Promise…that is what this place had, it was full of promise. He looked at the sky as the sun was setting in the east and he knew that this is where he needed to be to bring himself to the top. He sat on his haunches and looked at the vast landscape and thought about home. There was nothing there for him…and if she didn’t want to follow in his ventures then so be it. “Nathifa…you will be like others who do not wish to follow me in my goals.” He said out loud to the setting sun. This place was a far cry from the marsh in which he grew up but he knew that this is where the future was and here is where he needed to be in order to make his goals become a reality. High on the hill he knew that there was a village nearby but he was unsure if he should make his face known just yet or not. No…now was not the time for that he decided. He needed to keep hidden if his plans were to work… he would venture there soon enough but now he just needed to be patient and wait. The breeze caught the membrane of his wings and threatened to pull them from his body. He looked down at the rank on his chest with disgust. He knew that he was more than a six and he was going to prove that to the world, but first sleep. He spied a tree not far off that was high enough and looked comfortable enough for him to sleep in tonight. Wandering over to it and looking high into the canopy it reminded him of many nights at home…Nathifa…for how week she was he did miss her. He jumped up into the branches, settled down and waited for sleep to come.
“Sebak…” She looked at him and thought to herself that this is wrong…we shouldn’t be doing this… “What if we get caught?” She was terrified for this was more than just the little pranks that they often pulled on the others for Sebak’s amusement alone. She looked up to him and didn’t want to upset him she wanted to make him proud of her…she truly cared about him even if she thought that he did not her. He rolled his eyes and smiled charismatically at her.
“My dear Nathifa, why are you so scared? You know that I will be here…When have I not been here for you…for us?” His words lingered in his ears, so much to get this silly female to just do one little thing…what more did he have to do to insure that she was wrapped around his every beckoning call? He smiled sweetly and pulled her closed and wrapped his wings around her back. “Have I ever lead you to darkness? Don’t you want to be out in the light? Away from all of this?” He looked into her eyes and waited for her to respond as he knew that she would.
“Sebak…” She lowered her head onto his chest and sighed. Yes this was where she wanted to be…here with him…nothing more and nothing less and she would risk it all just for that. When he knew that she was melting to his whim he smirked to himself and just waited for her response…god…this was too much effort for this so that she would do as he wished, but it was going to be worth it “Sebak…will you always be with me?” He stepped back…that was not what she usually said at this point and he was flabbergasted and at a loss for words.
“What are you talking about…All of this is for you and I, I risk all of this for us Nathifa…do you not trust me?” His eyes were full of compassion and conviction which was rare to see. She looked down at the ground and away from him. She liked it here and was happy…she didn’t want to leave home but she wanted to be with him but not like this…this was wrong…this wasn’t the right way to leave.
“Sebak, why can’t we just tell them we are leaving? Why do we have to do it this way? Why do we have to lie to everyone? What about my sister? She and her mate have just had their first child and he is strong and full of promise like you Sebak...you make it seem like you never want to come back home…never see any one again.” She looked into his eyes and wondered what was going through that head of his. He returned her gaze
“I don’t…I never want to see this place again…you and I don’t belong here Nathifa and this is the only way to insure that we will never return.” She just sat there for what seemed like forever and finally stood up and looked towards the village that they called home.
“I can’t do this Sebak…not like this…” She started to walk towards home with tears in her eyes as they threatened to spill over onto her fur. Sebak growled and sneered
“Then I have made a mistake to have given you my heart and wanting to share all of this with you…you are weak and have no place by my side…” He started to turn away and stopped in mid step. “And Nathifa…if you tell any one what I plan to do I swear I will destroy all that is dear to you…” He turned and walked away as he heard her sobbing behind him.
He woke suddenly with a start at his own dreams of a not so distant past.
“Good riddance…” He thought to himself as his heart broke slowly inside his chest.
