Iria looked out over the assembled throng of dancers, gowns upon gowns swirling by, with the occasional dancer wearing a pantsuit that was just as ornate as the dresses. Every now and then shi saw a Man, hanging off of the arm of a lady like a pretty young pet; and all of the Men that were there were pretty: exceptionally so. Then again, Iria had never seen a Man that wasn’t pretty, and part of hir wondered what they looked like, but shi put it out of hir mind, telling hirself that it didn’t matter.
The little Queen hirself was dressed just as ornately as any of the other dancers, wearing a gown of gold and pink that was altered so that, even though shi only had hir Animal form at the time. Shi had already resolved to get hir other forms as soon as was possible, but that wasn’t what she was concerned about at the moment. Hir dress had been cut so that the delicate little Q was plainly visible, and an elegant golden tiara had been placed upon hir head for all to see. Though shi lacked the refined grace of many of the adults, shi was still the belle of the ball, and everyone who saw hir couldn’t help but coo over how adorable shi was.
"Your Highness, your Majesty," spoke a Morganberry woman as she approached the pair, confident in her Human form and Ten of Hearts. She wore a dark pantsuit, offset by the flamingly brilliant color of her hair, which looked almost as if it were on fire. At her side stood a demure little mouse from the Gardens in a Bipedal form, a Nine of Spades herself, who was dressed more traditionally. The pair were as lovely as all of the couples at the party.
"Avdotya!" Iria’s mother, Isra, called, standing up and approaching the pair with a smile. She clasped the hands of the Morganberry warmly, before turning her gaze to the other Garden dweller with warmth. "And Fatin, too. I’m glad to see you visiting the Gardens!"
"Well, Fatin missed her family so much, and I felt that there was no reason for me not to come visit. Especially when Fatin has been working on me enough that I won’t get sick for a while!" The last was said with a laugh and a gentle smile at the mouse, who blushed underneath her purple fur. "Plus, it also means that I get to enjoy another of the balls that you throw here, and meet your lovely daughter! It is a pleasure to meet you indeed, your Majesty." Iria jumped a little bit, startled when the fiery gaze of the Morganberry turned hir way. Then shi recovered hir composure, and bowed hir head slightly to the other lady, smiling.
"The pleasure is all mine," shi replied, as hir mother had taught hir. Inwardly, shi was thrilled at all of the attention; then again, what little girl wouldn’t be?
"Might I have the honor of asking you for a dance, your Majesty? I’m sure that Fatin would love to spend some time catching up with Isra, so I’ll leave her be for now," Avdotya asked, bowing deeply to the kitten and offering hir an arm. Blue eyes wide with surprise and delight, Iria glanced up at hir mother for permission, and received an indulgent smile and a nod.
"Thank you for you offer, kind Lady. I believe that I shall accept," shi said demurely, putting one paw in the Morganberry’s outstretched hand.
There was a new song just starting, and the two of them, an incongruous pair, one Human and one kitten, joined the rest of the dancers. A spot was cleared for the little Queen as they danced, and Avdotya was as kind and polite as Iria had ever wanted. She was charming and witty, and Iria couldn’t help but blush and giggle at some of the things the Heart said, and they ways that she said them. The Ten was also a wonderful dancer, even taking into consideration not only their size differences, but their form differences as well. One song started that was traditionally danced in Animal form, and like a wave, various dancers all shifted to their own Animal selves. Avdotya herself transformed into a powerful wolf, her fur shifting as if she were on fire, brilliant amongst the pastel hues of the Yarrow Gardens.
Even after the dancing was over and Iria was returned to hir mother’s side, Avdotya continued to pay court upon hir, her mate secure at Isra’s side for the time being. The young Queen was terribly flattered by the attention, more than shi’d ever received at any of the previous balls. When hir nurse arrived to take hir to bed, shi did her best to prolong hir time with the Morganberry, but the nurse wouldn’t have any of it.
Before shi left, Avdotya bowed over hir paw one last time, pressing a kiss against the fur, and then raised her head to press another kiss against hir cheek, right under hir eye.
"I do hope to see you again, your Majesty. I truly enjoyed the evening with you," she said gently, and it was all that Iria could do not to wiggle with excitement.
"I always take tea at three in the afternoon," shi said instead, trying her best to remain serious. "If you wish, you may join me tomorrow." The offer was made, and the Morganberry accepted gladly, waiting until the Queen and hir nurse had left before sweeping back to her mate for the rest of the evening.
As shi was being tucked into bed, Iria couldn’t help but sigh happily to herself, giggling a bit, as she thought about Avdotya. "I wonder if, some day, she could be one of my Kings...."
With that in mind, she fell asleep, to dream of dancing across a great marble ballroom, safe and secure in fire-colored arms.
