.... Jenn made me post it. She edited it. Blame her if there are spelling errors and such.

Ez stood in front of the mirror. His face lit up as he looked at the dress he was wearing. Zane sat in the background reading like he always seemed to do. The pair often did things together, even if they were opposites. Somehow they always managed to get along, especially when Malc came around. Of all of the siblings he was the most independent, though Ceren was bolder than him most of the time.
Zane looked up from his reading to eye his brother. "You know Dad is going to flip when he sees you like that, right?"
Ez turned around to look at his brother. "Why? I think it looks pretty good on me!"
"Well, firstly you're a boy. A preteen boy. Secondly, if you had listened to Clari's warnings you may have actually heard the reason why dad avoids her on holidays."
"Wha?" the Lakeland sparrow tilted his head curiously. He really didn't listen to Clari's warnings. She gave so many of them he decided to stop listening a long time ago.
The other sparrow shook his head in dismay. Malc could have recited the story, and Ceren too -- not that she would care to. "Dad was kind of an outcast and Clari was his only friend. Well, she kind of took advantage of that and played 'dress up' games with him. Imagine, Dad our age in a bonnet and drinking tea?"
Ez snorted. "I really can't believe that happened."
"You never know with Clari. She isn't one to lie, but she does exaggerate. I don't doubt that Dad was an outcast though." He shrugged. "Just don't let him catch you in Clari's old clothing. He won't like it."
Ez looked a bit dejected. "Why not? Dad's pretty open-minded!"
"Fine. Don't let Mom catch you in those duds. She'd have a heart attack." Zane shook his head sadly as he went back to reading.
Ez had no real room to argue. His mother would never approve of such a thing. He could only imagine what she would think if he grew up to dress like this. Somehow, the thought was still tempting. He looked so much prettier in women's clothing. One day he would have a closet full of such things, even if he wouldn't wear them. The sparrow looked over at the small chest of clothing that Clari had given to him to keep. She said she would never have any use for it -- whatever that meant.
Suddenly the sparrow's eyes widened in excitement. "Look at this corset, Zane!" The younger boy reached into the chest and pulled out a pink corset covered in blue ribbons and other odds and ends. Zane raised an eyebrow at his brother's obviously excitement. No wonder he and Mori got along so well. The two were the perfect pair of relatives.
"It's very nice, but I doubt it'll fit you. Not like I can help you put it on anyway."
His brother, however, was far more determined than to allow banter to discourage him from trying on such an amazing piece of clothing. It was a good twenty-minute struggle before he managed to get the corset on. It wasn't a perfect fit, not made just for him, but it still gave him a bit of a curve.
Zane stared blankly as his brother twirled around. It was amazing picture to see his brother in a pink and blue corset. He was certain that Mom would have a heart attack and Ceren would be in utter shock. Mori would probably cheer him on or enjoy his cheerfulness to the extent that she would not notice the new addition to his wardrobe. Zane was simply amused. "It suits you," was all he could really say to his chirping brother.
"Thanks!" he said with all the enthusiasm in the world.
There was a sudden click as the door swung open. Their father was standing in front of the pair in his midform. "Mom is coming over for--" he stopped in mid-sentence as he stared down at Ez in disbelief.
"Hi, Dad," Ez said, grinning up at him. Apparently he was stunned to find his youngest son in women's clothing. Whoops.
"I'm not going to ask anything. I don't want to know. I just want you out of those clothes before your Mother and sisters get here. Understand?" Theofilus stared down at his son with a frown. His word was law in the household. Without waiting for a response, he shut the door with a soft click.
Ez looked over at Zane. He was unsure what had just happened. "Is Dad angry with me?"
"No. I just think he's surprised to find his youngest son in a mysterious pink corset."
That didn't reassure the young midform sparrow. Dad was only really short with him if he was frustrated or angry. Ez did his best to make his dad happy, but he found that he was not as good with books and things as his brother was. He was better at charming people and making people happy. Numbers escaped him, even if he did enjoy reading the story books and the tragic histories of the past. He knew he would never be able to outwit his brother or father with the use of numbers. Dad being short over something like this frightened him.
He painstakingly took the corset off and placed it in the chest, shutting it once all the clothing was folded and neatly packed away. One day, Dad would be proud of him regardless of what he wore. He would prove it by being as successful in the Courts as his sister was going to be.
Zane watched his brother's expression change from worry to determination. At least one of them had made a solid decision for the future.
