Fluffy sat curled up in her large, cushy cat bed, grooming her long and poofy fur into some semblance of order. Xiven had recently given her a beautiful white ribbon, which was tied daintily around one of her legs, and it made her fur both easier and more difficult to groom when she used it. The silky soft texture clung more to her tongue as she brushed it down, but it also fell in obedient waves when she managed to get it properly clean. It was almost time for her mistress to finish with her evening lessons and return to the room. The sun was mostly set and dusk had fallen, making her glad for the lamps that one of the maids had thoughtfully lit for her. She didn't mind being in the dark, but she preferred having light to see by and make sure her coat was as settled as she thought it was. When she heard a noise coming down the hallway, her twixied ears perked up and forward, listening intently. Was that her owner?

Xiven walked down the hallway, trying her hardest not to break down into tears. She felt absolutely horrible. She had done just miserably with everything that had to do with her lessons. The dirty look from the tutor, the disappointed look on her mother's face. It all just added up. Then she thought about how her father would never approve of her. She wasn't a boy. She wasn't a Highlander. Then those bastards. Raj and... his idiot sleaze of a brother. They did everything in their power to make her miserable. She just wanted to be left alone. She just wanted to do things right for once in her life. No. She just had to fail at everything. She pushed the door open, seeing Fluffy perked up. Oh thank god there was someone who could listen to her. Someone who would love her for who she was and not what she was supposed to be. She shut the door quietly behind her. "Fluffy," she choked out as she slunk towards her, tears in her eyes. "I'm so useless it hurts."

Midnight blue eyes watching eagerly for the door to open and her owner to step inside, Fluffy knew the second she saw the other feline that this was going to be one of the Bad Days. Instantly her ears flipped back and she stood, walking over to meet Xiven halfway and keeping herself lower to the ground, rubbing up against her in a full body rub when they met and starting to purr immediately. The smell of lavender and chamomile wafted after her like a small cloud.
"Mistress is wonderful," she said quietly around her purring. She could speak much more completely now than she used to be able to, but she would never be comfortable with anything besides short phrases spoken in privacy. "Bed? Talk?"
She knew what a tone like that one meant when she heard it. For whatever reason this time, her owner was upset, and it was her job to make her feel better. She just couldn't stand seeing Xiven anything less than happy without trying to do something to fix it. When Xiven was happy, she was happy. It was as simple as that.

Fluffy always made her feel better. It helped that she was incredibly soft and smelt fantastic. The compliment, however made Xiven whimper a little. She knew that Fluffy thought she was wonderful, but Xiven knew she wasn't wonderful at all. She was a failure. She couldn't do anything right.
"Bed. Talk," Xiven answered as she moved over to the bed. She flopped down with her face smothered in the sheets. She cried. Finally all the flood of built up tears came rushing out. She sobbed miserable.
"I can't do anything right! I can't make anyone happy! All I want is Mommy and Papa's approval, and I'm never going to get it! I just can't be what they want me to be! I just can't be perfect like everyone else is!" Xiven broke into another fit of sobs. She wasn't perfect like Linda, she wasn't nice like Lior, she could never be as pretty as Lani or as sweet as Viola. No matter what, she would always be less than perfect. She would always be the unwanted child.

Fluffy held back a small noise of distress at Xiven's whimper and followed her over to the bed, tucking herself in right beside her owner and starting to groom the Queen's neck. She always fluffed up when she got like this and it made her fur go in all sorts of uncomfortable directions. Besides, being groomed felt nice no matter who you were or what was upsetting you. The soft, repetitive motion and the sound of a rasping tongue, coupled with a purr, usually managed to help.
She paused to listen when the tears paused for a torrent of nearly wailed words, one paw untucking to knead comfortingly at dark fur and then another. "You make Fluffy happy," she said next to Xiven's ear, licking behind it. "And Mommy Peaches. She smiles for you. We want you." For all that the words were said quietly, they were said with conviction.
The Ace continued to groom her owner as she'd been doing to herself before Xiven arrived, still kneading a little bit with soft paws.

Xiven didn't even stand a chance against Fluffy's logic, grooming, or comforting. Her wails and sobs were dying down rather quickly as Fluffy needed against her. Damnit. The cute was just overwhelming wasn't it?
"Mer...Thank you Fluffy," Xiven muttered as she brushed her tears away. Well, there still refused to stop while she was laying down still thinking about how miserable of a person was. She was better though. Maybe she wasn't perfect but if she did make Mom smile... that was worth something wasn't it? She didn't smile for real unless she was happy, otherwise it was just a smirk. Right?
Well it didn't really matter now. She looked at Fluffy with bleary eyes. How many times had she saved her from breaking down before? If it wasn't for Fluffy... she couldn't imagine what life would be like. The little Queen was very thankful.

"Meerrrrrr," Fluffy purred as she groomed Xiven's tear-streaked cheek fur. She consciously made her paws extra silky, as she'd found the ribbon let her do, to continue her gentle kneading against the other girl's side. It, combined with the scents, would make a remarkably calming atmosphere in the room. When her owner was upset, that was the best she could try to do, and she'd never once been scolded for offering comfort.
She really couldn't do much - she was only a pet, after all, an Ace, and her entire existence was to be a good Fluffy for her mistress - but she did what she could. For Xiven, she would do anything. The Queen loved her and took care of her and made sure that she was safe. What could she offer in return but unconditional affection and loyalty?
Eventually she stopped the grooming to lower her head and rest her chin against Xiven's paws, still purring and leaning. The two of them had so much fur that when they made a pile of kitty, it left her warm and drowsy.

Xiven purred quietly, not really noticing that she even was purring. There was too much calming going on in the room for her to do anything. The soft, the happy, everything was just fantastic. She was still upset, that wasn't going to go away anytime soon.
Guh, she was such a horrible person. She didn't care though, she was her own person. Fluffy cared for her. That was enough. Right now Xiven didn't need anyone else's approval. She wouldn't need that until she was an adult. That was a long way off, right?
Before Xiven really knew it, she was nodding off. Fluffy was enough comfort for her not to constantly belittle herself. When Fluffy was around she didn't throw tantrums, or things, or cry or hate. Fluffy was someone she could talk to without worrying about being judged. Someone who cared about her no matter how stupid she was.
Fluffy approved of her. Weird how that worked.
