Zane yawned as he looked through the paper. Tea at a cafe could only entertain him for so long before he started nodding off. Caffeine never really helped to keep him up in the first place. He looked over the brim of his paper and started to watch all the people that scurried by. As interesting as people watching was, he usually didn't like staring at people flat out. The sparrow rolled his eyes for a moment before going back to scan the paper. There wasn't a bit of interesting news going on. The world was just amazingly slow today, wasn't it? The sparrow set the paper back down and went to drinking his lukewarm tea. It was once again his day off and he had nothing better to do but stare into space and do nothing. He really needed a hobby other than painting and talking to his brothers. What he really needed was a nightclub. He wanted to drink and socialize but no one did that during the day. Bother.

The day was a beautiful one, sun shining down through several light, airy clouds and the faintest of breezes making awnings and clothing flutter. Lani sighed, the sound directed at the City at large today. She was about sixteen now, grown out to an attractive young woman who hated just sitting around the palace and waiting for things to happen. She wasn't content with the fawning attention of her 'usuals' at Court, or the impatience of one or two 'favorites' who were beginning to grow annoyed with her flighty nature. Instead, she'd decided to spend a few days in the Capital and have a good time. Which wasn't happening right now. She made an unamused 'hmph' noise in the back of her throat and decided to go looking for lunch before she started eating her tail out of boredom. The cafe she'd been to near the center fountain on the time or two she visited the Capital before was packed, all of the inside tables full of customers and all of the outside ones occupied as well. They weren't nearly as 'full' though. She eyed the scene speculatively, not quite ready to give up on the place just because it was busy. There were a small handful of tables with only one person and she evaluated the patrons for a moment before deciding on the most attractive of the bunch. When it was a contest between an older woman, a man who was eating like a pig, or a colorful young sparrow reading a paper, the choice was clear enough. She eyed his brilliant colors for a moment before grinning and trotting up. "Hello there," she offered in greeting, gold eyes focused on his face as she hopped up into the stool across from him, settling herself and her various limbs comfortably. "I couldn't help but notice you looked bored. You're also alone, and the cafe's busy today. Mind if I join you, or do you have somebody else whose seat I just nabbed?"

Zane had to admit he was surprised with his sudden company. The sparrow set his paper down to look at the young woman properly. She was quite a pretty Highlander mix. He could hardly understand why she wanted to sit down here of all places. For a brief moment he stared at her silently in disbelief.
"Take a seat," He said with a smile, "I'm alone. Though I can't imagine why you would want to keep me company, young Lady."
He took another sip of his tea. Why in all of the stars above would someone like this ask to sit down anywhere near him. Zane supposed he was interesting to look at, but not much else. He was boring compared to all of his siblings. He looked her for another moment before waving over one of the waitresses. "Since you decided to keep me company and save my day, you can have anything you like completely on me."

Wings flaring somewhat, Lani made a face at being called a 'young Lady'. She got enough of that kind of thing at Court, people being overly polite to a young Queen whose father could rip their lives to shreds without batting an eye. It annoyed her more than anything and having someone who wasn't really that much older than her, and a cute enough young man besides, it just made her shake her head.
"Well, if you're going to be sweet enough to buy me lunch, the least you can do is call me Lani. Trust me, I'd take that and nothing over tea and 'young Lady' any day." She tossed her hair back from where it had started to slowly slide over one gold eye. She knew it got her attention when she did things like that, too. She was quite proud of her mane. "Speaking of which, I'd absolutely love a cup of tea and maybe some soup. One of the main reasons I come to this cafe is that the tea's actually good enough that my father will drink it, and the food's pretty tasty too. And the waiters can be ruffled into bringing me extra cream pretty easily."
When one of the staff came over, she ordered a cup of tea and small bowl of soup, something that smelled good from the next table over and had chunks of beef floating in it. Then she looked back to him and grinned. "Really, though, thanks for the meal. What are you up to on a day like today that I'm saving you from? Just sipping tea and reading your paper? Are you eating, or just resting?"

Zane couldn't help but smile. All right. No formalities for this one. That was a nice change of pace. "You can call me Zane. And yes, this is a rather nice place for tea. They know me pretty well here, enough that I can usually convince them to let me get away without paying for drinks. Of course, that's only when the owner isn't working."
He didn't notice the waiter scurrying off. He was too busy being mesmerized by her mane. That was quite red and quite pretty on her. Right, he shook his head slightly to get himself out of his trance. Okay. Rule number one was don't stare.
"No problem at all, Lani. All I'm really doing is being bored. It's my day off and I have nothing to do, because nothing interesting opens this early in the day." He shrugged as he took a sip of his tea. "What brings you to this part of the city, if I might ask? Or better yet, what brings you to this table? I can't be the only thing interesting here."
He really couldn't. Zane didn't think he was interesting at all. Sure he had bat wings, but that was about it.

