shrugged it off as he let go of the canine. "Almost curtain call,” he said as he sauntered away.
"I don't think I know my lines," Kelasia muttered. She was worried about the performance, about what Theofilus would think, about messing up everything because of her part. She glanced up at the actor that had given her the lines. "Uh--"
"You're fine darling! You'll do fantastically. I just have to worry about your father there."
Kelasia blinked. Right. She was the son. She didn't want to be the son, but she wasn't going to put up a fight, even if either of the two other young birds could easily fit into the role of Theofilus’ son. She looked over at Theofilus, who was reluctantly reciting his lines at the actor who seemed to be hitting on all the males in the room. She looked back to the actor who was helping her, and tried to be reassured. It would be much easier if her employer didn’t look so leery about their endeavor.
This would be an interesting play.
--
The set up was simple. Everyone was in their place. They were just waiting for the first line.
Rogers’ expression was one of complete and utter stage fright. Abruptly, he had lost all of his nerve after he had bounced around backstage. It wasn't until Ez softly poked him that he started speaking. From there, however, everything went smoothly.
"Are you sad?" Rogers recited with a smirk on his face, slipping easily back into his natural charm. His words came out poetically, despite their sarcastic nature. "Are you OK? Come have a good cry and all will be forgiven." If only those lines could be true for them.
Ez giggled, oblivious to Rogers’ own inner turmoil. A wide smirk was on his beak as he chided the German Shepherd, "My Lord, what a dirty mind you have." He was far from humble when he spoke. The actors had bothered him about that, but oh, well. He couldn’t hide what came out so naturally and the show must go on.
"He, he, he. If he misses, I'll see him crying in his bath today." The smirk on Roger's face grew wider as he struggled to keep himself from laughing at the ludicrous line.
Zane called out, hitting the desire emphasis quite well, "Tell! If you miss, I'll laugh my head off!"
Theofilus was reluctant to speak as he stood on the stage. He was about to make a fool of himself, but others were counting on him. He rolled his eyes and sighed, the bow in one hand, the fake arrow in the other. This whole undertaking was just silly. The sparrow pierced the brief and awkward silence with his line, recited clearly with as much enthusiasm he could muster. "If I miss--" He looked to Kelasia, "I'll be sorry." Suddenly, the words seemed to take on a forbidding meaning and he had to brush off the sudden drop of his stomach. At least it really was a fake arrow; he didn’t have the chance of accidentally killing the woman.
Kelasia looked up at him with wide eyes, nerves evident as she held to his gaze as a lifeline. "T-t-this is supposed to be good for m-me...! Right?"
Theofilus and Kelasia paced forward as the rest of the ‘cast’ stepped backwards a few feet. She skittered a bit as she walked to the other side of the stage. Theofilus looked down at the arrow with the suction cup on the end, he was supposed to hit the apple that was on Kelasia's head, wasn't he? The script mentioned nothing about it, but that was how the story went. He pulled back the string and fired the little arrow.
The projectile hit with a loud suction-y thump. The apple, however, remained on Kelasia's head. Apparently the little toy wasn't strong enough to cause it to fall. Kelasia sat there, completely still, waiting for the apple the drop. She blinked a few extra times as her mind raced before she tipped her head back just slightly.
The apple hit the ground with a thud. Aha, problem solved.
"Curses. Run!" Rogers exclaimed as he followed his own words off stage, tripping a bit on the unknown platform. Ez followed after him, smirk still present on his beak.
Kelasia let out a large sigh, and her lines rang true. "I-I thought I was a goner."
"Whew, that was lucky," Theofilus shook his head and wiped his brow. Thank the sky Kelasia had thought to tilt her head.
Zane was giggling as he finished the play with, "The force is with you!"
After a bit of giggling and shuffling they all returned to the stage and took their bows. Each of them happily accepted the end of the play, though for different reasons. When the curtain fell, it signaled a return to normalcy, for good or for ill.2
