Tears…yes tears ran down my face as I watched the white bundle screaming in the arms of the man that was leaving the house. Father said that he would have to go, that he would bring misfortune to all of us, too many bad things had happened to him and because of him all at the same time.
He, my brother, was three years younger that I and I did not quite understand what was going on that night until I got much older. He was just unlucky since birth, my sister told me, and “misfortune” seemed to follow and get worse with him as he got older. Alex’s human form did not help things at all either. I guess I was lucky that I had not been born with a low rank and also a human form as well. Even if I am, a club as far as suit goes there was worst things that could have happened, especially living with what most people told me was a superstitious father. Father could not be wrong about the things he told us right? All of the advice and stories he told me I followed and not one bad thing had happened to me not to mention that things did seem to get better once Alex was gone from our lives.
It was not until I got older that our luck would change once again as my mother fell ill. Some of our neighbors said that it was because she birthed my monster of a brother and because of this, she was tainted for life. My father could not say yes or no to this reaction from the town but he loved our mother and did everything he could to help her get better. I remember one day when he brought home a beautiful necklace of amber beads and placed it around her neck and told her that things would be better soon. He kissed her forehead and sat next to her until she fell asleep. She never woke up after that.
In the days that followed my father and sister were in a frantic panic all throughout the house. They unlocked every lock that we had and covered any and all mirrors. I also watched my father pour bourbon around the room in little drops to prevent evil spirits from coming into the house. My mother was prepared for her funeral and not one thing of black was on her, in fact, the only thing she wore was the amber necklace that my father gave her on the day she died.
Everything was very taboo when she was placed in her grave. Every one that came wore veils and I was held over the graved by my father and crossed. I was too young to fully understand what was really going on at the time as I was only seven years old. It was also after her funeral that people stopped talking bad about her. I only heard good things about her from that day on. My brother was also never mentioned as well. I remember when we came to visit her grave the following year there were flowers growing atop of her. Father said that was because she was a good person and that she was in a good place in the sky. This thought made me smile as I knew that it was not her fault that she was gone, it was because of Alex, it was his fault that she had died.
The years passed and the three of us were happy, father took over the business for my mother’s father, my granddad, because women were forbidden to run, the business and my mother had no male siblings and she was the oldest as well so the responsibility landed on my father. He gladly took the position and started grooming me to take over when I was older and he would not be able to work any more. I was thirteen at the time. When I reached the age of sixteen I was sent to work in field when abilities had shown themselves and proved to be of benefit to the company. What we did was build homes in the capital city and in various other regions. We were hardly a large business but we did bring in quite the nice coin compared to most businesses in our town. I was placed on the excavation team due to my magical abilities. The work was hard and the days were long. I did any thing from preparing grounds for new homes to digging out holes for ponds and other various things in between. Father and the foreman taught me that to do a job right the first time was the best thing for a business and this was when I developed my meticulous habits. I may have not been the fastest worker on the job site but I was by far the best. When I reached my twentieth birthday, I was to work along the foreman in preparation to work along side my father in the office.
All of my work aside I have to say that I was, for some strange reason, in the company of people who admired me. I could never quite understand why but Jenny, my sister if I failed to mention her name previously, always said that I had a very charismatic air about me. She swore up and down that what ever it was that decided suites did not take everything into consideration when mine was decided as, with this natural charm I should have been born a diamond. I always blushed at this comment as I was quite happy being the suite that I was. I remember this cute little girl once came up to me when I was on my way home from work and gave me a little pink flower. I was stunned as I graciously took the gift and smiled at her in my normal way. She just blushed giggled and ran. Of course, this was the usual treatment I got from the town. Women would give me lunch or a snack to take home or men would comment on how hard of a worker I was and how I must be making my father quite proud to be his son.
There was one girl however, Tuuli; she seemed to make a habit of always being around me. She was cute I had to admit and she always showered me with affection. I even think she went as far as to give me love potions now that I really think about it. She had a habit of giving me sandwiches that always had lettuce in them and lemon aid. The lemon aid, now it always tasted somewhat funny compared to others I had drank before. I asked my sister about this and she just giggled and asked me how I felt about her. I mean she was cute and all and I liked her company and in fact, I still do, but as far as anything else goes, she is just a friend. I never in my right mind would have thought of her as being my future bride if, during my twenty second year of age, we had not stumbled at the same time while taking a walk together. Worse part about it was that town gossip saw the whole thing and by the time, I had returned home my father was slapping me on the back and congratulating me on my engagement. I really did not care about her as my father had my mother, but if fate choose that Tuuli was to be my bride then so be it. I also was not ready to be married and against my wishes, we were subjected to a hand fasting ceremony. One year and one day after that day in mid April we were to be wed and I was not looking forward to that day.
I think that is about it really, my life has been pretty normal since then. I still don’t feel like I think I should about Tuuli especially more so now as our wedding day is fast approaching, but all of that aside my father is sending me on a business trip to the capital city to watch over the one account he had assigned to me. I was looking forward to the trip and who knows what could happen on my journey away from home.