"Zane. Alright." It was short and easy, the kind of name Lani preferred, which was why she shortened her own more often than not. She wondered if it stood for anything. "Well, it's always good to have connections in a nice place like this, especially if you get free drinks out of it. One way or the other, I suppose that's what's happening right now, so I'm in a pretty fantastic mood too."
She grinned, a hint of canines showing, but turned when the waiter arrived and placed her order on the table. Soup and tea were both fast items, the one kept hot and on-hand, the other easy enough to make and let steep on the table. Also, if she wasn't mistaken, that was a small stare at something in the vicinity of her face or hair. Her wings rustled in pleasure. Well, this wasn't looking to be boring at all.
"I'm in this part of the city because I'm bored and on a mini-vacation from home. I'm around the fountain because I'm hungry. I'm here, at this table, because my sister tells me I have interesting tastes sometimes. I like birds. I like colorful guys. And you have the cutest little spots on your shoulders." She smirked and lapped a bit at her soup. "So what exactly are you taking a day off from?"

Zane blushed at the comment, and was thankful that a blush usually didn't show through is feathers. He usually wasn't called cute, and he never got compliments for his coloration. For once Zane didn't know what to do.
"W-well I guess that makes sense, though I still can't quite understand why you would go after me--" He shook his head. Right. "I work for a shipping firm. I tally up bills and deal with customers to some degree. It's a boring job, unless a crazy eccentric walks in and ask for something weird. That doesn't happen often enough."
He took another sip of his tea. He still could feel the bush. Wonderful. Change the subject before you sound like an idiot.
"This is probably a weird question, but you seem like the type to go to clubs, have you ever been to Night Clubs around here?" He raised an eyebrow. She was underage, but that didn't stop some people. The particular club he was thinking of was strict with the minors rule. He had to wonder if she would get in.

Young, check. Sense of humor, check. Blushing, double check! Lani outright grinned at him, one strand of bright red hair curling between her eyes and over her muzzle. Maybe she could even get him to sputter into his tea a little bit. "Oh, I dunno. Most guys can't tell, but you're pretty cute, especially your colors and those splashes of maroon. I'll bet your wings look just gorgeous spread out. Wings are a bit of a 'thing' for me." She tilted her head, grin turning into a smirk.
Then she laughed. "I'm the 'keep me entertained' type, so a club would be a blast. Is that what you do for fun around here? What kind of club? How hard am I going to have to pretend?" She paused, gold eyes trained on his face. "Tell you what. If I can get in without a huge hassle, you buy me drinks. If I can't, I'll leave you alone and stop bothering you. Sound good?" Her feathered tail wagged a bit as she lowered her head to finish off more of the soup.

The sparrow didn't sputter on his tea, but he did choke on it briefly. After coughing for a minute or so he was able to regain his composure. Zane had always been bad with surprises that pertained to him. This one was definitely a surprise. "Thank you," he muttered before setting down his tea. Better not choke on it again.
A bet? Well then. Zane had never really lost a bet before, but he didn't mind if he lost this one. He was afraid that he would win this one like so many others. The club really was strict about that thing. "Just a typical night club with a bar, dancing, and general socialize that's suppose to lead somewhere but never does. So yes, if you can get into the club without a hassle then I'll buy you drinks for the entire night." Zane grinned. He wasn't going to take another sip of tea until she finished talking. That way he wouldn't choke.

Lani finished her soup and took a small lap at her tea before she sat back and considered him for a bit longer. Zane-the-sparrow was willing to buy her drinks if she could manage to get herself past the bouncer of whatever club he decided to go to. That sounded like a fun challenge. Looking at her, she could pass as anywhere from fifteen to seventeen, eighteen if you really pushed it. She just very much looked her age. Maybe the man would be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
"I was bored out of my skull before, so this looks like it'll be a lot more fun than my night would have been. Of course, it isn't really night yet and your club probably isn't open. So I guess I'll be socializing with you then and now. What are you going to do to keep me entertained in the meantime, Za~ane?" His name was said on an almost teasing note, her grin in no way diminished. She loved attention. Abso-frickin-lutely loved it.
